Got my Milestone from A-bites today, Euro version with 2.0

Happy to see Market but after linking it to Gmail and browsing about 15 mins (nothing downloaded) my balance went down by $30 :-( Any tips for cutting costs on downloading apps?

Getting message about upgrade. Is this for the 2.1, which is not priority for me?

Can't seem to get Bluetooth to work. Pairing but no connection.

Should be 2.0.1 since 2.1 has not been released yet

Is this the one which improves camera performance? I think I remember reading it can be downloaded from site on PC instead of OTA. If so, then transfer by USB to what target, then...?

you mean you browse the market also cost RM30??
*
Yup, dunno what exactly I did! I guess it connected to internet via 3G data packet service and I paid for looking at all the pretty apps icons. Possibly, also by registering my Gmail, it downloaded some more stuff, maybe connected to Facebook because I notice some foreign friends' phone numbers showed up in my Contacts although I've never called them with my Malaysian SIM.

@Sano TQ for tip. I read Wiki about APNDroid. Temporarily, I just changed to an expired SIM until I learn basics.

Can I use another SIM, Postpaid, to install apps then put back my Prepaid? Any DRM issues, etc?

Wi-fi better mar!!

Heheh, getting smarter... earlier not near any wifi, too excited and curious, just turned Market on. Now downloading with wifi free. Really feel stupid wasting $30 :-#

OK Sano, got APNDroid. Next must do homework read the above pinned suggestions from Android veterans. Meanwhile going a little DL crazy. Wonder how many apps the handset mem can take? Some dictionaries say they are loading data files into SD card.

BTW forgot to say AutomationBites great service -- fast, friendly, good price.

That'd be a great deal. Love my Mstone but after using it all day, hand gets tired, it's so heavy, really solid metal build quality.

Now trying out Media Link from CD.

Free screen protector!

My new unit came with plastic sheets stuck on the front, back and under the slider. I trimmed the right side tab off the screen piece and then lightly scratched off the printed stuff on the edges of the plastic sheet. I've been using the touchscreen with no problem and it seems clear enough. When this gets tatty then I'll think about something better.

Saw this interesting report in the Nexus thread. Good list of Apps but some are problematic (KL, Fring). I now have a looooong menu and would like to have more home screens (one just for fun & games).

Useful for Milestone: Profiles, GPSTest, Media Gallery, PDF Viewer, Ringdroid. Trying Big Buttons, Shapewriter. Your recommendations welcome.

Hi Guys,

Another N1 user reporting in.. got mine last 2 weeks from irwan6179..

In summary:
1. 3g issue - After setting up the celcom 3G APN (thanks to Bahathir), I do have a spotty issue even after the updates. After checking couple of forum, got the solution to set the network to WCDMA only and now the 3g connection works fine event inside my house.
2. I have no regret not buying the Iphone biggrin.gif
3. Battery - I got no issue charging my phone everyday smile.gif
4. My Current Application
   a. Astro file manager - 5 star
   b. Speed Test -
   c. Handcent SMS - love it
   d. APNdroid - disable the APN
   e. MixZing music player- Love the widget
   f. Google maps - overall is good but the GPS not that accurate (is this a prob??)
   g. SwiFTP - FTP share
   h. contact - great with FB sync
   i. fring - Voip
   j. KL Traffic Cam - currently only from ITIS camera
  k. Earthquake - juz wanna to know the earthquake all around the world (cool)

The rest works fine for me.. plus I'm still exploring the phone...

Really glad we have this forum, thanks to all especially to shahz for the great effort.

Cheers!

I've had a tough time getting used to both the generic touch-screen and slider keyboards. I have to touch with the edge of my thumbs and press the top edge of the slider keys, and still lots of errors.

The Big Keys download is good but I really love Shape Writer. Only wish these could all incorprate a better way to backspace, which is often needed to fix keying mistakes.

KL Traffic doesn't show videos but OK with photo images.

Lack of radio in the Milestone sad.gif but internet stations are good. Several voice items give a message "Recognizer not present" Dunno how to fix.

Bluetooth File Transfer useful for accessing folder contents.

as far as i know, Android doesnt support video call just yet. maybe they will include this into their next release but only if ppl demands for it. thats why all these Android handsets dont come with a front facing camera.

but my opinion is that, video call is just kinda lame. hahaha
*
I've had two Japanese phones with dual cameras since 2003 and never once made a video call -- none of my friends had 3G or any interest in it, and after a while forgot all about it. They all got more interested in Facebook pix & vid swapping.

A friend just got a cheap 2G only Corby and it has dual cameras, so that means it is not very expensive to implement.

Have we forgotten the early phones with cameras that had a little dome mirror stuck next to the lens so you could aim the single back camera for a self portrait? Can we buy those somewhere and stick it on the Milestone?!?!

Added on February 21, 2010, 4:49 amOMG every friend I showed the Milestone to said they want one. Even the ones who already owned an i* ! *trite, unmentionable

Anyway, I have a complaint. No hole for Japanese style add-ons. I value my Milestone so much I"ll go back to wearing a chain on my jeans, but no place to anchor it!!! Rumours of a Google N2 which is a red & black Moto with a big loop for tying on decos. Does it pay to be an early tech adopter?

All phones are the same (the innards). What differs between regions are the apps that comes with it. Market and such. I'm not sure which region comes with what or lacks what though.

Mine has Android 2.0

Anyone have 2.0.1? Any noticeable improvement, esp camera?

im still wondering how much battery life you are getting out from the droid, with constant facebook, twitter and other updates over 3g, maybe with moderate web browsing.

now that there are quite a lot of you with droids, i want know how things fare?
*
Needs daily recharge while downloading and testing new stuff. Don't know yet how long if on 2G standby with screen mostly off. (So much to play with!)

I got a few nice free apps from SlideME.com Some paid ones are as cheap as US$0.10 However, some apps can be downloaded into SD but no Install button.

About 2.0.1 -- The Motorola forums have a lot of comments about bugs in 2.0.1 such as skipping MP3, WiFi quitting suddenly, etc. However, some seem to think the autofocus has corrected itself after the software passed a certain date, or else Moto has quietly sent a patch OTA!?!!

Uh, oh.... looks like first fault looming. Suddenly cannot USB-PC link and cannot USB-PC charge the battery. I suspect a cable problem, feels like the same thing that happened with one of my China MP3 players -- I tried another cable and then the MP3 was OK. Milestone parts made in China, like everything else nowadays :-( Now maybe we'll see about AP local warranty.

Aha, fortunately yes, when I got home and tried it. PC connection still no good. (It was fine until yesterday.) So now a mystery.... Is there a setting or app that can cause this?

did u try to restart your phone? (i know this might sound noob  blush.gif )
coz i face the same situation before, due to i killed some running apps/program by using the task killer.
after restart seems fine for me. smile.gif
*
Phone power on/off yes. Do you mean "factory reset" wiping all apps? OMG reluctant to start all over again!

I didn't do the above yet but later:

You are right! I reset/cleared the Ignore list in Taskiller and everything is better. The white charge light is on again and the SD is seen by my PC. Somewhere in there I turned on Phone Portal. Maybe killing it too fast via Taskiller caused something. Maybe the battery time saved by Taskiller is not worth the trouble?

Thanks for the heads-up.

electronic devices such as handphone and etc, the value is dropping very fast.....
so my advise is if u very desperate, go for it. or else, when u wait until shadow is out, there'll be another new model. the waiting games never ends blush.gif

And think of it this way too, Leo & I both didn't know about APN Toggle and wasted RM$25-30 connecting to 3G. You will benefit from reading the advice here, so your Milestone will be that much cheaper!

Mine very much OK. False alarm about cable earlier -- it was my own fault not understanding how an app affected the system. Nothing wrong, 1 month so far, daily downloads, wi-fi, BT, trying apps, recharging.

What clinched my decision to buy was a review that praised the Nexus but said it would be a fast changing plastic has-been (my words). The Moto handset build is such solid quality it will be a long-term keeper phone.
