I realize that quite a number of times when our defender back pass to him from his right, instead of stopping/kicking with his right foot he will actually let the ball roll to his left foot before doing so.

And yesterday instead of clearing with his right foot, he tried to drag it back to the box which failed miserably.

True.. Witnessing him a few times.... He has given me some hard attacks at some occasions like this where he would just take time and hold the ball instead of clearing it.

Foster seriously needs to learn that..... In big games you can't afford any silly mistake like this.

Welbeck eyes his chance

QUOTE
Having tasted success in the domestic cup competitions and scoring that goal against Stoke in the league last term, young striker Danny Welbeck is keen to kick on this year…

You made your United debut in the Carling Cup last year, then shortly after that scored that stunning goal on your league debut against Stoke. What do you remember about that day?
I’d been travelling with the first-team squad for a while by that time and playing in the Carling Cup was a great experience. I’d been included in the matchday squad for league games before, but I’d not been named on the bench. So when I got told I was a substitute for the Stoke game I was really pleased, I couldn’t wait to hopefully get my chance to come on.

So when you were stood on the sidelines, what was going through your mind?
We were 3-0 up against Stoke and I got told to get ready, I was going on for the last half an hour. I remember being stood next to Darron Gibson, who was also coming on at the same time. I was so over the moon and I just started to think about it; I’m going to be playing in front of a massive crowd, shooting towards the Stretford End and in front of millions of fans watching on TV. Obviously it was nerve-wracking, but I quickly just tried to drown everything else out and focus on my game, concentrating on trying to play to the best of my ability.

Talk us through your goal, and your celebration…
[Laughs] I’ll talk you through the goal, but not the celebration! I remember Berba picked up the ball deep in midfield. I came short to drop off the defender and receive the pass. I knew the defender was coming up behind me – and I knew that it was [Ryan] Shawcross, who I’d played with in the youth team at United – so I played a one-two with Manucho and from then on I just hit it. I can’t describe it any other way, I just hit it. Why not take a shot in that situation? It’s your league debut and your team is already winning 3-0. So that’s what I did, I had nothing to lose and it just went straight into the top corner.

And what were the first-team lads like with you after that moment?
I was buzzing but they all just tried to keep me level-headed. That’s what they’ve always tried to do because I’ve not really done anything in my career yet, I’ve not achieved anything really. The players here are great because they’re always keen to give advice and pointers on how to improve as a player, and also how to live life off the pitch, which is an important part of being a professional.

Which players do you look up to most in the United squad?
I’ve always looked up to Ryan Giggs because he’s been my favourite player ever since I was growing up as a young kid. But there are so many great professionals at United that you’re spoilt for choice. There’s Giggsy, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes who’ve been here all their careers and know exactly what to say and when to say it. But there are loads of other players in the first-team that are willing to give you advice – Darren Fletcher has been a great influence on me, and Wes Brown has really helped me out, which is nice because we’re from the same part of Manchester. I have a lot to thank those players for and I’m always looking to learn more from them.

What are your ambitions this season – what do you personally hope to achieve in 2009/10?
I want to play more games, notch up a few more appearances in a United shirt and just show everyone what I can do, what I know I can do.

Manchester United check out Serie A stars Marek Hamsik and Stevan Jovetic

QUOTE
Manchester United scouts are believed to have run the rule over Serie A stars Marek Hamsik and Stevan Jovetic at the weekend.

Reports in Italy say the Barclays Premier League champions checked in on Napoli midfielder Marek Hamsik during his side's goalless draw against Udinese on Saturday.

And 19-year-old Montenegro striker Stevan Jovetic is said to have been the centre of their scout's attention during Sunday's match between Roma and Fiorentina.

Hamsik, 22, has been in their sights since playing for Brescia as a teenager, according to the Il Mattino newspaper, though they would face competition from Inter Milan and Juventus if they made a move for the goalscoring midfielder.

Jovetic is more of a star of the future and played for just half an hour as a second-half substitute during his side Fiorentina's 3-1 defeat in the Italian capital at the weekend.

Lyon and Bayern Munich have also tracked the player, who is under contract till 2013, while Chelsea reportedly enquired in the summer with a view to making a £15million offer.

United have a chance to look at him again on Wednesday when Fiorentina host Sampdoria.

Football transfer rumours – Marek Hamsik to Manchester United?

QUOTE
Double swoops, velcro, cash-plus-player deals, marzipan, last-ditch loan moves, the smell of freshly cut grass – the Mill knows what it likes. And so do managers. They like convenient stoppage time, until it doesn't suit them. They like players to fall over in the area, sometimes. They like to focus on the now, not dwell in the past. And they like talented young Slovakian midfielders.

Sir Alex Ferguson and Rafa Benítez like them so much that they are ready to strip to the waist and go mano-a-mano over Napoli's Marek Hamsik in January. Manchester United seem to have stolen a march on their rivals – a scout from Old Trafford, complete with woggle and his Talent Spotter badge, was spotted at the San Paolo Stadium on Saturday according to Naples local rag Il Mattino.

They hate us more than ever this year coz they expected us to crash & burn after CR7 left us but instead, we're winning big games. Totally a knock in the teeth for some fans. City is bitter coz they feel that they are as good as us.

Owen set to start in lucrative cup tie

QUOTE
Michael Owen poised to start against Wolves for Manchester United in the Carling Cup  – helping to trigger a £600,000 win or lose jackpot for the Molineux coffers.

Owen is in line for a start tomorrow night, after coming off the bench to grab the winner in Sunday’s see-saw 4-3 win against rivals City in the Manchester derby.

The presence of the England striker will spark further intrigue to a third round tie the holders are expecting a crowd of 60,000 for at Old Trafford, generating gate receipts of around £1.5million.

Under competition rules, each club banks 45 per cent each after VAT and expenses are taken off, with the other 10 per cent going to the Football League.

With both clubs also receiving a healthy sum from Sky for live screening on TV, Wolves will eclipse their entire budgeted income from cup competitions for the season in 90 minutes.

Chief executive Jez Moxey said: “It’s a really lucrative tie for us. Financially, it’s the draw of the round.

“It’s a really healthy financial boost for the club, but that’s not at the forefront of our minds.

“We want to go to Old Trafford, win the tie and get to the next round. We’d love to win the competition.”

Adult prices of £41 – Albion fans are paying just £10 for their tie against Arsenal at The Emirates tonight – combined with the live screening of the tie have meant Wolves have been slow to sell their larger-than-normal allocation of 5,708 seats.

But as Moxey explains, United feel they can justify the prices because of the huge demand to see even a below-strength Red Devils team play.

He said: “They think they’ll get 60,000 odd to the game at those prices. We plan for one home tie and one away, so it’s fair to say we’ll beat our cup budget this season before we even get to the FA Cup.”

Wolves will ring the changes with goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann, Ronald Zubar, Matt Hill, Dave Edwards, Michael Kightly, Stefan Maierhofer, along with former United pair David Jones and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, possibly featuring.

I'd love the lineup to be like this

Tomasz Kuszczak

GNeville Ferdinand Evans Fabio

Valencia Scholes Carrick Nani

Owen Berbatov

The reason i chose ferdinand is to get his touch back after sunday's mistake. Scholes, Nani and Carrick(90 minutes sub lol) didn't play against MC city too should be included tongue.gif

Apart from the Chelsea game and the City game, was he shaky? That's your answer..
*
To put things in perspective, he's finally getting his chance to play after some time in the wildnerness and i must say honestly VDS or some other senior keepers would've saved the fantastic shot from Arshavin from the MU vs Arsenal game. Having said that, his point blank save in the 2nd half with an immediate inspiring comeback did the job in the end. To be honest, he seems slightly shaky in the big games, but then again who doesn't. In the past my confidence over Ando and Fletcher also dipped greatly with the biggest fear they might turn into another Djemba-jemba as well. There was no clear winner on who's gonna replace the position of Keane and our ageing Scholes until now with an exception Scholes is back banging in the goals.

I believe strongly, there's no single keeper with safe hands anyway, we've seen among the greats The Great Dan himself who should've been crucified when he allowed a 3-3 draw with Liverpool, and he turned out to be just fine, in fact a legend in the making. There are no ways about this anyway, we'll just have to give him a chance and see how things goes. I for one sees Foster as a future successor to VDS anyway and as long he grasps the necessary experience and continuously improvising his techniques, he might turn out to be the first teamer english keeper we had from some time.

Well, if we've managed to get thru with the clownly Barthez, mr. conservative Caroll and mr. inconsistent Howard all well into their senior years, i'm sure we can hold on to our chairs and see Foster get thru as many games this season.

p.s. No pun intended tho.... but i do get deep adrenaline rush whenever the ball gets passed back to da Keeper and i know for some a mini stroke. We'll just gatta get used to it... haha

Q&A: Rafael and Fabio

QUOTE
After bursting onto the first-team scene last season, the 19-year-old da Silva twins are ready to challenge for United's full-back spots for the forseeable future...

Can you believe how far you’ve come in the last 12 months?
Rafael: It’s been fantastic to be involved with the first team and I think we both developed our games a lot last season. Our first six months at the club were very difficult because we weren’t able to play any matches [United had to wait for international clearance on the pair’s transfer from Brazil]...
Fabio: But when pre-season started last year we began to get the feeling that we might be involved with the first team which was very exciting. I didn’t have as good a season as I would have liked because of my [shoulder] injury, but this season has gone well so far and I feel like I’m developing very quickly.

Rafael, you played 28 games last season and picked up league and Club World Cup winners’ medals. That must have been a big thrill…
Rafael: It was fantastic. We were very close to winning the Champions League, of course, as well, and even though I missed the Carling Cup final through injury, I still feel like a champion because I played in every other game in the competition. I hope I can play my part in helping the team win even more trophies this season.

Fabio, having seen your brother do so well, did you feel any extra pressure when you made your first team debut in January?
Fabio: I didn’t feel extra pressure, but I knew I had to perform to my best. I was really happy that my brother had done so well and played some great football, and I wanted to be able to do the same. Seeing him do so well spurred me on and I was just pleased to eventually get my chance because being injured had been so frustrating.

Ironically, Rafael, you’ve had the same injury this season…
Rafael: [Smiles and shakes his head] Yes, as Fabio says it’s hard when you can’t play [because of injury]. He’s actually been playing at right-back so it looks like we’ll be competing for the same position when I’m fit again! [both laugh]
Fabio: Obviously we both want to play and it’s a little strange to be competing for the same position, but it also gives us a lot of pleasure to be challenging for a place in the team.

Did you always want to be footballers?
Rafael: Yes, since the age of four that’s all we dreamt of. Whenever I used to blow the candles out on my birthday cake my wish was always to become a footballer. We loved playing the game and, as youngsters, we were very strong runners. A guy called Zezinho, who was a coach of a local team, saw us and thought we both had potential.
Fabio: It was always our ambition to become as good a player as Roberto Carlos – he was our hero. He and Cafu are the best full-backs there have ever been. We watched a lot of football when we younger – we supported Botafogo, but we always used to be Manchester United whenever we played football games on the computer.

Fabio, you’ve shown your eye for goal in the Reserves and Rafael, few can forget your spectacular first strike for the Reds against Arsenal…
Rafael: When the ball went in, I didn’t really feel much because I was only interested in helping us get another goal to draw level. I couldn’t get my head round the fact I’d just scored against Arsenal! But afterwards a lot of people asked me about it and although I was disappointed we’d lost the game, I was delighted to have scored a great goal.
Fabio: I was watching the game at home on TV with my family and we were all jumping up and down when he scored, and my mum started crying because she was so happy. It’s always a great feeling to score – I’ve been happy to get a few goals for the Reserves and hopefully I can score some for the first team.

Describe each other as a player…
[Both pause and look at each other grinning]
Fabio: I’ll go first! He’s very aggressive, determined and he never gives up on anything. He always looks to do his best and help the team win at all costs.
Rafael: Despite the fact he plays mainly on the left wing, he has a good eye for goal. He’s aggressive as well and has very good technical ability.

Finally, what are your personal ambitions for this season?
Rafael: Just to help the team do well and play as many games as possible.
Fabio: We’re still young and are just trying to do the best we can. We have a great squad with some good young players and lots of experience. The young lads are always pushing the older ones and hopefully we’ll continue to get more chances.

Gibson relishes cup pressure

QUOTE
Darron Gibson has come a long way since his loan spell at Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2007, and he's determined to prove it on Wednesday as the Reds kick off the defence of the Carling Cup trophy.

The young Irish midfielder was an integral part of United's success in the competition last season, playing in every single match on the road to Wembley glory.

Although Sir Alex classes Gibson as more established squad member than untried youngster, the 21-year-old will be hoping the competition affords him his first start of the season.

"It's an important tournament for the young lads because it's where we get most of our first-team opportunities," Darron tells United Review. "We know we'll need to perform to our best because Wolves will bring a strong side."

Gibson earned his first winners' medal at senior level in the Carling Cup last year and he would dearly love to claim another this season.

"To win the Carling Cup again would be a huge acievement and it's what we want," he added. "Last season gave us a lot of confidence because we now know what it takes to win a major competition.

"There's always pressure at United, but there will be a bit more on us because we're defending the trophy and we're up against Premier League opposition."
