11-Aug-2009 will be the ex-date for RM1.13 dividend for BAT....

These few days, BAT rally like a bull...... from its lowest point of 41.00 to 49.12 .......
what is going on????? smile.gif

Tobacco industry was shrunk with the new pictorial that warned everyone that smoking is bad for health....
and this year Oct, there might be an increase in the taxes...etc.....

Thus when would be the sell down for this counter.... hmm.gif

Ya...indeed very expensive..... previously before lot size change to 100 shares...
the lot size is 1000 shares...and at 49.00 that will be RM49,000 is almost a Myvi car.....

but nowadays, at least lot size 1 = 100 shares = RM4,900 similar to a new 110 cc motorbike.....

But.... i see that this BAT.... never jalan.... now... it run like a bull.... probably it is a short marathon run...only...
probably will back to square one...

Never Jalan is a wrong word to use on this stock, short term, may be.

I once bought this stock during 90's at Rm18.50. Now become Rm4x.xx, not yet count in around RM2-3 dividend each year.

But I don't have it now. Sold it with good profit after keep for sometime around RM25 or so (I forgot liao), may be at that time "too green" too short sighted, never realise or experience enough to know the long term benefit.

So if one kept this stock for years or decade, one is making good profit out of it, especially if accumulated 10+ year dividend alone, it should more than RM20 per share already, not yet on capital appreciation side.

My relative bought this stock last year, she is not damm rich, just ordinary working class people, she just bought 1 lot cost near 4K, she bought around Rm39 (roughly like that).

Don't tell me RM4k is not affordable for stock market kaki out there. No offence.

I don't see why cannot just buy 1 lot, you still invested 4K only, compared with buying 100 lots in 0.40 (which also 4K) some goreng stock never give dividend with poor fundamental which also 4K.

i think we used to buy penny stock, 1 time buy a few tenth or hundred thousands lots so feeling buying 1 lot seems to be a little weird.. smile.gif
but also can earn la..
your relative bought RM39, now around RM49, she already earn RM1000.
just that the profit margin not large, if she use the RM3900 to buy penny stock that moves UP, maybe she will get more than RM2000 in return, but there's a risk when buying penny stock

Haha, she bought it last year or so.

So if she used the 4K to buy those penny stock, high chance those 4K become 2K or less now.

A lot of people always think penny stock worth to bet on because a rise a few ten cents could mean severl ten % or 100 % rise. But how many people actually succeeding doing it? No offence.

Most either being burned or just earn a few then cabut already. Again no offence, just speaking out from experience and observation over the long term on most retail investor.

Penny stock also can go down one, not necessary must be up. In fact the risk of penny stock bursting is high though.

Don't mean penny stock is not worth, just things are not as simple as we taught. smile.gif

Risk is different in both case. She made Rm1,000 steadily without much worry or looking at stock market.

Profit margin around teen number in % pa. over the long term period, is considered a very good performance in stock market.

Cheers. smile.gif

i bought it on 2005 and sell it on 2008 and i kill my golden goose....... sad.gif

ya...penny stocks ...can eventually shrink easily 20%, 50% or even more...as this heavy weight or so called luxury stock will appreciate none stock.... still remember during 1997/98 crisis...i was thinking that BAT could gone down further, mana tau continuous to appreciate from 33.00 to 40.xx ........................................

and one thing for sure, since 2000 to 2008, the sin tax is increasing quite a porportional...
and i used to see dunhill price at RM2.00 during my school days......and now....RM9.00....
and i would foreseen, the next hike could be as much as 0.50 and ...it might hit RM10.00............
and probably become a burden......if the price hit RM20.00.....

about it dividend trends..... it pay 3.xx before... .and last year it is 2.65 and....
if i were to take 5 years dividend at average of 2.65... it would give you RM13.25 ....and minus...today price RM48.00, your purchase will be around RM34.75..................... but some time or always the time, when stock price appreciate, a lot of us, can not stand the temptation and always.....sell first...before regret later.....

I don;t think so ..... you know berkshire hathaway share listed in US, 1 share already USD 106400 thumbup.gif at today closing... furthermore you need to time 3.5 for conversion rate...to RM.

so i think ppl just see the share price, and this not see the total circulation of the shares... and the market cap....

bat never give our bonus issues, right issues, share split and thus the shares keep on appreciate.....
i was thinking why?????

I agree on the part of arguement too expensive to own one for ordinary investors on Berkshire Hathaway because 1 share already cost USD 100K already. icon_rolleyes.gif

But still its got class B share as well which at much lower price but still is a couple of thousand as well.

Make sure you do! BAT won't die in M'sia. The holding company in M'sia is very widely operated regionally. Unless BAT decides to delist itself, holding BAT stocks will be a good investment even for your kids!

looking at the bat historical announcement and reports, it seems like, no right offer, no bonus issues etc.... and so far also observed none of share buy back.... (probably i didn't find it)......... yet question back to recent hot news on privatization, ...will bat follow the same path....

????

i am wondering this coming 2010 budget reading, will there any hike in tax against tobacco products.... normally no news is a good news..... smile.gif

I notice that foreign big brands like Nestle, BAT, KFC etc don't really bother much about their shares on the bursa, they just run the operations like a well oiled machine year after year, and that's about it.

1 year probably 3 times
you can check in Bursa Malaysia web page, this coming 8 March 2011 will be given away 63 cents.... so for last year 2010 payout is 240 cents

BAT has increased along 2010 for its share price...and cigarette price for premium one also now at 10 already .....
so based on past trends, coming July if not mistaken normally will be another payout..................................

check this out.... number may be not accurate so you double check again their financial reports.....

thanks for your detailed information.

please tell me if my calculation is correct

assume I buy 1 lot @ 40 = RM4000

last year dividend 240 cents = 100 x 2.40 = RM 240

Hence the yield will be 240/4000 = 6%

am I right?

100 units of shares = 1 lot = the minimum number of shares you can buy at one time. Last time it was 1000 units = 1 lot

thanks for your detailed information.

please tell me if my calculation is correct

assume I buy 1 lot @ 40 = RM4000

last year dividend 240 cents = 100 x 2.40 = RM 240

Hence the yield will be 240/4000 = 6%

am I right?

I read every post in here, I like cherroy's post mentioning his cousin who bought BAT for 100 shares @ RM39.00

Very inspiring. I like it.

Just gotten my salary increment & promotion. So I'd like to reward myself with something which I have always wanted for.

Today I bought my first ever BAT shares. 100 shares @ RM46.04

Hoping I have more cash to buy second & third round in the coming days. Happy Investing!

JTINTER always pay little little, then one shot special dividend, so not predictable

British American Tobacco declares 78 sen dividend; 4Q profit lower at RM189.9m

British American Tobacco (Malaysia) Bhd’s net profit ended Dec 31, 2013 fell 3.9% to RM189.93mil from RM197.78mil a year ago.

In a Bursa Malaysia filing on Wednesday, the group said its revenue fell 0.04% to RM1.0934bil from RM1.0939bil a year ago while earnings per share for the quarter stood lower at 66.2 sen from 68.9 sen a year ago.

The group has declared a 78 sen dividend for the quarter.

For its full year, the group’s earnings rose 3.42% to RM825.77 mil from RM798.39mil a year ago.

Revenue was up 3.5% to RM4.517bil from RM4.364bil a year ago while earnings per share stood at 288.4 sen from 279.4 sen a year ago.

The group said its growth in profit was due to export volume increase and operating cost savings, whilst the domestic market income has been impacted by on-year volume decline.

“Following the steep increase in excise in September 2013, the 2014 outlook for domestic volume is a higher rate of decline than experienced in recent years,” it said.

The group said it remains cautious for the year ahead.

BAT Malaysia reverts to pre-Sept 8 prices for all cigarettes

Its Managing Director Stefano Clini said the move was for the tobacco player to remain “competitive”.

"Our last price increase (by RM1 per pack of 20s) was to alleviate mounting inflationary cost pressure amplified by progressive loss of legal domestic volumes over the years to illegal trade, decline in contract manufacturing volume, and an overall very competitive trade and distribution channels,” he said in a statement today.

“However, in order to remain competitive, we have decided to revert to our prices before Sept 8,” he added.

BAT reverts cigarette prices to pre-GST rclxms.gif

BAT Malaysia had earlier increased prices of all its cigarette brands by 50 sen in line with the implementation of the goods and services tax (GST).

Following the price revision, the price of a pack of 20s for Dunhill, Kent and Benson & Hedges will retail at RM 13.50 (from RM14).

The price of Peter Stuyvesant and Pall Mall brands is RM12 a pack (from RM12.50), while Lucky Strike Plain's range will sell at RM14 (from RM14.50).

Still has fundamentals.
Sales, fin, mktg, HR (MY and APAC) still around.
Dunhill one of best selling cig brand around.
They are moving up the value chain with retention of knowledge workers.
Divvy nothing to shout about but about on 52week low so can consider a good share to buy and hold.

Yup. That's why the market reacted negatively.
Coupled with volatility in FBM KLCI (again BAT is a constituent counter in the said index)

Political instability (Sarawak elections)

Forex volatility (HKD, JPY, USD)

It is like some match made in heaven today.

There is a lot factors to consider.

Few bigs questions that I can think of for now:
1. How much cost savings will they really get from their restructuring from the short to mid term (1 to 5 years)?
2. Is the shift to Indo for real (already in the pipeline) or merely a bluff (pokerface stunt)?
3. How will the gomen respond to the proposal of the 3 year moratorium on excise duty hike?
(Note: there is an indirect threat if you can read in between the lines from the MD's statement)

Proceeds from the disposal for the land should be decent since the last revaluation was quite some time ago. Not sure if they plan to distribute the entire amount to the shareholders or a portion of it and use the balance to pay of their borrowings.

http://www.thesundaily.my/news/1733635

http://www.thesundaily.my/news/1778199

Apart from the above, I think biz will continue on as usual. Just that the share price, dividends and results will continue to be shaky.

ETF.. 0829EA on Bursa. Solid China index. It's still up 15% for 1 year despite trade war, virus etc n just shy of 2% from peak in early Jan. Power of central bank liquidity I guess.

Back to BAT, as I mentioned elsewhere, I've exited to make some quick bucks, but it's still on my watch list. See again this week. Final results should be out.

Off topic but this ETF has pretty high expense fees right? Low liquidity (sell at loss to get out) and high transaction cost (buy and sell) too.

Strong rebound by BAT. 14+ now.

Results came out, horrible 2019, as expected. But last Q was not too bad. The share price was so horribly bashed, that so so results are good enough

With or without the current political turnoil, BAT stock has risen up significantly and people are going all "hype" out on the stock. However, I believe that would still be the current impact of illicit cigarettes on BAT market. My question is can it really go far as long as illicit cigarettes are not being tackled yet?

Based on actual facts that I know:

- 6 out of 10 cigarettes consumed in Malaysia is illicit as proven from the news as as well.

- The research house has a hold call on BAT, and slashed its price target on the share from RM19.20 to RM11.50 previously

- Illicit market doubled since the surge in excise duty in 2015 (33.5% in 2015 vs 63% in 2019)

A very summarized version on why my skepticism remains even though the growth is showing. Feel free to correct me as I would like to know more feedback from your side as well.

the future of the stock price rest on 3 scenario:

1. Market share of illicit ciggrettes continue to rise. (by how much? it can't be 100%!)

2. Market share of illicit cigarettes stabilize at current levels

3. Market share of illicit cigarettes reduce.

When the stock came into my radar early this year, it was trading slightly above 15 n I thought it was starting to look attractive even under a scenario 2 situation with a scenario 1 being the downside and scenario 3 being the upside. So when price collapsed a further 20+%,, I bought as there was sufficient margin of safety.

Yes that's my whole point. Is it wise to purchase long term? Definitely not as long as illicit cigarettes are still around!

Perhaps (33.5% in 2015 vs 63% in 2019)

The Malaysian Government must be held accountable and radical actions such as demand-driven solutions that include a review of excise duties must be explored

High tax is often counter productive. To increase tax revenue from ciggies and alcohol; besides lowering duty and tax, anti smuggling need also to improve.

Latest news including BAT:
