Hardware responses doesnt depends solely on processor clock speed. Milestone has the advantage of PowerVRX
*
I agree with your statement. Although the Milestone's OMAP 3430 (Cortex A8) runs at 550MHz, it can run circles around any ARM-11 core running at similar clock speeds. However, there are no information whether PowerVR's capabilities are used for UI acceleration except for gaming.

In fact, the Android OS platform is quite fragmented with so many hardware and builds. We see the HTC Hero/Magic running Android UI so smoothly when the code is optimized. Currently I cannot say Android runs smoothly on Milestone. There are still some UI choppiness. This is the same case with WM phones.

Unless Milestone is open for custom ROMs, we will have to rely on Motorola serving the code. Thats just too bad.

QUOTE(Droidz @ Mar 9 2010, 08:11 AM)
Has anyone tried overclocking your Milestone yet? (SetCPU for example, http://www.pokedev.com/setcpu/)
*
From the source I read, it will not work. Most of the firmware parts are locked. So even if you have root access, SetCPU will not work. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks for the info...

I think you should stick and be contented with N1. Soon enough N1 will receive a new kernel update or you can get hold of Cyanogen ROM with highmem tweak. That thing runs smoothly! On the Milestone, no matter how capable the hardware is... it still lacks RAM. By the way, X10 really lags and stutter. I don't know if the code will be optimized on launch but lets hope it will.

Droid is for US and it's LOCKED. Milestone is for Europe, Asia and ETC and it's UNLOCKED. Go for Milestone

Yes, you're right. But from a custom ROM point of view, only Droid's bootloader is not locked which means you're free to put in whatever custom ROMs you wish to apply. The Milestone's bootloader is locked so you can't do anything. But root works. I've found a forum where there are currently a group of Motorola veterans finding a way to overcome the bootloader protection. They have achieved a significant milestone (ironic) in understanding the protection being used but have not overcome it yet.

Its the same thing actually. Except you can't use DROID in Malaysia due to different network used.

Ah.... Thanks a bunch for e info guys. Since the show stopper is unable to use in MY, then I guess the next time i post a question will likely be when I fail to root the phone to 2.1 or something. Haha..

You can already enjoy (technically) 2.1 on your Milestone if you have one already. I posted a so called custom ROM for Milestone. It works beautifully and its fast. It doesn't need rooting and it avoids the bootloader protection because it doesn't replaces it. Its just a bunch of core apps and tweaks from 2.1.

But you need to update to 2.0.1 in order to apply that custom ROM.

N1 seems to have quite a few problems, too bad HTC Malaysia does not support this phone, else I would have bought it

Simple. Openness tongue.gif. You want to customized your phone with all the custom ROM development scenes. You want access to the file system so you can do simple things like transferring a video for immediate viewing instead of syncing via iTunes. You can download an album from the internet. Tag it with album art, dump into phone and voila... you have added a new collection to your library. Simple.

When I pass on my iPhone and got the Milestone... I was a bit reluctant. I didn't want to leave my favorite applications. To be honest, iPhone has one of the best collection of applications and games. Going to Android is like going back in time when iPhone was still in its early stage. Simple apps, simple games and really craptastic graphics hehehehe...

But I have faith in Android. Just today, Google released a new NDK that enables OpenGL ES 2.0. Just what developers need to get things really going!

Yeah I read about them too. Here are the ones I am aware of:

1. Weak radio antenna (causing poor 3G reception performance specially in weak areas)
2. Inaccurate multi-touch
3. Color accuracy of the OLED (related to shades/tones)

What else?

as a user of nexus let me answer it on behalf of other nexus users.

1) somehow the weak radio antenna issue is become better and better with newer radio update.. doesnt matter whether it's official or leaked, but still in my case it improves a lot...

2) i never had multi touch problem like in the youtube video.. i wonder whether i'm lucky or he is unlucky.. hmm

3) i guess the banding (if that is what u meant) only occurs in the stock rom. when i changed to cyanogen and now i'm currently using desire alpha rom, i never have the issue. but to be fair, even with stock rom i dun think it's really noticeable for us to classify it as an issue.

the REAL issue of this nexus is the battery consumption is damn poor. it really bad compared to iphone 3gs (which is not that good either).. so can u imagine how bad it is..
for eg in my case today.. i had 3 meetings from 10.30 to 12pm, 3pm to 4.30pm and 4.45 to 5.45pm.. so i rarely used my hp except before meeting or in between meetings. i had my phone fully charged in the morning before i came to work (around 6.30am) and now left only 65%. if i've no meeting like yesterday, at 6pm my battery will only left 30% sad.gif

That's the fate of smartphones. The more powerful it gets, the more juice it needs but since there's a limit to how much can be packed into a phone's battery, well, ready your charger at all times.

By the way as for N1, on daily use you might not be having any trouble because it still registers the same gesture, just not on the right side of the screen. No problem for basic use but usage which needs precision might be a little problematic (eg: gaming).

When I checked power statistics, it was the screen that used 60%. Now that my Milestone is not brand new and I am not installing and testing so much, light daily use gives me 2+ days of battery. Quickly switching off the screen as soon as done using helps too.

Does anyone know if the battery is a unique model or shared with some other phones, so maybe not expensive to carry a spare?

I agree. I think a radio update may be able to resolve the problem especially on the falling back/switching of 2G/3G policies. Like making it less aggressive. Regarding the multi touch issue, I read that the inaccuracy was demonstrated with a 2 point test. Not sure how it will affect usability. Maybe gaming may take a hit. Again not sure.

You are right regarding the banding. Its not noticeable on regular usage unless you're displaying single color shades. Again a firmware or custom ROM may resolve things.

Personally speaking, I think the Live Wallpaper sucks a lot of battery power. On the Droid, removing it does make the system more responsive and power efficient. Real time widgets also sucks a lot of battery. And the processor does take a toll on the battery life.

Yeah I notice that my battery life is improving as I charge and discharge. Hopefully can reach your mileage of 2+ per cycle.
