General Tips & Tricks - 5800 & N97

General Tips

1. Use Dialer and press # for about 2 seconds will switch the profile between Silent and General; press and hold 0 will open the web browser; press and hold 1 will open the voice mailbox.

2. There is a shortcut key for Music, Gallery, Share, Video, Web shortcut at the top right corner just below the front camera.

3. Press and hold the Green caller button when standby mode will activate the voice command. You could call the name from the contact or application name.

4. Organize your sms by grouping them like outlook by Messaging -> Option -> Setting -> Text message -> Other -> Show messages in groups -> Yes.

5. Notification light will blink if there is unread sms/missed call. It could be turned off at Settings -> Notification light -> Off.

6.If the touch input is not accurate, you could calibrate your screen at Touch Input-> Touch Screen Calibration -> ( Tap around the 4 dots at the corner).

7. Turning control functions:
a. Rotate your screen horizontal or vertical
b. Silence your phone for incoming call by rotate your phone with screen facing down.
c. Snooze the alarm by rotating phone screen facing down

8. Theme effect will give 3D and transition effect if on but will slow down your tube considerably. Settings -> Personal -> Themes -> General -> Themes effects -> On/Off

9. Shortcut to exit application : Press and hold the middle white button then press and hold the program that you wish to quit, an open/exit option will pop out (useful for those haven’t install handy taskman yet).

10. When using handwriting input, slide from left to right is Spacebar, right to left is Backspace.

11. Organize your menu by Menu -> option -> organize. You could drag and drop the location of the application you wish to relocate.

12. How to update your Nokia 5800 firmware using your phone.

Presss *#0000# to display phone factory information and firmware
Now press options and select check for updates
The newest update is sent to your phone from nokia
Download and install updates.
This is done using GPRS or WIFI Connectivity.

13. Tap the Clock to bring out the Clock menu and make your alarm, alarm repeat is now built-in.

14. Tap the “General” or Date (the set Profile besides the clock) and the Profile selection menu pops out, almost similar to pressing the “Power” button in all S60, but here the Remove memory is not shown, but “Calendar” shortcut is included and the other profiles as well.

15. If you are on the Numeric Keypad, pressing the [#] key alternately will toggle the General and Silent Profiles, same as before, which means long press on zero [0] will bring out bookmarks for the Web.

16. Tapping on the displayed To do or Calendar entry will bring you immediately to that particular item.

17. Tapping the Active Icon on the Top Left (near the battery indicator) will give you shortcuts for any of the active icons.

18. Long press on the Green Call Button will still activate the Voice Command Prompt.

19. Long press on the center button is similar to the Long press on the “Menu” key (the yin-yang key on most S60) which will bring out the menu for all the active applications.

20. To Backup all your phone data, Just go to Menu -> Applications -> File Manager -> Backup and Press “Backup Now” in the Options Tab. You can also set it up for an Automated Backup Daily/Weekly.

21. When browsing the Internet, in case you’re wondering if you can zoom in/out a page, just double tap on the screen where you want to zoom and it will be done. Usually you can just drag the page to reach where you want, but there’s also a scroll bar that activates only when you move the page up/down. It’s a nice feature as it gives you an idea of how long a page really is.

22. Switching between General and Silent mode. Open dialer then long press #key.

23. Getting all open apps. Press and hold the menu key.

24. Handwriting training. Menu>settings>phone>sensor settings>touch input>handwriting training.

25. For Hard resetting your phone, just switch off your mobile, then press the Red, Green and Camera button together. Your device will get Hard Resetted.

26. Get the Red One and partner it with the Red Nokia BH-503 Stereo Bluetooth to get an awesome wireless sonic experience.

Battery Saving Tips

1. Always turn off wireless scanning, Bluetooth when not in use.

2. For those not using 3G, choose your network mode to “GSM” instead of “Dual mode” which will consume more battery. Settings -> Connectivity -> Network mode -> GSM.

3. Less Display Light.

a. Setting -> Phone -> Display -> light sensor (move the slider to the left)
b. Setting -> Phone -> Display -> Light Time-Out (lesser time to save battery but annoying if too short while you are playing games).

4. Always terminate the application properly that is not using by using Option ->Exit. It might be running background and consuming battery which you don’t know.
Memory Saving Tips

1. Restart your phone if the memory less than 30MB, you could either soft reset (User a dialer and dial 5 * * then call) or hard reset by pressing the power button.

2. Use Handy Taskman to close all application regularly or kill application that is not in use.

Camera & Picture Tips

1. Some noise could be reduced if set the ISO sensitivity to low instead of auto.

2. When viewing pictures, you could use your stylus to view for previous (slide left) or next (slide right) picture like iphone feature.
Video

For converting video that is high quality to play at 5800, should use the mp4 format as below (All is 16:9 widescreen):

a) Xvid @ 678kbps resolution 480×272
cool.gif Xvid @794kpbs resolution 640×352
c) H.264 @ 512kbps resolution 400×224
d) H.264 @ 550kbps resolution 400×224 (Recommended).

Music Tips

1. If you can’t find your songs after transferring from your pc to memory card, go to music player -> Option -> Refresh library.
Application Tips

1. Always install your phone theme on the memory cards. This is because if some theme does not work (Christmas tree) then you need to flash your phone.

2. Uninstall your application in proper way. Use Menu -> Setting -> Application mgr. -> Installed apps -> Choose application then option n uninstall.

3. Adding 3D effect on your theme. Turn your theme effect via menu>settings>personal>Themes>General>options>theme effects.
Some of the shortcuts that might come in handy for any Nokia 5800 XpressMusic or N97 owners

1. #06# To know the IMEI Number of your device.
2. #2820# To know the address of the Bluetooth device.
3. #7380# To Restore Factory settings on the phone with default password 12345.
4. #92702689# To Access Nokia’s Life Timer.
5. #62209526# To know the Mac address of Wi-Fi you are using presently.
6. #7370# For Soft resetting your phone with default password 12345.

@tachlio : FOTA updating doesn't necessarily requires you to reinstall your stuff. Well, not mine at least. even though it says "It is advised to do so"..

That's where FOTA/NSU differs. You download the whole package for NSU, but only the required thing thing for FOTA (i think). that's y FOTA updating is faster than NSU tongue.gif

@vexus : serious? actually it frees up some memory. refer old post. anyway there's no point in upgrading a FW if there is no improvement. that's what FW are all about : improvement and stability...

@sklchan : Check the box, on the back side ( and I mean the back side of the box tongue.gif ), if u bought the downgraded version of tube, it should write something like "TV-out not supported" or something like that. Refer old posts (very2 old post), got someone put a picture of the text on the box. If don't have, maybe then u're cheated, but then just to be safe, check your manual. Manual should describe if yours support or not. If support, still no TV-out, then u're seriously cheated (though it is almost impossible to get so since sellers nowadays very baik de smile.gif )

not sure why, but when i checked my LOG, my tube always searching and try to connect with WLAN or internet connection.

well, sometimes 6.42am, 1042am, 1242am, 1042pm, 642pm, 1242pm.... i can see from the "log", my tube will search for all the Internet connection which i previously used from some HOTSPOT for wifi. example, McDwifi, KFCwifi....bla bla bla... long time already, but i didnt really care about it....

here is the things, last week, my tube connected to the diginet.... everytime when its search, will end up connecting diginet, and cost me RM 2xx since 21 Oct....

i still donno which software that keep on connecting wifi....

DO someone from here, experiencing same things?
*
For me I've deleted all those maxis 3G/WAP/Streaming/MMS detail from the connection manager to prevent any "accidently connected" charges hehe
We easily can get these detail back at the phone setup tool later when it's needed.

I can say that some of the application out there DO HAVE bug that keep checking on the net for "something" also more serious is some even send out SMS to some unknown location without your knowledge, so be wise when installing "un-authorise" software into your phone.

For authorised software that I aware for checking on the net would be the Nokia Messenger, you have to set it to "Go Offline" to prevent it to keep running at the background (although u choose EXIT but the program will be still running).
The other might be the Nimbuzz (not sure if it still check after we choose EXIT).

Hehe, thanks for the reply, If I can recall I didn't see and "TV not supportes" at the box but sure I will check again later.
But when I plug-in the head phone inside the prompt there's still an AV Cable option within, actually I saja check and see coz been calling the sales girl and she insist that the later sale package don't have the AV cable woh, and at the beginning it even not include the USB cable as well but I keep on nagging saying very troublesome can't use the USB for file transfering bla bla bla then she give me the tiny short short USB cable hehe

I just wondering how many sale package type are there?? Coz the phone I'm getting is from Zitron ain't it suppose to be full package??

Added on October 29, 2009, 4:36 pmSome finding using the energy profiler:

1. Phone in standby (gsm), no wifi/bt, screen not lid and phone in lock mode
Current measure: Average 3mA through out the day, 1320mAH/3mAH=440 hours.

2. Phone in use, no wifi/bt, screen lid (75%) and phone in unlock mode
Current measure: Average 160mA within 1 hour, 1320mAH/160mAH=8.25 hours.
screen brightness: 100% > 210mA = 1320mAH/210mAH=6.29 hours
screen brightness: 75% > 160mA (different: 50mA) = 1320mAH/160mAH=8.25 hours
screen brightness: 50% > 120mA (different: 40mA) = 1320mAH/120mAH=11 hours
screen brightness: 25% > 110mA (different: 10mA) = 1320mAH/110mAH=12 hours
screen brightness: 0% > 95mA (different: 15mA) = 1320mAH/95mAH=13.89 hours

3. Phone in call mode, no wifi/bt, screen off (sensor) and phone in calling mode
Current measure: Average 165mA within 10 mins, 1320mAH/165mAH=8 hours.

4. Phone in standby (gsm), wifi/bt ON (active), screen not lid and phone in lock mode
Current measure: Average 40mA within 10 mins, 1320mAH/40mAH=33 hours.

5. Phone in standby (gsm), wifi/bt OFF, GPS ON, screen not lid and phone in lock mode
Current measure: Average 80mA within 30 mins, 1320mAH/80mAH=16.5 hours.

From these result we can say the phone will dead easily if you navigating because the screen will lid and the GPS is on which will consume 240mA not include those heavy calculation and voice feedback this make the average navigation from fresh charge can last +/- 5 hours. Other setting like video capture, music playing and photo shoot also consider heavy load on the device but only if someone can do the measurement while I'm done here.

Overall I can say the device done very well on it's standby current usage (3mA) this is out standing coz your phone still alive while only 3mA been supply to all it's hardware.
