well, open back cans have better soundstage as compared to their closed backed brethren (we're talking same models here) .... but open back =/= big soundstage....soundstage also depends on the headphone smile.gif
i think the sifu's here can give a more detailed explanation as to what gives a pair of cans an awesome soundstage
*
ohh... meaning the open back cans do have a wider soundstage compared to similar closed back cans... so i guess if there is a closed back grado, the soundstage would be even narrower... hmm, u're pretty good at explaining. i always get confused by audiophile terms. hahaha tongue.gif thanks! notworthy.gif

QUOTE(Kernkraft400 @ Jan 2 2010, 04:39 PM)
One question, would it be weird to see a person on the subway with Alessandro's MS1i listening to his music? :S
*
naah, not weird at all. they look pretty cool actually. but not sure if people nearby would appreciate ur taste in music. if i saw someone with an alessandro in a subway, i would think "damn, those cans are really sweet. wish i could have one. but why is he listening to kris allen?" (it's just an example, i have nothing against kris allen.. sweat.gif ). but really, i think it depends on how much u crank up the volume as well. if u're not the type to push the volume to the max, i dont think people nearby are going to be bothered. it's not like the subway is a quiet and calm place to begin with anyway... sweat.gif

Added on January 2, 2010, 10:36 pm-just wanna add, it would only be unbearably annoying if u sing along to the music. if u dont, i dont think anyone would actually care. at least i dont. tongue.gif

That's why. I am seriously caught in between Alessandro's MS1i, Sennheiser's HD555, and AKG K450. I am confused.

There's Philips SHP-895 headphone 2nd hand for sale at RM100 (comes with headphone stand too). Although it's old but for RM100 it's cheap enough to try. I have SHP-895 too and I love them soundwise, the only problem is the comfort. If you plan on upgrade to another headphone you still have the nice headphone stand to use too rclxms.gif

So if i buy a pair of Alessandro MS1i, I wouldn't regret a single cent, as it worth as much as i paid for them? What do you think Darth? Between Audio Technica "FOTM" ATH-AD700, Alessandro "in-your-face" MS1i, Sennheiser "dunno-why-i-buy" HD438, Soundmagic PL-21, Altec Lansing "Kayu" MHP136, Bluetooth-ed Plantronics Pulsar 590, "Blu-tack + Foam Modded" Sony MDR-XD200, Audio Technica ATH-WS70; which headphone is the best purchase?

wah lau...quote everything in my sig... actually, i don't know. let's break them down, u analyse.

1. AD700- i still find them too bright. maybe when i get home (after my fren burn them 20 hours a day with pink noise), it might get better. they're damn comfy
2. MS1i - they're pretty great for rock songs but soundstage too narrow. macam singer singing next to ur ears. it's a grado signature FWIR. it's either u like them or u don't
3. HD438 - they're a little muddy but great for action packed/ explosive movies with little dialogue. overall, not too bad for the money
4. PL21 - quite crappy, use them for my gym sessions only
5. MHP136 - bassy, lacks a little clarity. use them for bus trips now, after kena scolded by aunty
6. Pulsar 590 - i use them when i don't want wires to get in the way, like when i'm ironing or cooking. clarity is so-so. bass sux
7. MDR-XD200 - bought them only to practice modding. was crap initially but now after mod, mids are clearer and bass tighter. soundstage is like MS1i
8. WS70 - still burning in. can't comment much except it's very very bassy (tight one) and not comfy (for now)

i might be a little prejudiced coz i don't quite like iems.

if the AD700 turns out alright, it will be the best purchase.

disclaimer: me no expert. just a noobie/ newbie in this headphone thingy. take my comments with a pinch of salt.

2.MS1i : This is the problem because i tend to listen to a plethora of song genres. I listen to rock to the sounds like Radiohead, pop for example Coldplay, Electronics ; Faithless , and so on. I hope when i acquire this one, it would sound good on all my songs smile.gif

5. <-- This is funny.

You need earbuds, bud. Try PK2/3 from www.head-direct.com (not THAT cheap, but good), the AKG 319 (I think, ask akgmalaysia), any of the X-brands (check the BULK section of LYN) or the Sennheiser MX560 (from any reputable retailer)... biggrin.gif

Sony earbuds aren't half bad too, but in my experience they have CRAP short lifespans (say 3 months of hard use = die).

And IINM, yeah, the Moray is in ear.

umm, i guess it is quite disturbing to some people... some people mind , some people dont. it's such a shame that this minor flaw causes some people to look into other brands. anyway, between the MS1i and the AD700, which one would u prefer for mainly music listening? (not that i can afford the ad700, but i'll just think of it as the ad300's bigger bro)

@Kernkraft400: PL21 is an IEM. So i guess u can cross it out from ur list. but of course with IEMs, sound leakage wouldnt be an issue.

Yeah, those... Someone over at the great land of HF said the SQ rivals the PK1... biggrin.gif

Anyhow, for anybody looking for earbuds, come and take a look see here, by our own ClieOS: http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f103/earbuds-round-up-441400/

A little warning before you click the linky though: Sorry about your wallet... brows.gif

And people, any recommendations regarding a budget full-sized sturdy enough to be taken onto pillows? One that sounds (vaguely) like a TF10 (V / U shaped freq curve, huge soundstage)... hmm.gif

Currently looking at Audio-T's lower end A range and maybe the M series... I like the AT flappy height adjustment system a lot... biggrin.gif

I have no idea how they sound like though... hmm.gif

what is the criteria of your sonics?

Will you be using an amplifier?

A few to name:

-Beyer DT880/990 <---- only because bloody kampfy.

-HD650 <---- Least annoying headphones, you can listen to them forever and not being fatigue

-HD580/600 <---- Nice also, but i prefer the bigger brother. HD580 = HD600 (same drivers, different tolerance)

-Audiotechnica Line <---- Too many high end variants, which is kinda facepalm. The wood series are mainly okay but they are a bit too rich for my tastes.

hey guys/girls, sorry to bump things down in price. but any recommendations to headphones below/around rm250?

just looking for a headphone to plug in to pc and listen of sony mp3 player.
prefer clarity over bass and not in-the-face type of sound.
listen to piano/guitar intensive music more then thumping beats.

i was looking at the shp-8900 and the ath-30. how are they?
currently just using yuin pk3.

any opinion or recommendations are truly appreciated. happy.gif
