i never did like phone interview. It is really hard to access a person through phone. Can't see facial expression and so on. Even communicating is not as good as face to face.

Anyway, good luck. Have google in front of you in-case he ask you some technical questions. Can google quickly. smile.gif

What kind of questions do you think you'll ask?

On a side note, employers don't care if you "need" a job. They care that you "want" the job, because if you need a job, there's a very high possibility that you're just going to do bare minimum, especially if you're not familiar with the company's business. However, they could be looking for bare minimum, so you'll have to be careful to not oversell yourself and appear over qualified. Naturally, if they're hiring bare minimum means they're paying bare minimum also.

yup, i "want" this job coz i'll never know when the chance will come to me again considering my pointer is not on the par with the requirement needed, so i just want know what will they ask just to prepare myself to be don't nervous or what so ever that could ruin the interview

Ya.. I agree with abubin .. face to face iv is more easier to express something because you have your face and body language to help you especially
if you are in nervous situation like this and have a communication problem. But, dont worry, be confident and speak clearly,. good if u turn on loud speaker mode off your hp. this will make yourself more convinience when speak.

Emm,, I'm sure that if u manage to pass the phone iv, there will be a face 2 face iv awaiting u. Gud luck bro. if u mean to be there, so don't worry la..

Phone interview is one part of the hiring process. Usually what do they look for in phone interviews are your verbal communication skills and how you express yourself. One of my mate was interviewed by an o&g company and he was talking for 30mins+ on the phone, end of the day he got the internship because he was enthusiastic on the phone about the job internship + his grades are good + his relevant working experiences.
The major O&G operator/service companies received heaps of applications and phone interview is part of this tedious process. Just relax and be yourself and talk cohesively and enunciate your words.

hello guys..i just completed the phone interview n its a lil bit tricky question because i can't really hear what she ask..there's are lot of question and some of them is they ask whether we willing to relocate, list of the country that we can work outside Malaysia n also they will be ask whether we can provide ourself all the documentation to work outside Malaysia without any sponsorship from them. The interviewer also ask me if I were a team leader how can I manage my team to target the project objectives and also she ask by using facts n reason how can I recommend my self to other people. The other question is basically about yourself n she didn't ask me the common question "tell me about yourself" but I think different interviewer, different approach. I think that's all I can share with you all about the phone interview. Wish me luck n gud luck also to the others rclxms.gif

Finished mine. All good i think. I was asked to choose between fixing a broken pump on the rig or investigate about it first. then workplace environment, either good job/bad location, bad job/long hours or lot of places job/high pay. then all about myself. she said i have a good chance for the face to face interview. but im no so sure. she might menanam tebu di tepi bibir. thanks for the info all. a good thread indeed.

just curious man..what did you chose (between fixing the pump on the rig or investigate it).. the way I see it, there are no right or wrong answer.. just the reasoning part..why one would choose to do this and not that.. is it?

i think so. no right or wrong. but a minute of not producing means millions of loss. so i just say fix it first. investigate later. hope it helps.

i thought so too... Some more i think that they would have backups/standby pumps on the rig..
i knew for a fact that this is the case of operations in the power plant (i did industrial training there before).. actually you don't even have to fix the pump first or anything...
every pumps is mirrored on the other side with another pump so if ther's a problem, just switch the operation to the other standby pumps/machines (just like switching the train rail).. then after that to fix the broken stuff it's up to us la whether it requires any investigation..

I have got the reply today (after few hours interview) which i have fail the phone interview..sad...: (
seriously, the interviewer do have very strong ascent, which is very hard to get him. However, the line is tremendous clear, i had mine at 1130pm malaysia time. I would recommend taking interview at late night of malaysia time since the disturbance would minimize.
Good luck for those who havent go thru the interview.Wish you guys very best! it's very cool if can get into BakerHuges to be frank

So fast? Just few hours? I just got mine yesterday. No news so far. My interviewer, she gave generic estimation of a month. Whether or not i pass the interview. Kinda way too long though.

True, the interviewer spoke way too fast and unclear. Very difficult to follow everything but kinda just grabbed the important stuffs. Better do it at nite. Coz mine is in morning. Disconnected once. N voice often disrupted. I realised I gave some stupid answers like 10 min after the phone interview. Kinda regret it. Hope it wont affect my application. My advice is to write some usual interview answers and predict ones that likely to be out. Coz this interview is only once. No matter if you apply later for different position or in different country. My interviewer said so. So, do your best. Good luck.

Hey. I submitted my questionnaire ten days ago. On the same day, I received another e-mail saying if I hadn't submitted the form, please do so. Otherwise ignore this.
Still, until now, I haven't got any news.

@mar_ware. wow you had a good chat with your interviewer for her to reveal that stuff. i hope you will get to your next interview bro.

Its been 2 weeks from my last phone interview. still no news yet. heard that if you fail the interview, you will get instant notification like in a week. so, still finger crossed on mine. do pray yours to have a late interview result.

cheers

Added on November 20, 2009, 12:52 pm@TSOM bro. mine also like yours. they told me they havent got my answers and asked me to sent another one. however, that is for the other position (field engineer). my interview was for university engineer.

i got similar scenario. i submitted my questionnaire and after few days later (about a day before i got email about phone interview), they sent me an email like TSOM. i ignored it and just scheduled my interview anyway.

@MHKing: well not sure how good is the interview. she told me right from beginning that this phone interview thing only occurs once. no matter if you applying for different position or for another country. to be honest, that made me so freaking nervous. i never read anything about this before. either it is new policy or she just pulling my leg. either way, best if you guys prepare lots of questions and answers before scheduling the interview. thanks alot, MHKing. good luck to you too.

btw, what is the expected salary for this university engineer? any idea? and do you guys apply to other companies? can recommend some? I tried applying to major oil players like BP and Shell. No news so far... Maybe it's the economy situation.

@mar_ware No idea bro. some told that they paid in USD. i hope its true, good money for us. I applied to shell and sapuracrest, but already rejected. lol. im kinda sure that its the economy, couldnt see any other company open up the vacancy for young engineer like us. petronas also cannot harap. wish the economy could be better nx year and a good start for all of us.

p/s : tried slb, umw, tanjong offshore and scomi. still no reply. sad2~

@MHKing : regarding the one interview for all positions applied i think ive read it somewhere on their web @ email.
advice to those taking the P.I, rest assured that phone interview with BHI doesnt involve technical knowledge much.. few general question as technical q i think they were saving it for the face to face one~

salary wise : fresh grad can expect around 2.2k to 2.8k if im not mistaken... BHI pays in RM if you are working locally (labuan etc) from what ive heard

@MHKing... 2.2 2.8 range is for normal Oil and gas company... heard that BHI is paying up to RM 5.5k monthly for fresh graduate. SLB? hurm... ive received an email for a phone interview sometime July last year but still no call from them... and i couldnt check since the email is the generic one... huhu... whats worse u have to wait for another 2 year before you could apply again~ my luck i guess ::sigh::

Does anyone have an idea about the face to face interview pattern?
Is it going to be technical?
This is truly a good opportunity, because none of the other companies responded to my apps.

@TSOM : reading from this thread i believe u have to take the assessment first before proceeding to the telephone interview

@swathi : there's no guaranteed type of question during interview... more towards your luck i guess... if the panel assembled from only HR group of people then the most they gonna dig is what type of person you are and how you handle situations/scenario. if the panel of interviewer are from the technical side... then they'll dig on how well verse you are with their line of knowledge...

@TSOM: Yup. You most likely to get phone interview after you received n answered their questionnaire.

@@riff: R u employed? Or still looking? Well, if still looking, that's gonna show how bad n hard to get job in o&g services nowadays. If only the oil price keeps on going up till now...

I do hope it wont be technical questions during any interview. It can be anything but those learned from uni. It's kinda unfair to measure one's abilities from one interview. The economy is bad. It's jungle out there with lots of ppl job hunting... Wouldnt really mind low salary atm. Just need to be employed n gain experience. Of coz not just any amount would suffice.

@ mar_ware : working with UMW O&G atm... just found that this thread is interesting hence the contribution. a friend of friend got into BHI last year.

agree with ps3roxor... employers no longer see their employees as asset but only liability. to earn 6k you have to contribute at least 9k to the company (1.5x)

i dont agree with both of you. with wateve multiplication they want to achieve, they wont get it from a fresh grad. be fair and do some charity. as for the amount they want to pay for a fresh grad, im not suggesting they should pay 6k or more. i was just asking. take it easy bro.

I agree wif bro MHKing. I dun think any fresh grads expect 6k straightaway. At least not for me.

Anyone have tried going to Singapore for engineer position? Kinda want to try doing so. Tired of waiting. If not successful, do tell. Waiting is so freaking frustrating.

@ marware : ive to wait an agonizing 3 month from the date i unofficially graduate (last final exam paper) before securing a job as design engineer with one of Singapore's subsidiary company. Jumped ship 3 months later to where i am right now.

@ kanabalize : https://bakerhughes73.recruitmax.com/MAIN/

the multiplication thingy for salary i get that from someone working in HR. yes we couldnt expect much from fresh graduate but we as a fresh graduate couldnt expect much salary also from employee. Salary is kinda subjective and depends on luck, you could be contributing to a company like nobody business but might receive lesser than those who goyang kaki at workplace

so back to topic... who have already receive feedback from BHI?

welcome akimee. normally the interview would be within a week after you filled the questionnaire. but so far no further assessment after phone interview. kinda slow. been waiting for weeks now. at least baker hughes is assessing their candidates faster than other oil industries i applied. there is one i have applied for months but still in application sorting stage. no reply wadsoeva from them. not even a rejection notice. so kinda like waiting n waiting...

maybe. i applied for some o&g companies but so far, no news. possibly just putting all of us into huge pile of applicants. just in case some senior employees decide to jump ship to better jobs. lots of senior engineers went to middle east and other parts of the world for better pay. too bad for us, fresh grads, we stuck here...

not sure about ur case, akimee. normally they send phone interview confirmation after roughly a week. in my case, 4 days after that. but so far no face-to-face interview. probably i failed to impress.

"I would like to inform you that you are still being considered for this position. We are still under process of reviewing candidate information. I apologize for the delay.

Thank You,

well that's good news. at least now we know they still processing. but to be honest, it's really frustrating. my phone interview is like a month ago. so tired of waiting.

there is a face-to-face interview after this. with a possible test. from wad i read in a blog. not sure wad they will test though. most likely some technical or academic test.

i cant wait for the results already. hope it will be out soon.

off topic - maybe you can try eneos sarawak? gas operator in miri and i think i came across with internship vacancy there

from wad i been told. by the phone interviewer. she said that the phone interview works for any position at any place. n she told me that this interview is the only one no matter how many positions you r applying. so this phone interview is the only one...

i believe they did ask which country u r eligible to work. in case that u have a working visa outside malaysia. so im guessing they do it only once. get it or lose it... maybe you can apply it the next year or something. not sure it works.

anyway, anyone still getting phone interview? if yes, that may explain the delay for the next selection process.

i applied to several others. keep my options open. just frustrated with no news so far. beta know get rejected/accepted asap than waiting. at least i can strike it out from my list of potential employees... one down, 999 to go...

dunno how they do things in o&g hr these days. most of my applications r at least a month old. n they r still assessing... wrote several to ask. nothing... no rejection. no update. nothing... maybe they r having a new pastime - collecting resumes... thinking of applying to middle east or other parts of the world.

or maybe gonna apply to smaller companies as sales engineer or something. still thinking about it though.

You graduated as in what course?

Normally, it would be the simple ones. Power theories, measurements, simple maths.

From what I had with SLB back then, types of filters i.e. LPF, HPF. And simple calculations, i.e. parallel resistance and whatnot.

Maybe for LWD-MWD, you need to know a bit on the mechanical side?

Ahhh .. crap .. I'm not accepted? cry.gif Even though it was from diff email address? I am having my fingers crossed that it is not.

what standards are their answers?

the questions were :

1) which country are you authorized to work in?
2) you're on a job. it requires your full attention. your colleague is in need of help. you knew the ways to improve his work. what would you do? pros and cons?
3) offshore, onshore and office. which work place you prefer the most and the least? why?
4) same as question 1.

Wow! 2 years ago?? What did you do for the last 2 years? What were you working as? All i know about the exam is that it is technical based. N related to general engineering. R u authorised to work in Australia? Meaning do you have working visa or PR or citizenship there? If not, they will straightaway eliminate you. Baker Hughes doesnt sponsor employees as far as I know. You can apply for residence visa first then reapply again. But Australian visa is getting harder to get these days. Better luck in Canada or NZ.

Which position did you apply? I guess it really depends on the position you applied. U may or may not qualify. But just try it anyway. U still at phone interview stage? I wonder when they gonna end this phone interview and move to next stage... Is it malaysian division faster than indonesian??

BH is one of the top players in o&g services. No clue as to how the comparison goes...

If that's the case, that might be the reason why I am rejected. But then again, what about those posts in the US/UK which some of these guys are getting?

They may be from different companies, not BH. However, if you do have experience over 10 or 15 years n if the company is looking for placement urgently, it is possible for them to sponsor. As far as I know, BH doesnt offer any type of sponsor. With a few exception for important position with extremely small candidate pool under some unique circumstances n time constraint.

I suggest u to apply for working visa in Australia. Check their immi website. If I am not mistaken, you can apply for residence visa if you r working for more than 1 year in your occupation. Better if you have couple more years. But it is also depending on your occupancy, whether or not it is on job demand...

Without any visa, it is nearly impossible to get employed in overseas countries. Unless you got the skill and experience to say otherwise.

*
I am a mechanical engineer right, i also went to SLB 1st interview last December, and they sent me an email telling me that i was passed and they will invite me to the 2nd interview when the financial crisis improved, 1 year passed on that and no respond, but they sent via the email that i have math, physics and logic exams, i really want to know what is the math and physics that required for the oilfied services company entrance exam, please any sample or any help i will really appreciate, and sure i will let you know what happened exactly in my 2nd interview with baker where you can be well prepared!

Thank you and regards.

Wow! 2 years ago?? What did you do for the last 2 years? What were you working as? All i know about the exam is that it is technical based. N related to general engineering. No clue what to prepare or expect. Just read as much as you can I guess. All the best. I haven't got any email stating whether or not I am rejected... Does it mean i am rejected? Coz some ppl got rejection email. I don't...

Btw r you applying to field engineer 2009/1010? University engineer?

Either that... Or they find emailing rejection to every single ppl is tiring... After all, they did say - Only shortlisted applicants will be notified... So those not notified most likely get eliminated quietly.

Congrats to bro gabreille. Which position u applying? FE? Please keep us informed of ur progress. It may help in other job applications.

I had phone interview from BH at the end of Nov 2009. It almost been 3 months from the phone interview date and yet I still didn't know whether I'm successful or not. My friends from UTP also had the same phone interview and they get response from BH few hours after the interview that informed they were not successful. I'm tired of waiting now, and i just thinking my application rejected.

Kind regards

I emailed them yesterday and ask about my application status. I'm applying for Field Engineer position in Malaysia. The recruitment team in BH is very good where I got the reply from them in few hours later. This is what they replied to me:

Hello,
Thank you very much for your email. Unfortunately we have no new information to give out. We are still considering you for the position, and I have passed off your information to the hiring managers. They should get back to as soon as possible. We received a lot more interest in these positions then we excepted and it has taken us longer to get through the process.

I am sorry that I have no update for you, however once we do know more someone will contact you either via Phone or Email.

Thanks again for your interest in Baker Hughes!

Dear All.
GoodDay!
Hope everyone in this are doing fine. But m really happy after googling, to meet you peoples over here. I need a kind advice from all regarding my application status.
I applied for the position for Field Engineer New Grads 2009, 2010 at Baker Hughes corporate website.
At first I got a mail like, my profile corresponds to their current needs with an Attachment of Questioners for ASSESSMENT 2.
Within the next 48 hours I’ve sent it back.
I’ve done as said.
It’s now almost 1 month passed.
After sending a mail to BH Recruitment Team, got a reply like “Application still under consideration and they have passed my information to the HIRING MANAGERS. This happened around 4 weeks back.
After this message I did not receive any updates regarding my application.
Really missing a company like this in our life cycle is somewhat pathetic.

Is there any way to know the status of my applications?
Or their recruitment procedure?

From the reply you get from Baker, it is very obvious that you are still enlisted to be consider for the employment. To know your status you can either mail them or call them. But adviseable that you mail them the most once a month cause don't want to be too pushy which will make them frustate. their procedure is just like the rest. after the interview (phone), if you had pass, if not mistaken the next stage is assessment day which will be held in Singapore at their Office.

Hey guys, I just submitted my application for field engineer openings 2010 2 days ago. Received the standard "resume received" email immediately after that. Any idea how long would they take to contact me about further details? Or would it just be silence if I'm not up to their requirements?

‎Dear All,

I'm an electrical engineer. I made a telephone interview for " Field Engineer - New Graduate" Position (I have applied to vacancies in GCC countries where BHI asked for fresh graduates and entry level applicants, like UAE, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia...etc). Also I have answered assessment questions (word file) sent to me through email before telephone interview.

Recently, I received an invitation for 2 Days In-House Assessment at Baker Hughes in Dubai - UAE (24/3/2010), this is the final process in employment.

Could you please provide me with your expectations and advice regrad the questions in this event so I can prepare myself. I am very interested to join Baker Hughes.

Thanks for your help and I am looking forward for your fast reply.

2 Days In-House Assessment at Baker Hughes in Dubai - UAE (24/3/2010)

Best Regards,
Ali‎

Dear Mr. Ali,

First of all congrats for successful attend BH assessment day. As for your question I afraid we might not able to answer you as most of us still waiting for the answer whether we proceed to the next step after phone interview or not. As for me I've received the news that I had pass the phone interview and been asked to wait for the next instruction. Anyhow I wish you all the best and good luck in your assessment day at BH.

so it takes roughly 3 months after the phone interview to get a go ahead to round 2. Anyone know how many steps involved before they hire you? and also explain how each step was like please!!

if you think logically, if you were the candidate they looking for, they would've hire you immediately after the actual interview (yourself and head of dept). therefore, you should perform or at least do your homework before you even go for the 1st interview.

the actual process only come in if you are the normal candidate after they do all candies screening.

but fyi, the process from phone to f2f take quite sometimes as all GCC forummer suggested.

if you desperately wanted to know the actual process, i suggest you to do some search/googling and you will find your answer you wanted.

cheers

Phone interview just asking some questions u have answered in the questionnaire. Perhaps just to double check, confirming the answers. Not technical question. Mine at least no technical questions at all.

Thanks a lot bro for such a long explanation rclxms.gif ...tat really giv me a clear picture and answer a lot of my doubts... biggrin.gif ..

yeah, inititally i was afraid thy gonna ask me tech. question, luckily its jz normal interview question gettin 2 noe u more...bt seems tat all of you hav been thru the questionaire..as for me i nvr did the questionaire b4, i just apply n the next step is phone interview...find kinda weird...anyway i apply for the university engineer position...act wat does tis position n the field engineer differs??...nt vy sure... hmm.gif..ya my interview was short too n got interrupted a few times, really cuak...hav to ask the interviewer repeat a few times,haiz...really really hope i can pass to the next round...guess gonna wait vy long too... smile.gif

For the next assestment, hw is it like, should much tougher rite...f2f interview on technical question??..i read some forumers say that hav written exam/ IQ test oso, is it true??...n wher was ur assestment held??... so tis assestment suppose to be the last round n if u pass tis means u get the job??...sorry ya asking a lot... biggrin.gif

i read in ur past comments, u applied for field engineer. now u saying u applied for university engineer. did u apply for both? well, whichever u choose, u most likely end up as candidates for entry-level field engineer. not sure y u get to skip questionnaire part. one possible reason could be that the date for the assessment event was drawing near. so they decided to call u up n skipped that part. the next assessment is, no doubt, tougher. so be prepared. every candidate gets different questions n the questions vary from and comprise of technical, logical n some non-technical ones. so make sure u brush up on ur technical knowledge or u would be gunned down instantly by the assessors. they came from different headquarters of BH so they expected nothing less than perfection.

let me remind u that u r in tough competition. the assessors gave rough figures of more than 1000 applicants, of coz only few will be finally selected. they want the best of the best. so u definitely have to be competent in technical area n show qualities demanded by the job. this job is no joke. however, to get in this field is even tougher. well waiting is also the tough part about this.

I did ask but wasn't told. But there weren't many who got invited to the event. Roughly about 20. So logically, out of those 20, maybe a few would be selected. Not many I suppose. After all, this is not a new company so they won't be taking a lot of new ppl. Plus, they did mention there that they ONLY wanted the best of the best... So if u assume about 99% percentile being the best out of 1000 ppl, u looking at 10 vacancies, plus minus 1-2 ppl... The good news is there are lots of o&g companies. Lot smaller than MNC players but could be a step closer for better career. FYI, I sent lots n lots of CVs. Some I did sent twice or more. I guess lots of fresh grads engineer did it as well. Unless they decided to further study for PhD or Masters. Tough getting into this field.

agree. most (like 98%) looking for an engineer wif minimum 3-4 years of experience... so fresh grads really having hard time looking for one. except for some ppl who got contacts on the "inside" of the companies or some others who performed quite well during internship. i did well for mine but not sure wanting to continue. wasnt really o&g companies - related but not directly... maybe i should have accepted... cry.gif

only few companies state something like "fresh grads are encouraged to apply". even so, if they managed to get experienced ones, they wont bother to ask fresh grads for interview or such... also, there are instances that fresh grads are subjected to super low pay wif odd n long hours due to lack of experience. how these companies expect us to be equipped wif years of experience just after uni graduation never ceases to amaze me... if they counted 4 years of uni life as experience, well, i doubt so...

most of my uni-mates ended up working in different fields of engineering (even plantations) or shifted to business-oriented ones. including myself. hopefully i can get a chance to join o&g companies... but as time passes, i understand that my chances are getting ever slimmer. ironic for someone who spent 4 years in engineering courses ended up working in services companies... should have taken some business or management course instead n save all those hours understanding n memorizing complex equations...

anyway it has been awhile since the event n i havent heard back from them. kept hoping they change their minds or something... so most likely i'm not selected... i'm still hoping otherwise but gotta realize that chances are pretty slim atm. ahhh... the hardship of life... *sigh* waiting for some small o&g companies n let's see how it goes.

Congrats iwanong. Well, not sure the assessment will be the same. Wad i did are some tests, interview, group presentation, kinda "problem solving" activities n some technical challenges. They cover pretty much everything. It was rather intensive stage for me. Not to worry, just brush up on your university-level knowledge. The one you learned before. If they asked those you dont know of, just politely say that you havent covered it in your course. Something along that line should be fine. They dont expect you to know everything so no pressure. Just make sure you dont relax n take things for granted. Make sure you are well prepared.

As for abib3107, which country u applied the job for? UK or Malaysia? I think they will cover your travel expenses if they do interview in UK. So, no worry there. However, u must have proper working visa to work in UK prior to getting interview request. They wont apply visa for you. Which is why they asked beforehand which country you are legally able to work. Since you have UK student visa, i think getting working visa there would be more convenient. As for the "delay", it will most likely by a few months. In some cases, weeks. Sorting out thousand of applicants is not an easy task I assure you. So you are looking at 1-3 months waiting period, at least.

Hello Marware, I actually applied for the UK position as I have a post study visa in the UK.This visa enables me to work for upward of 2 yrs in the Uk without being sponsored by any company. After which I can switch to any other work visa based on my earnings. But my fear is that I need to be home for something, so in the process I dont want to be called for an interview in the UK, so u see it will mean I fly back to the UK maybe at a tym I am yet to settle down to attend to that same thing. I sent a mail to the graduate office y/day was told the same thing u wrote here, that they have thousands of application to sort out n will get back to me asap.I am still waiting anyway.Thankx again for d tips u provided.

Ic, since u have a valid visa, it wont be a problem. U can make ur chance greater by opting to work in Malaysia. The pay is lower, of coz, if u dun mind. If u happen to be out of UK by the time they arranged an interview, the only solution is to drop wadever u do n go back to UK. Air travel n all else should be covered by them so no worry. Mind u that most companies wont reschedule interview unless they are looking for highly experienced n rare talents. The question is "are u one of them?".

Roughly it would take months to complete the selection process. Since ur phone interview is on April, safe to say u wont be called right away for maybe another 2-3 weeks. Baker Hughes would probably wait for the end of the study year, for more potential candidates. So u looking at next selection process around June/July. That's wad they do in Malaysia, at least. There is a chance they follow the same strategy. If they do, though, u would have to wait longer. Keep ur hopes high. I waited for 4-5 months since my phone interview. It is a common practice by lots of o&g companies to filter out under-qualified candidates. One way of avoiding this painful waiting period is to get someone on the inside of HR dept. So called "lobang" can make u hired in less than 2 weeks.

Glad to help smile.gif

Hi everybody over here! I have just found your forum and defenetly have the same situation - still waiting... after the interviewer`s having called. So what to say. I got my phone interview in late april, the talk accounted for 20 minutes 00 sec=)(with no any minute more or less really=)).

There were some questions alredy mentioned in here such as um.... well.... "would you be so kind to tell us about your strong points and bla bla bla... ; what working place would you select, eather with a lot of money or working conditions and so foth..... (if interesting may tell you about that in detais a bit, if remember =)).

But what i did not like really is that that the line was of the bad quality... That was so much complicated to hear her that i can not even describe. So she also hested somehere, don not know....um.... wheather that was so much complicated to talk a bit louder or sothing .... (i told her about... that she was heard poorly, so she was just like "OK, i will be talking louder" ) But anything was repited once again.....i had to reask her some questions she did not even really spell correctly. I understend English very good but the way she was talkig was like "Hello is there anybody there on the end of the wire hah? blink.gif =) " I gues she could speak in the way louder a bit... that would have been OK - In respect to my Non American origin though smile.gif . But the girl defenetly was reading by the paper (that was understood by her fast pace with some sophistigated expressions and qustions . That is why that (the interviewer) did keep the fast reading pace )

So ok ....At the end the interviewer asked me something... I did not hear (which is sad) and then she sad buy an Ok.....

So My questions(with the answers short rather if posible)
1 If i am invited to the second tour interview? what shoul i expect mmm? (applied as a Junior Fied Engineer) For instanse the math test or just a talk ah?
2 How much to wait?(Found withing trhis forum somethoing like a 6 month period - which is daaaaaamn( wink.gif ((()

@Harlem: first and foremost, i gotta say i had a hard time reading ur post. no offense intended, mate. u better brush up on ur english or use it properly. coz if u are selected for next round interview, they would look at ur english proficiency, written or oral. so take some extra care on that.

answers to ur questions:
1. u should revise on wadever u have learned in university. make sure u noe quite well the basics of every modules u learned. they may benefit u in many ways later. u dun have to master all of them to the extent that u noe them by heart. just the basics will do fine. there are some tests, commonly known as aptitude tests. try them online or buy a book to noe roughly wad to expect on these tests. practice makes perfect.
2. waiting time differs from one another as u have read here. some people get a month but most wait more than that. i cant really give an exact date but be prepared to wait for that long.

there is an easy way to find out whether or not u are selected for the next round. within this coming 2 weeks to 6 weeks, if there is no email, no status update on ur online application or no phone call saying that u are rejected, u are most likely on their shortlist. once u are in that shortlist, ur chances of getting through are high. if u dun hear from baker after 6 weeks or so, u can write to them asking about ur applications. the main point is "no news is good news". as long as they dun say u are out, u still have a chance to be selected. simple as that.

since there gotta be a long waiting period, u can research on interview questions. get prepared as early as possible. u may also want to research on baker. wad they do, who they are, their aims n etc.

Sorry for the first time). I was hurrying a little bit trying to express anything i remembered then. Oh.. but still stay dessapointed with the bad phone link(. And that is not groundless because have some experience of talking with the other representative who was clearly heard and in a good way.
Honestly saying i expext some tests like in Sclumberger (I `ve been waiting for the reply from them also sweat.gif ) and would you be so kind to tell me (if you know of course) whether these tests may be the same or not? You seem to me to have already passed all the interviews no? So well you know about hiring. Sorry in advance if i am wrong mad.gif .

And thank You once again for such a detailed explaination. I will take your notes and do my best in the way you recomended. Anyway they have not called yet so there is a little hope that they will reply later rolleyes.gif At least i am not alone which makes me feel ok with all you guys.

And the last . I understend this forum is BH devoted but if someone has heard something about Gyrodata called service company please also share with me if not difficult. Want to try this option too. There are some discussions about companyes mentioned abobe in our country as well but not as good as here. Nice to see the alive nod.gif forum

Criticize me please (that is wellcome all time) and i will improve my English faster with your help as i want to be a good engineer, no metter how innocent this may sound)

Now also waiting whether i have been succeseful with BH 1 recruitment interview or not. There are not any results still. But as some of this forum recomended me, expecting may take for too long (up to several months). When there is the free time(if it is)i would suggest not concentrating your attention on this company only and keeping on searching for some other profitable options... nod.gif

It is badly when do not khow how to check out the 1st phone interview results. sad.gif Well maybe to call or write them? Any ideas?
Some say that if they have not replied to you earlier that your condidature (for examle) is not appropriate, there is the chance that you will be invited to the second tour interview. But according to my experience (i am talking about not BH) it is not often so. Not calling may be not being succeseful within the 1st inerview=(

Once againg asking people aware - maybe to show initiative on my own and send an email??? hmm.gif

I have just received a reply from BH. Base on what they stated, there is no opening at Malaysia branch yet.
Hence, kindly be patient and you may reapply on year 2011.
Thank you.

i think so. no right or wrong. but a minute of not producing means millions of loss. so i just say fix it first. investigate later. hope it helps.

The right answer is to analize first and only after to repair it, like this the costs will be lower. You must see why it happen that, that will not happen' again. I said also firts reparing and to analize in the same time, but was wrong. I spoke with somebody who is working in this industry.

that does make sense.investigate first to avoid any error/miscalculation when trying to/after fix it.

Last time i got phone interview with BH somewhere in December last year for engineer position. I never got any feedback from them until last week which already almost one year after my 1st phone interview. I got email something like this:

Hello,

Congratulations! We would like to conduct the next step of the hiring process, which is a 30-60 minute telephone interview with a member of our University Recruiting team.

Please schedule this step online by going to http://schedule.bakerhughescareers.com .

We recommend that you provide us with a Skype account as an alternate way of contacting you. If you do not already have this information you can create an account by going to http://www.skype.com/.

Should you have any questions, please email us at graduates@bakerhughes.com.

Thank you. We look forward to speaking with you soon!

Baker Hughes University Recruiting

its another phone interview and i'm wondering what the difference between last time phone interview.

I believe there also many people facing the same situation like me. smile.gif

Well for instance,

1) What kind of technical difficulties did you encounter in your assignments and how did you overcome them?

2) Given a situation where you are in a group assignment and one of your members is not willing to co-operate, what action would you take?

3) Why and what makes Baker Hughes appealing to you?

Nothing significant other than the questions above. So, finger crossed, expect the worst and hope for the best.

ouuu ...gracias ...
because read all over the site it's better to address the name rather than Dear Sir/Madam/Hiring Manager ..
but since I didnt find any name to address to, guess I'll just go with Dear Sir/Madam ..

I had phone interview last year as well, and i put detail for phone no like this:

country code: 60
phone no: 017-xxxxxxx

they managed to call me that time.

After i updated my profile online, i put it like this:

country code: 60
phone no: 17-xxxxxxx (the 0's in front erased)

However they can't contact me which from my personal view, its the right way to represent my phone no.

Which one u use when scheduling online btw?

I have had a phone interview and the questions were like michael4171 said:

1) What kind of technical difficulties did you encounter in your assignments and how did you overcome them?

2) Given a situation where you are in a group assignment and one of your members is not willing to co-operate, what action would you take?

3) Why and what makes Baker Hughes appealing to you?

Well my finger is crossed and I wish everyone GOOD luck and All the best!

Dear all,
I had received BH email yesterday as following:

Thank you for your interest in a position with with Baker Hughes. Your qualifications have been updated and reviewed against the qualifications for Graduate Field Engineer – Malaysia, Requisition ID 39538. We have identified other candidates who more closely meet our requirements at the present time. If your skills and background are identified as a potential match for future opportunities, you may be contacted to discuss your potential interest for a future open position consistent with your qualifications and experiences.
While we do not currently have a match for you, we would like to introduce you to other great companies who may be able to give you the position you seek, right now.

Does it means i am failed in the recruitment process,or i still in waiting list?

Thanks for reply

Anyone can double verify my phone interview for me? I scheduled it on 17/3/2011 5PM EST (US time); is that meant Malaysia time 18/3/2011 7AM?
Thank you in advanced.

Hii....
well i just had my phone interview from Baker Huges (Field engineer...i just want to tell those who are yet to do it , do your home work and prepare your answers at least have a rough ideas in your head otherwise you will be like aaaaaaah..........mmmm...... through most of the conversation...the questions were similar to the ones mentioned in this thread...

basic questions about you qualification?
what is so appealing about working in baker..?
what are you expecting to gain from working for baker?
example of a technical problem you had and how you overcame it..?what did you learn from that?
example of a situation in which you were helpful as a team player?what did you learn from that?
your biggest goal ?what did you learn from that?-----> i told her starting my career at a big company , i didn't expect that she will ask me what you learned from that ....cos i didn't learn anything beside that it is almost impossible....lol

omg am laughing now ,thinking about some answers i gave....i scheduled the interview at 4PM EST and for some reason i thought that will be at 8am Malaysian time while it was 4am so i was sleeping when they called lol.....i think she knew that ,she asked me if i wanna reschedule....anw her English was very clean although she talked a bit fast but it was understandable....

my advice prepare your answers you will do much better!!!! ....
good luck to all ... wish me luck .....wink.gif

*
Hey man How's it going? Hope you got hired! Please man could you share with us those information again with a bit more explanations regarding
the 2 day in-house assessment of Baker Hughes experiece for the Field Engineer position because I am one of the candidates who has been invited for that event!!

I mean what kind of tests we are gonna have, presentations
we are gonna give (about what), problem solving (is it like IQ Test?, technical challenges (what kind of challenegs? you mean physics and calculus exams?...etc.
Thanks in advance!

just be prepared to wait for a few weeks or months before they get back to you for the 1st stage - phone interview.
And it is not easy to get their attention.

Based on your post, it appears that the hiring managers of Baker Hughes are kind of desperate in looking for suitable candidates, as if they are not getting enough qualified job applicants from HR department.

On the other side, there are a lot of job applicants, who have repeatedly sent resumes to HR officers, but are unsuccessful even in getting an offer for interview.

Okay, I understand that HR officers have difficulty in sorting out the resumes, and it takes a long time, for sure. Having said that, how come in some cases are the resumes of suitable candidates not passed to hiring managers, that hiring managers have to resort to perform external “unofficial†recruiting? It just begs the question on the effectiveness in the process of sorting out the resumes. hmm.gif

Yes, as feekle said, it is just not fair to those diligently sending resumes through proper channel, such as Baker Hughes Online Job Portal.

i think this is normal for many big companies out there
let's think how hard they ought to choose someone from maybe 10000+ ppl in their database, by the time i think feeling and perception started to kick in.
so u have to be extremely talented and bright cuz there are too many average people out there.

This is quite infuriating. mad.gif I've been trying to get their attention since 2011 through the proper channels but it all comes down to who you know and your luck, I guess. Sigh. I got rejected for that particular post countless times that I've just given up on Baker.

You forgot another trait that you must have to get noticed from the 10000+ people, you must know someone. tongue.gif
I'm not saying EVERYONE does it. I'm saying there are people who go through the right channels and are talented, bright and lucky enough to secure a job. Some people just know somebody.

So any HR people here willing to help out? icon_question.gif haha.

Hey guys, I had my telephone interview a few days ago and they sent me an email saying they will let me know if i've made it through to the next round within 30 days. All of the questions i was asked were related to "give me an example of a time when you ...." type of questions. Nothing other than that.

I have applied for Field Specialist position Netherlands, applying from Malaysia.

There was one question i didn't quite get though. The interviewer asked whether i;ll be able to handle my own documentation fees or something similar to that. To be honest, i thought big companies pay for the candidates transportation fees and hostel/accommodation fees. Does anyone have any experience with this? Would be glad to know more.

will keep you updated about the progress.

regards
Seager

I've just got a call from one of their recruiters. Scheduled for a Competency-Based Interview (phone) tomorrow.
30 minutes, 9 questions.

QUOTE
For each question, you will be given 3 minutes to provide your answer in a short, concise, and detailed manner.  In order to do this, you will be asked to describe situations where you had to achieve a certain goal or overcome a specific difficulty. Your answers to each question should be organized in this format:

SITUATION: Describe the specific situation from the past either in school or recent job

TASK: Describe the task that you need to do in that situation

ACTION: Describe what you did to achieve your goal

RESULT: Describe the outcome

This is for the Graduate Manufacturing Engineer position btw.
Anyone else been through a similar phone interview before?

i did last week.

it was a fairly new experience for me. I still find it awkward since there is a lack of direct contact, human interaction goin on.
9 questions , most of it revolves around your previous experience and how you handle problem encountered at your workplace.
Practice and try not to rush in.

best of luck to the both of us smile.gif

Thanks for your reply. I feel kind of weird. I think this is new technologies to interview somebody.
May I know something from you? Did you use your phones or laptop? Which one is more easier?

Hope we can succeed to the 2nd round.

I am currently employed, and on a very tight schedule as I have to be in and out of the country very often. I received the email a day before my departure. I was thinking of downloading the phone app and did it at the airport, but it feels really awkward talking to my phone to no one. LoL.

I decided to go back and do it on my laptop, dress up like a normal interview and give it all out. So i think it depends on your flexibility. Laptop still is the best one for me.

They normally will only proceed to the second round after months of vigorous first round. I do not keep my hopes high on this. The latest we can hear from there probably on the month of December.

did mine last week. Before you start recording the real interview, you'll be prompted to practice first. My advice, practice 3-4 times until you comfortable. and 8/9 of the questions asked are technical. you just need to know how to relate with your past work/uni experiences.

all the best to you bro.

Guys who have just been interviewed recently, there's a news that might not be up to our likings though.

Halliburton proceed with the buying of Baker Hughes. Most probably the recruitment is to be put on hold while they need to sort out the new managerial process.
Just wish that they wont let us wait for far too long, I really want to be in either of the company.

I see no luck in SLB, wish that HLB and BHI will finally let me in the service companies fraternity.

the recruitment is not entirely freezed. it's just slowing down so yeah, the chances are still there. one of my friends was recently hired and sent to Texas. on a side note, another friend of mine who has been working for almost 2 years is pretty worried over his career due to some internal rumours of retrenchment.

its Okay, try again next time.

I put zero expectation on the results, the plummet of oil price really affect these services company.
they probably have reduced the quota for the employment or might have stringent the criteria for selection.

Pray that the oil price stop falling into the abyss.

Thank you!

Did the English test yesterday and received the result on the same day. So far haven't receive any response from BH yet. Overall it wasn't difficult, but I would recommend to do it in a quiet room. You will be briefed on the test with example question before you begin the real test. So imo, there is nothing much preparation that you can do.

Good luck to you too!
