Neville hoping for long run

QUOTE
Gary Neville is finally hoping to be over his injury nightmare.

The Manchester United star has been dogged by injury over the last few years.

He broke his ankle against Bolton in early 2007, which caused him to be sidelined for nearly 12 months.

Numerous muscle niggles have dogged him since his recovery and that has prevented him from playing for England for over two-years.

Having overcome a groin tweak he picked up in pre-season, he is in line to start his second game of the season this weekend against Tottenham.

"I just hope to say as fit as possible and play games for the club," he said.

"I am doing everything I possibly can and the medical staff are helping me as well."

Despite having the likes of Wes Brown, John O'Shea, Rafael and Fabio in his squad - all of whom can play right-back - Neville is confident that he still has something to offer.

"The manager would not have me here if he didn't think I contributed in some way," he said.

"I can contribute a lot more when I am fit."

He is just now hoping that he can go on an injury free run.

"Over the last two years injury has been a concern for me," he admitted.

"It is a concern for every footballer. It is frustrating.

"But it is not something I think about every day. I have just had to deal with it."

in my opinion, i think rooney cannot play upfront. he ought to be behind an out-and-out striker. because if he doesnt, he wont get the ball. rooney is a talented player, he can do wonders. that is IF he gets the ball. berba is not living up to the expectations yet. whilst owen, i dont think he is fit enough to play full 90 minutes.

All action Rooney vs slightly more quiet Rooney(more efficient?).. SAF prefers the latter though.

Actually I prefer the former but it's Rooney who keeps asking to play as CF..

no not that im not satisfied. none what so ever,

what i meant was in my opininon he would do better if he plays behind another striker. yes he is scoring goals. but we are not seeing much of the beautiful football that Man Utd showed over the past few years. if he plays upfront he needs to wait for the ball to come to him. whereas if he plays behind someone, he can indirectly dictate the play and feed the other striker. at the same time, he can score goals as well.

“He wants to be everywhere all the time,” Phelan said. “But we have 10 other good players on the field and sometimes he has to realise the place where he does his best work is the best place to be. Wayne sometimes drifts around and there were instances of that against Birmingham. His overall performance was good but he needs to remember when we create chances he scores goals.”

He asked SAF to play him centrally(anywhere, as long as it's central). It's SAF who wants him to play as a CF(can see last two seasons). This season he has a bit more freedom, but still not as much as he had previously like in his first few seasons here. It's clear where the coaching staff thinks he's best used at right now reading that quote by Phelan and SAF previously. They turned Ronaldo into a deadly weapon.. guess they want Rooney to be the same too.

Beautiful football? 06/07 was great. Scholes was on song, and Ronaldo was actually a very good and effective winger that season. Since then, Scholes have slowed a lot, and Ronaldo became less and less effective as a winger, but instead turn himself into a very effective scoring machine. Nani and Anderson inject some excitement in their first season, but last season both were badly on form. And apart from Rooney, Giggsy, and Ronaldo(scoring wise), the others didn't show up consistently, that's why last season sucks attacking wise for us. We only scored 68 goals was it in the league?

Sure he can dictate the play and all that, but SAF wants him to be further active in the final third(striker-wise) rather than be everywhere freak that he was before. Signing Tevez.. and then Berba, who both seems pretty good playing behind a striker(Berba, wants to set up teammates more rather than scoring himself). It seems he wants Rooney to turn into a striker.

Think of it this way. Rooney is already really good playing in that withdrawn role, his vision and footballing brain, he will always have that. But as a striker for a top team, you would expect better returns of goals/finishing. He's still young of course, and his record is pretty good. But there's room for improvement in his finishing. He can score lots of goals in burst, but then he'll be quiet for a while.. until he wears back his finishing boots. His movement is great. His finishing is great too when he's in the mood.. if he can do it consistently, plus his other attacking abilities, just think what a player he would become.

Lennon is Evra's bane, and we all know that from past encounters. With the kind of form the man with the thick eyebrows (after Bosingwa) is on, we'll have cause to worry on our left side of defense. Might see Fergie decide to place Rooney on the left to double team on him sad.gif
