AS the world's biggest and richest club, Manchester United reach a global fanbase.

Part of the attraction for fans around the world has been the football luminaries, such as George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, who have graced the Old Trafford turf in a Manchester United shirt over the years.

Recently, Manchester United have continued to attract or develop some of the game's biggest names, with England stalwarts such as Paul Scholes and David Beckham having been regular fixtures in the Reds line-up.

The Manchester United team, past and present, reads like a who's who of world football.

It is only fitting that a great team should grace a great stadium. And with Old Trafford's recent development and the closure of Wembley, the ground is easily the largest in English football, holding in excess of 60,000 fans.

Despite this capacity, the demand to see United in action is so great that tickets are hard to come by.

But it isn't only Manchester United fans who flock to Old Trafford. The standard of the ground is such that it regularly hosts high-profile games, most notably, the Champions League Final and Great Britain rugby league games.

Rock fans have also made use of the Reds's facilities, watching a number of high-profile acts at the ground.

But it's football that will forever be synonymous with the Reds famous ground - and with good reason.

The last decade has seen Manchester United under the shrewd leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson maintain a virtual stranglehold on the Premiership crown.

Manchester United has won the league no fewer than 17 times in their history - 10 times in the last 11 seasons. They are also Cup Kings too, winning the FA cup 11 times, the league cup twice, as well as winning the European Super Cup, European Cup Winner's Cup, and 3 times being crowned European Cup champions.

Manchester United has long become a name associated with success both on and off the pitch.

As club profits continue to grow, Manchester United have become one of the richest sports clubs on the planet.

With supporters club branches on every continent, it's hard to go any where in the world and not see somebody wearing the famous red shirt of Manchester United.

Berbatov: I'm still learning

QUOTE
Dimitar Berbatov takes his art very seriously.

A born entertainer with a penchant for the unpredictable, the 28-year-old striker admits he and his colleagues relish every chance to wow the Old Trafford crowd. We recently caught up with the Bulgarian at United's Carrington training ground...

Dimitar, you’ve looked very sharp in the early part of this season. Has it helped to have a pre-season campaign and some stability, as opposed to last summer’s last-minute move to United?
It has. Pre-season is important to every player and I think now we are ready for the long season ahead. Again we are going for everything there is to win, like every year. We have a good squad. I don’t need to introduce anybody – everybody knows what Manchester United players are capable of, so we are ready to go again.

How big a relief was it to get off the mark at Wigan?
It was a relief, it is always good to start scoring. Plus, I prefer to score beautiful goals than ugly goals, and this one was really nice. I was going for the ball and aiming to catch it before him [Wigan goalkeeper Chris Kirkland]. I did it and I was thinking: 'Now I’m going to smash it in the net!' It turns out I didn’t catch it so well, but it still ended up in the net. A goal is a goal!

How highly do you rate Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen, your fellow senior strikers?
What can you say about Wayne? He’s been here for so many years, playing top football and it’s amazing that he’s only 23. When he reaches around 28, he’ll be even better. We see in training, and you can see in games, the unbelievable passion he has for football. As for Michael Owen, he won the Ballon d’Or – that says everything. I think Sir Alex was right to bring him here and he will have the chances to score many goals for us.

You’re three very different strikers – are you learning from one another?
I don’t think you stop learning until you quit football. With all the talents we have in Manchester United, they do stuff that sometimes I honestly cannot do – and I don’t even try to do because I would look like a fool! Sometimes you want to try new stuff, you see people doing things and you ask them about it. You learn from each other. To develop, you have to.

What about Danny Welbeck and Kiko Macheda?
I think they have bright, maybe even great, futures. But if they want to achieve that then I think the only man they have to listen to is the boss. They have the potential, that’s why they’re here. If you want to achieve something you need to develop that talent. The place to do that is right here, under the boss.

What have you made of United’s start to the season?
Sometimes it takes time to start well. Against Birmingham we were probably at 70 percent, then that loss against Burnley was devastating and hurt everybody. But we struck back well against Wigan.

Was the Arsenal game the sort of match the team relishes?
It’s always good to play against your rivals for the title. The way Arsenal have started this season has been unbelievable. They have scored many goals and have players who are very technically gifted. That’s what is good about them; they play good football and move the ball around quickly. Arsene Wenger has been here so long, and he has a talent for developing young players into superstars.

Last season United’s record against other members of the ‘big four’ was one win from six games. Is that something the players are aiming to rectify this season?
It is. We didn’t do well against them, but in the end we were champions. If you ask any of the other sides which they would prefer, to beat the big teams or be champions, what do you think they would say? The main goal is to win the Premier League again. We did it last year and I think we’ll also improve our results against our rivals, but in the end it’s all about winning the Premier League.

Is it true that you’re perhaps the biggest movie buff in the United squad?
Everybody in the team watches a lot of movies, but with me it is a real hobby. When you are a foreign player in another country sometimes you have a lot of time on your hands. I am always watching movies at home. If I wanted to, I could open a video store with my DVDs! At the moment, though, I am more into watching TV shows. I watch House and Entourage, and I’m waiting for the new series of Heroes and Lost. My favourite is House, I never miss an episode.

Reds on World Cup duty

QUOTE
United have a host of players away on international duty over the next week, with 17 Reds attempting to boost their country’s hopes of reaching next summer’s World Cup finals in South Africa.

Ji-sung Park and Antonio Valencia face the longest trips this week. Fortunately Park only has one match for Korea, against Australia in Seoul on Saturday.

But Valencia is in Columbia and Bolivia for Ecuador’s matches on Saturday and next Wednesday.

Wes Brown is one of four Reds - alongside Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick and Ben Foster - who joined up with the England squad for their games against Slovenia and Croatia.

However, the Reds defender is already a doubt for Saturday's game against Slovenia after picking up an injury during training this week.

There was better news for Northern Ireland, though, as Jonny Evans gave them a boost ahead of matches with Poland and Slovakia by training with the squad despite having problems with an ankle injury of late.

Fresh faces on the horizon

QUOTE
Sir Alex Ferguson may have opted not to further strengthen his squad in the dying embers of the summer transfer season, but there are plenty of reinforcements on the horizon.

As well as the impending return of squad members like Rio Ferdinand, Edwin van der Sar, Rafael and Owen Hargreaves, new signing Gabriel Obertan is recovering well from injury, and young forwards Adem Ljajic and Mame Biram Diouf may both arrive in January.

Speaking to October's edition of Inside United magazine, Sir Alex said: "Gabriel has had a spine problem, but I think he’ll be back in about a month to six weeks’ time. We’re taking our time with him because we want him back and at 100 per cent. He’s very quick, he can play both sides or through the middle and he brings a real versatility to us.

"At 16 he was one of the outstanding young talents in Europe, and he’s said to us that over this last year and a half he’s been playing with this back injury and no-one thought about getting a scan. We expect big things from him. He’s a nice boy, speaks good English and should have no problem settling in."

Ljajic and Diouf were both loaned back to their former clubs – Partizan Belgrade and FK Molde respectively – and have been closely monitored by United staff. Both may be brought to bolster the Reds' ranks during the course of the season.

"Diouf will stay there [Molde] until January, at which point we’ll make a decision over whether to apply for a work permit for him or leave him there for the full season," said Sir Alex.

"He’s a powerful boy, quick as hell, good in the air, 21 years of age and he’s done very well at Molde. Playing in Norway is similar to playing here in terms of climate, so we’ve not got an issue with that either.

"Adem Ljajic is another player who we have on loan, at Partizan Belgrade, and he’ll join us in January. He’s doing very well. He was the star of the tournament for Serbia at the UEFA Under-19 Championships over the summer."

Rooney can take Charlton record

QUOTE
Reds skipper Gary Neville says Wayne Rooney is capable of eclipsing Sir Bobby Charlton's United record of 249 goals.

At 23, and with 102 goals in 243 games to his name, Rooney has the potential to register a big total.

Neville has played alongside some fine United goalscorers during 17 years since making his United first-team debut - Mark Hughes (163), Andy Cole (121), Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (126) and Ruud van Nistelrooy (150) to name just a few. But the Reds skipper feels that Sir Bobby's long-held goals record could be under threat in years to come.

"There is a long time to go before he gets there but Wayne does have an opportunity to beat the record," said Neville. "He will have to play a lot more games and stay clear of injury because that record has stood for many years and will be very difficult to break.

"But a player of his ability should score goals. He plays centre-forward for Manchester United. That points you in the right direction."

The key will be to avoiding injuries and, of course, remaining at the club for a long period of time. But there seems to be issue there either.

"I've always said I love this club and, as long as I'm wanted here, I'll play here," Rooney was quoted as saying this week. "It's as simple as that. I can't see one reason why I should want to move. I honestly can't see me going anywhere else unless I'm told otherwise by the manager."

Based on the soccernet report, CAS did overturned FIFA's ban on Roma and reduced the duration so it might happen again.

Anyway...

Edwin hints at Dutch return

QUOTE
Edwin Van der Sar has left the door slightly ajar for a surprise return to international football ahead of the World Cup next summer.

The Manchester United shot-stopper, who is currently recovering from a hand injury, announced his retirement from the Holland squad in October 2008 after accumulating a record 130 caps.

However it appears the 39-year-old could be eyeing a return to the international fold having enjoyed another successful season at Old Trafford last term.

The former Juventus and Fulham keeper is a veteran of four World Cups but it is believed that with South Africa 2010 on the horizon he could be tempted to return and maybe end his career on the biggest stage of all.

"The rehabilitation of my injury is the most important thing right now," he told the Daily Telegraph.

"After that, I will focus on United and then we will see what is happening with the national team."

Meanwhile reports in Germany suggest that Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Rene Adler has a clause inserted in his contract that allows him to leave if the Red Devils come in for him.

The 24-year-old German international has established himself in the Leverkusen starting XI over the past two seasons, earning rave reviews.

Evans hoping to avoid surgery

QUOTE
Manchester United star Jonny Evans hopes that he will avoid having surgery on his ankle problem.

Evans had conceded late last month that he would need to go under the knife on the problem which has been troubling him for almost 12 months.

The Northern Ireland star was ready to play through the pain barrier for his country as they have two crucial World Cup qualifiers against Poland and Slovakia coming up.

"A few weeks ago it was in the back of my mind that I might need an operation, but with steroid operations it is feeling a lot better again," Evans told Sky Sports News.

Evans is now fully focussed on his country's qualifying campaign, as they are well placed in the group with just three matches remaining.

And the United man insists they are still going for top spot in Group 3.

"You have got to look to get that top-spot," he said.

"The play-offs is a lottery, top spot would be unbelievable and it is something we have to aim for, we have a chance, so why not?"

Berbatov vows to improve

QUOTE
Dimitar Berbatov has pledged to prove his worth to Manchester United with Sir Alex Ferguson ready to make the striker his 'focal point'.

The Bulgaria international has failed to justify his £30.75million transfer fee, only showing his undoubted talent in brief flashes throughout last season.

Many Old Trafford supporters are still to be convinced by the former Tottenham and Bayer Leverkusen ace, but Berbatov insists he is ready to put last season's struggles behind him.

"I think this year will be different for me," he told the Daily Mirror. "I've had a pre-season tour with the team, which I missed last year.

"And I really know how every player in the team plays now, so I can understand them better on the pitch.

"Plus, Sir Alex knows the best way he can use me. We have many games and I'm looking forward to each one so I can score goals and make my contribution to the team."

Something to prove

Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted that Berbatov suffered at times last season due to the role he was given within the team.

The Scot expects the big-money signing to flourish in the role he has been handed this term and believes that will help him regain some lost confidence.

"He probably has something to prove in the sense of his own thoughts about his first year with us," said Ferguson.

"It's difficult to say if his confidence took a knock, but there aren't many players, especially strikers, who aren't at the mercy of their confidence.

"We were a bit unfair to Dimitar last season but we know how to use him this time. He won't be playing in deep midfield positions where he found himself a lot last year.

"He's got to be in the last third, where he is a threat. We saw him like that, playing deep, at Tottenham and maybe we were wrong there.

"Once we realised, before the end of the season, he started playing further up the pitch. I think Dimitar will be the focal point of our team this year."

guys..the chelsea ban, we should look at it seriously..

we also got poach young player from their club before they reach 17 le..macheda is one of them..what if lazio go and lodge the complaint against us.. we may suffer the same fate..

If you read the article, it seems the player involved do has a contract with the previous club whereby those Italian youngsters we signed, we sort of use the "loopholes" where they yet to sign any professional contract with their club.

So its slightly different scenario BUT knowing FIFA (or Sepp Blatter), they still do anything they want eh? whistling.gif

Bit and pieces found from BBC article:

QUOTE
Meanwhile Uefa, European football's governing body, is keen to introduce a rule preventing the international transfer of players under the age of 18 after member associations, clubs, leagues and players agreed to the principle.

Speaking in March, Uefa president Platini: "The question of minors is above all a moral and ethical issue. We have a duty to take concrete steps to protect young players and training clubs."

QUOTE
Sir Alex Ferguson expects summer signing Gabriel Obertan to be back in action by early October, with the Manchester United boss predicting big things from the winger.

The 20-year-old, signed from Bordeaux in July, is yet to make his debut for the champions having arrived with a back injury.

Ferguson has revealed that the Frenchman has been playing with the problem for over 18 months.

Obertan's return to full fitness is more good news for the Red Devils boss with Rio Ferdinand (thigh), Rafael Da Silva (shoulder), Edwin Van der Sar (hand) and Owen Hargreaves (knees) all set to return within the next month.

"Gabriel has had a spine problem, but I think he'll be back in about a month to six weeks' time," he told Inside United.

"We're taking our time with him because we want him back and at 100 per cent.

Fifa - No United complaint

QUOTE
Fifa has confirmed that they have not received an official complaint from Le Havre over Manchester United's signing of Paul Pogba.

Following Fifa's decision to hand Chelsea an 18-month transfer embargo following their illegal purchase of Gael Kakuta in 2007, Le Havre have voiced their displeasure at the Red Devils' approach for their former midfielder.

Le Havre managing director Alain Belsoeur has been quoted as saying he has documents proving that United offered the 16-year-old incentives to join their ranks.

However the Premier League champions have responded by insisting that their dealings with the player were all above board.

The talented young Frenchman has not yet been registered by United and Fifa has confirmed that any complaint from Le Havre has not been lodged either.

"There has been no receipt of any complaint by Le Havre regarding this player as of today," a Fifa spokesman said.

Giggs will stay in the game

QUOTE
Ryan Giggs has revealed that he will bow out of the game at the top level and confirmed he will definitely stay in football in some capacity.

Giggs, the most decorated player in the history of English football, is closing in on his 36th birthday and knows that he must at least entertain the idea of what he will do once he hangs up his boots.

But for now the Welshman insists he is feeling as fresh and as fit as he has at any point during his illustrious career.

The winger also stated that he had no interest in dropping down the leagues once his time at Old Trafford does eventually come to an end, instead highlighting that he will seek new challenges away from the pitch.

"Football is my life, but I'm not going to be playing at 40 - and I will look for another challenge within in the game," he told the Sunday Mirror.

"When my body tells me I can't sustain playing at the highest level any more I know it will be time for me to call it a day.

"I want to finish playing at the top. I have no intention of playing in the lower leagues to sustain my playing career. I have done my coaching courses and would like to stay in the game in some capacity.

"I think there are numerous opportunities that will allow me to stay in the game, be it in coaching, the media or training in some capacity.

Bitten by the bug

"I am told that you can inadvertently fall into management - like Mark Hughes and then you get bitten by the bug."

Giggs went on to explain that the secret to his longevity was partially down to his failure with the Welsh national team.

"I've been lucky that ever since my career began I have had proper periods of rest," he added.

"Playing for Wales we never qualified for major championships, which I deeply regret, but it has helped me.

"For 18-years I've consistently had six or seven-week rests during the summer. And the decision to retire from international football in 2007 was made to enable me to sustain my playing career at Manchester United."

The all-time Red Devils appearance maker admits he has learned to cope with defeat a lot better over the years, but with United chasing a record fourth straight title this season no-one will be pursuing the crown harder than Giggs.

The 35-year-old has seen many world-class players leave Old Trafford during his time at the club, notably Eric Cantona, David Beckham, Roy Keane and Ruud Van Nistelrooy, and the veteran is confident United can succeed without Cristiano Ronaldo.

"The club won't stand still because players have left," he declared. "We will continue to evolve under the manager and maintain our challenge for silverware.

"People are making a far bigger thing of it outside the club than we are.

Prove people wrong

"Obviously Cristiano was a world-class player and will be missed - but how many times have players left United and we have been written off only to prove the critics wrong?

"I have seen great players come and go, but the drive and determination to succeed remain the same.

"Don't underestimate the manager. I have discovered over the years he always seems to come up with the answers."

Berba vows to 'sweat blood'

QUOTE
Dimitar Berbatov has pledged to do all he can to win over those who continue to criticise his playing style.

The Bulgaria international has come under fire from certain sections of the Manchester United support since moving to Old Trafford from Tottenham last summer.

His languid approach to the game often suggests that he is not giving his all, and is merely going through the motions.

As United's record signing he accepts that expectations on his shoulders are high, but he insists that he is as committed to the cause as any of his Red Devils team-mates.

"There is a winning mentality and at United success is expected season after season," Berbatov told the News of the World.

"I am aware I came with a big price tag and I am ready to prove this season just what I can do. We have a chance to make it four titles in a row and that means making history if we succeed.

"I would not say my playing style is laid back, it is just a different style.

Running

"I like time on the ball and I like space. If I can get that, then I know I can free up players like Nani and Wayne Rooney, who do lots of running.

"I am ready to sweat blood for this club. I want to create and score goals and I know I can be part of a trophy-winning team this season."

United's hopes of landing a fourth consecutive Premier League crown were dealt a blow this summer with Cristiano Ronaldo's decision to join Real Madrid.

However, Berbatov is confident Sir Alex Ferguson's side can cope in his absence and has singled out Wayne Rooney as the man to spearhead their trophy quest.

"Wayne is the biggest talent in the Premier League," he added.

"We have lost a great player in Ronaldo, but even when he was at the club Wayne was still the biggest natural talent for me.

"He has much more to his game than Ronaldo. I wish Cristiano well, but he is our past now and Manchester United can become bigger and better without him."
