Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is delighted to see his compatriots Magnus Eikrem and Joshua King handed first-team squad numbers.

The talented young Norwegians have been given the boost ahead of Wednesday's Carling Cup tie against Wolves, and Solskjaer feels they are reaping the rewards of an impressive start to the season in the Reserves.

Eikrem has revelled in a switch from the wing to central midfield, while powerful forward King has made the step up from the under-18s with great aplomb.

"It's exciting for them, of course," Solskjaer told ManUtd.com. "They've both started the season very well, and the manager has been impressed with what they've done for us in the Reserves.

"They've been given the numbers so they've got a chance of maybe being in the squad against Wolves in the Carling Cup, and I'm very pleased for them both."

Seventeen-year-old King will wear number 41 - worn so successfully last term by Federico Macheda - while 19-year-old Eikrem has been handed the number 42 shirt.

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy has labelled Michael Owen “one of the best” after his derby-day winner on Sunday.

And McCarthy, who brings his Wolves side to Old Trafford this evening, says he’s looking forward to seeing how his defenders cope against the England sharp-shooter.

“Michael’s obviously a great player and he’s always been a top-class pro as well,” McCarthy said at his pre-match press conference.

“He didn’t need his career resurrecting but I’m sure United coming in for him gave him a massive boost. That goal he scored [against Manchester City] on Sunday was just a fabulous finish from a proper goalscorer.

“Having said that, while it’s okay for me to sit back and respect him and wax lyrical about him, I hope our defenders don’t give him a kick on the pitch.

“It will be an experience and a challenge for them to play against him but I don’t want them to give him a sniff.”

The Wolves manager believes Owen could be vital to United’s plans to retain the league this season.

“When Sir Alex brought him to Old Trafford I thought it was a brilliant signing. I always remember what happened when United signed Dion Dublin – some players just come in and lift the club. Eric Cantona did it as well, of course. And the club lifts some players as well.

“At his best, Michael Owen is one of the best around and Manchester United will probably get him up to that level again, probably just be being there and training there and playing there.

“He might not be as lightning quick as he once was, but that finish on Sunday tells you everything about him. It wasn’t a goal that made it 4-0 – it was a goal that made it 4-3 in the final stages of a big derby. He scores important goals.”

Sir Alex Ferguson is hoping Federico Macheda and Danny Welbeck can now focus on Manchester United following their recent international commitments.

The teenage strike duo have yet to feature for the United first team this season after bursting on to the scene last term.

Ferguson has acknowledged his frustration that the promising youngsters have not previously been at his disposal so far this season and hopes Italian ace Macheda and England Under 21 international Welbeck are now ready to push for roles in his plans.

"I just think that they are away that much with the youth squads they have forgotten where their real place is," said Ferguson.

"Welbeck has been called away so much with every single England squad I don't know if he is our player or their player!

"He is in every squad that is picked. The only squad he has not been in is the full squad.

"Macheda has been away with Italy youth teams all the time. He has hardly been with us."

However, Macheda and Welbeck are both expected to start Wednesday evening's Carling Cup third-round tie against Wolves, live on Sky Sports 2.
