After two hours deciding on these three same model. I finally end up choosing samsung. I wanted to take the pana 42 inch plasma originally, but the salesperson in SenQ say he will be selling the display set since he claim its too hard to find the stock. I didn't bought his excuse, so I just pass off the offer and decided to choose Samsung over sony. The sony model was good and decent, and for that price....its very cheap compared to the other sony models, but I realised that samsung is the real player in the lcd market as they make their own lcd panel. I even heard that sony bought samsung panel but make its own body then pass the model as its own.

My personal opinion, looking at samsung leading the race in lcd tv (whats more with its new led tv), I know I made the better choice. Nonetheless, I do agree that panasonic has the better range of full hd plasma tvs with very appealing prices included. Its only the design that is a turn off.

Regarding the general difference between plasma and lcd, here is some point I learn:

1) astro sux on both. CRT tv pwns both model.
2) lcd reflect less and has a wider viewing angle than plasma.
3) movies looks better and natural on plasma. (by significant difference)
4) 3d movies and games looks better on lcd. (by slight difference)
5) plasma heats up slightly more than lcd.
6) plasma takes up more electricity than lcd.

I know the advantages seem to incline towards lcd, but when you compare plasma and lcd side by side, you know that the quality of pictures made a lot of difference. That is why I say plasma looks more natural and softer compared to lcd. But of course for movies that shows alot of 3d and games with bright colours, lcd wins hands down.

Thanks for the recommendation and thoughts there.

Hmmm.. im curious no one recommended Philips LCD TV.. their pricing looks very attractive, and the design pretty cool too.

Like PHILIPS PFL5609S for rm3499, any thoughts on that?..

Some points to note....

1) astro sux on both. CRT tv pwns both model.
If they ever made CRTs as big as the current plasmas and lcd, it would be the same problem

2) lcd reflect less and has a wider viewing angle than plasma.
lcds are less reflective (but not the newer higher end ones that have a glass surface) but plasma has a much wider viewing angle than lcd
3) movies looks better and natural on plasma. (by significant difference)
This is personal preference and it changes quite a bit with calibration
4) 3d movies and games looks better on lcd. (by slight difference)
This is personal preference and it depends on calibration
5) plasma heats up slightly more than lcd.
plasma generates more heat
6) plasma takes up more electricity than lcd.
This one is a toss up, calibrated settings are pretty close and it really depends on the type of movie, one technology has lower consumption when showing darker scenes, while the other has lower consumption when showing bright scenes when compared to each other

Very true. Funny thing is, plasma owners will definitely list out the pros in plasma while lcd owners will list out the good side of lcds.

Before I purchased my samsung lcd, I'm the over-the-fence spectator. Now that I've chosen a side, I guess my opinion is just as biased as the guy above me. tongue.gif

Its best to decide on your own....the rest of us are just sharing our 2 cent opinion on the matter.

I was not trying to be biased, the information that I gave is clearly documented. Especially your comment on the viewing angles that is inaccurate.

Yes, I realise anfield has a valid reputation as mr. expert in this field. I'll just assume everyone else has taken sides except him. Although I'm sure everyone would wish the lcd/plasma market players (sony, samsung, sharp, etc) would eventually make up a product that has the best of both world. I'm expecting oled technology to step up to the challenge, albeit a few years in the future.

For the moment, most of us are grateful that we can enjoy our tv screen with better luxury...one that we're previously exclusive for the rich only. Now that I'm a LCD owner, I'm always eyeballing plasma screens with envy. I'm sure it works both ways on the other side.

Why SenQ? 'Cause I'm staying in Tangkak and that's the closest I can have to a decent offer. sad.gif

Lol sony and samsung actually have a joint venture in producing LCD panels, and the company is called s-lcd. They both own 50/50 in shares for the company, with exception that samsung has extra 1 share while sony has less 1 share. But sony has stopped the joint venture if im not mistaken, and is now collaborating with sharp to produce panels.

And, surprise surpirse, Samsung do not use some of their own panels in their lower end models. They either use CMO or AUO supplied panels, same with Sony. CMO and AUO are one of the largest panel makers in the world, and they supply for many other companies besides sony and samsung.

Dont let the salesman that pushes samsung to fool you. Trust your eyes instead of them saying that Sony uses Samsung panels and because of that, the quality is low. The reason most of them do that is because Samsung pays better comission for sales than Sony tongue.gif

LOL laugh.gif

Viewing angle is a big, big thing for me. To me, there's not much point having a big TV if other people watching with me gets washed-out colours being too off center.

Problem with Plasma is the burn-in as I'm using it as a desktop replacement. Of course, I try to mitigate it by watching series episode/play games between web surfing.

Yea.. thats the thing.. its confusing at times.. which ones are better (LCD vs Plasma).. lol

actually is very subjective, some people like plasma and some like LCD

i like LCD for power savings and less heat

and i notice juddering in many plasma TV when i go to the shop and see, LCD TV seems like giving a clearer picture quality to me.
