Peter Schmeichel warns Ben Foster over United hopes
Manchester United goalkeeping legend Peter Schmeichel claims Ben Foster has limited time to push his claims for a regular first-team place. Edwin van der Sar is set to overcome the thumb injury that has sidelined him since pre-season within a month and Foster has been criticised after an unconvincing display during United's 4-3 victory against Manchester City on Sunday. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has given Foster the nod ahead of Polish stopper Tomasz Kuszczak so far this season, but Old Trafford legend Schmeichel, who won every major honour bar the Uefa Cup during his eight-year stint at United in the 1990s, believes that Ferguson will recall Van der Sar as soon as the 38-year-old returns to full fitness. Speaking to United Review, Schmeichel said: "Ben Foster has done well this season and he certainly looks to be a very good goalkeeper. He's getting a run of games now, but I'm sure Edwin will be back in when he's fit because the manager knows he's the right guy for the team at the moment. "I think Edwin can keep playing for a few more years yet. He's fit, he's strong and he's motivated. I think he wants more silverware and, when you want more, you can go on. I was offered another year before I retired at 40 and, physically, I was pretty sure I could have done it, but I just didn't want to. "Physically, it shouldn't be a problem for Edwin to carry on and if he wants to, then I'm sure he'll take that opportunity." United have been linked with Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and CSKA Moscow's Igor Akinfeev already this season as potential replacements for Van der Sar. QUOTE(Wan @ Sep 23 2009, 10:14 PM) Are we now judging players on just a few games now? Foster had one bad game after his shaky start against Chelsea. If we keep dropping players each time after a mistake/bad game, we wouldn't have many players in form/with confidence. If he's consistently bad for a few games(consecutive games), then he deserve to be dropped. You have got me wrongGetting PIG now is not about judging Foster. But is providing another chance for PIG. You can't keep playing him and not PIG. It is not about judging his ability. |

QUOTE(davidlow7 @ Sep 24 2009, 12:28 AM) You have got me wrong Sure Kuszczak will get a few games over the season, but he won't start over Foster and VDS when both of them are fit at the same time unless Foster really does something badly in a lot of games and lose SAF's trust. But as we know he can be stubborn and patient for some players. I think it's a bit unfair too to compare Foster's one bad game against Kuszczak's. He's had one bad game, one really shaky game and one game where it was debatable whether he should have done better with one goal he let in. 2/3 out of 8 ain't a bad start to his United career(proper season) IMO.Getting PIG now is not about judging Foster. But is providing another chance for PIG. You can't keep playing him and not PIG. It is not about judging his ability. |

As U know I never said drop Foster because of one bad game.IMHO, It is just PIG haven't been given much chance to prove himself despite he too has the experience. There is no doubt on Foster's ability to develop into a good GK, else he wouldn't be given the chance. But my opinion focus more on opportunities v current situation. So it would also be very unfair if PIG not getting the chance despite Foster's recent mistakes. Remember the one against Malaysia XI too. It wouldn't be easy to take it for PIG and he might leave us for another team.. who knows? |

QUOTE(davidlow7 @ Sep 24 2009, 12:52 AM) As U know I never said drop Foster because of one bad game. VDS was in no man's land for that 'Malaysia' goal. What do we say to that? IMHO, It is just PIG haven't been given much chance to prove himself despite he too has the experience. It wouldn't be easy to take it for PIG and he might leave us for another team.. who knows? Backup GKs don't generally get that much playing time unless for emergency/rest, and usually the managers don't change the GK a lot of times. Kuszczak would get that already, although I'm sure he's unhappy about it. Besides he had the last 3 seasons all to himself behind VDS although he was never given a consistent run in the side due to VDS being available most of the time. Foster was out on loan in two seasons, and last season he was out injured for most of the time. That's not to say Kuszczak is not good. He's a good GK and would be starter for some EPL teams. And to be fair to him, he look fairly solid in his last couple of outings for us. But we need to look back at the situation and priority. It's clear SAF sees Foster as a serious candidate for the #1 spot after VDS goes since he's been bigging up Foster ever since Foster impressed for Watford on loan. VDS is out injured right now and maybe would retire at the end of the season, and we need to find out whether Foster has what it takes or not in as many games as possible. Game at the weekend will be a big show and tell. If Foster isn't pick for that, his chances would be lessen and he need to work harder and take his next chances when given. If he is, it will be a big boost for him although if he make mistake(s) in that game too, you would feel his chances won't be good and his confidence will be shattered after that. |
