i need help... i got a hamster (got it from my sis today, my sis has been keeping her for few months) it doesn't seem to drink water and it has been a day... is it okay to leave her like that or do i have to do something about it?
*
hi ndrw90, nice to hear from you, oh ya dont panic , calm down a while, can i know which breed of hamster your sister give the hammy to you? and wht kind of cage / bedding is given to your hamster too.? hope can get more detail from you so that is easy to pin point the situation,

regarding ur situation, maybe your hamster abit stress out due to the sudden change of environment and owner too, give your hamster some good ventilation room ,quiet place and sufficient food and water, is very important. So that the hamster can take some times to get used to his own new environment and owner too . And make sure dont put near the windows with direct sun heat, as this will cause heat stroke to the hamster.

Oh ya keep on eyes with ur hamster, as long he is running actively , and run non stop at the wheel, there shouldnt be much worry, as sometime hamster drinks , is a sudden action , maybe we are not there 24 hours to supervise them, that y just seeing them didnt drink any water.

but if you see ur hamster is not active, breathing heavily, and act funny, pls take note a while, maybe is the stress that may lead to wet tail situation. Hope to hear from you time to time. cheers thumbup.gif

can this be used on my syrian hamster?
*
yup a 21cm medium silent wheel, is suitable for syrian, for me ill go fr the largest silent wheel, who knows may come in handy sometimes, but it has to depends on ur size of cage too. icon_rolleyes.gif

i don't think she is allergy toward those shaving coz she live fine for 2 months++ already... furthermore, it's a non-perfume type
*
sry for late reply, yup wood shaving is cheap, but not so favorable to hamster. but sometime due to cost and budjet is understandable, well most of the hamster owner here use wood shaving too. those rm7 per pack . nothing wrong. but if want a much prefer 1 can opt to mix and match different kind of bedding, is good for the hamster ^^

well for that by feeding carrot, is that the only food is been feeding to the hamster? or still got others hamster food too ,hope can mix and match the food , like using vitakrat and subsequent day some fresh food or vege, or fruit. a smal portion 1. ^^

i think ur hamster abit of stress due to the new environment, see his condition for 3 or 4 days like this. thumbup.gif to make sure he is ok with it ^^

oh ya 1 last thing, guppy tank is it the plastic 1? the small size guppy tank? if got picture to see much better thumbup.gif hamster prefer more room to roam around too, if got the cash to provide them as to close to nature , they love to roam around. And judging from the furry G force type, should either be syrian hamster or winter white , can see their characteristic at the front of the post to make sure wht breed is it. wub.gif

i'm only using what is available at the moment... i don't mind spending money to let her live longer... i'm feeding her with carrot and mix nuts and hamster supplement... yeah, a plastic guppy tank... i do have a big cage for her, but she keep on climbing to the top and jump down for nothing... it looks fun but i fear she will hurt herself, that's why i keep her in a tank instead

Added on December 12, 2010, 11:39 pmwill it be possible if i leave that hamster with my hedgehog in the same case?
*
yooo you guys really late into the night, lol . is good if u mix the carrot with others hamster food too, just to enrich their intake, and regarding they love to climb around the cage wire, is normal, mine every night will become spider hamster climb all over the cage and fell down too. to minize the impact i put a thick bedding for them, so that it wont hurt much once they falls, and is usually fall for no reason hahahah.

i much better to seperate hamster n headgehog , as both is different animal n breed.

lol I'm suspecting my male robro is a gay @@ He barely notice the female inside and the female is always cleaning for him haha. almost half year and they still not breeding.

and wanna ask is feeding apple a good choice? read it somewhere, apple have vitamins and water that is needed.
*
hahah, candlenie, is your robo is gay, mine even gayness. 2 of my robo male n 2 of my female robo, staying together, and till now didnt see any mating happen or any litters from them, as i know robo breeding is abit special, some is easy some is hard or some even wont.

as they have season to mate, maybe early of next year when the start of spring season, rclxms.gif im looking forward to next year too. finger cross, well who knows, whether they mate or not, i still cares n love them much hehehe

apple wise, abit portion wont do much harm, but dont too much . as the sucrose in apple is high in concentration can lead to hamster diabetic. so if you feed the apple make sure is seedless too. cheers thumbup.gif

bread or oatmeals, can be feed to our hamster, but dont put too much also. a small portion will do, once they finish on refill. well all this grains is their favourate natural food. nod.gif

*
hahah late night is the new trend a, really well say hehehe. but sadly i cant too late, if not tmr morning ill be like zombie. lol dont place a bowl of water, is not advisable. a bottle is much prefer, cause the bowl of water will cause the fur of hamster to get wet n the bedding around the water will get wet too, if ventilation is not good will attract bacteria or others diseases to grow over the place. why not u put the bottle inside, and squize out some water on ur finger and let ur hamster lick it, at least she know there is where the water come from. but hv to be patient ^^

Actually i got some question to ask about my robo.. Last time when we brought him at pet shop we just but him a packets of kuaci onlt cause we thought it's the main foods for hamster but after reading thru then i realize that kuaci actually very bad for hamster.. No wonder my hamster getting chuby & fatter. I quickly call my bf & yes he said my hammy can eat 6-7 kuaci per day de.. Oh my.. is it really very unhealthy?

What foods actually suit for my little hamtari? & he very active at night de.. Running on the wheel.. Run here & there but during day he always sleep & very seldom run on the wheel de.. is it normal?
*
too much kuaci is really not that good for hamster, this info you also gotten it, try to reduce the intake of kuaci for hamster, the best hamster food is a balance diet for hamster that the best hamster food we all seek. if dont want too hassel is vitakraft formulate hamster diet. consider 1 of the favourable.

is normal for hamster to be active on night, mine also like tht . they will sleep till 12am then awake n will be busy running here n there d. hahaha. that how hamster act , is normal ^^ no worry about it thumbup.gif

i got one question also....i toilet train my hamster already...he knows that is the place to pee....but sometimes he go & sleep in there  rclxub.gif  y ah? he like the smell is it  hmm.gif ? anyway to stop him from sleeping in there?
*
that is 1 great achievement you have there, as hamster take time to learn where to pee at a certain place, mine all end up in the sand bath, imagine the sand just stick on the bowl hahaha.... well sleeping in the pee place, maybe he find the place comfortable for their rest or nap, that possibility. for smell i dont think they bother much, as the cage we hv for them, they also pee around, n the scent stay with them, so they get used to it. but i bet ur hamster just sleep a while at there n change place right. for me i got put 1 house for them to sleep whenever they feel like it. is a small matter no worry ^^ thumbup.gif

hahah ya they love to sleep every where n every place. =D that common , and eating up the poo cause the poo sometime hv some undigested food, so they think is the food we give them too. yup that normal.

as long they are healthy n provide a clean environment, they hardly fall sick, as hamster is rodent animal. very tough i can say to fall sick, unless we didnt give them a clean environment that will cause their sickness. and most of them just get old and pass away peacefully~~~

Hahahaha..she sleeps with them inside..sigh..my Bei Bei ar..very funny de la..LOL..

But she's super cute wan..everyday her routine is:

1) Wake up
2) Stretch and yawn
3) Go out of the house
4) Pee at her spot (after pee her body will shiver also wan like us humans!! LOL!! Shows satisfaction ar..haha)
5) Look at you and climb to the door wanna come out
6) Climb on my hand and explore wherever i put her
7) Play d dont wanna go back cage (put her in she will faster run the opposite direction wan..omg..hahaha)

Normally this happens in the early mornings or after midnight..hahaha.. =P

waa ur bei bei acting really sipek cute wub.gif , seeing ur description now my mind is thinking how ur bei bei acting, and i cant stop giggle with her style biggrin.gif , really 1 of the unique hamster i would say.
Well guys if you notice, hamster actually once used to the environment, they wont simply pee around the cage, mostly is just 1 special spot for them to pee, either at the end of corner or some other comfy place. Where u will find the bedding is wet. mostly hamster is like tht icon_idea.gif

When I woke him up, his right eye doesnt seem to be open. His left eye is open, but not fully. Nonetheless, I can still see the "black" of the eye, but his right eye is fully closed. Only after awhile, does his right eye opens.

Should I be worry bout this?
*
hmm regarding ur description, doesnt seem like anything wrong with it, as long both eyes can open in the end, maybe ur hammy feeling abit lazyness or manja manja? since u go and wake him up from his wonderfull dream? heheheeh , just a wild guess hmm.gif but got some fact with it hehehe icon_rolleyes.gif .

lol my hamster yawn also. mouth so big @@

btw how to train them sand bath...i use different container cause the cage cant fit, and when i put them thr all they do is trying to jump out =="
*
haha finally u saw ur hamster yawn leh, and got notice their razor sharp front teeth? if they didnt grind from time to time, u will feel geli with the sharp teeth they have. heheh scary leh if kena bite, sure we will jump up of shock.

regarding ur sand bath training, must have lots of patient, find a container that got some room and can fit the hamster, as long got space to move around is much prefer. oh ya dont force a hamster to do something that they dont understand or dont like, cause mostly u will end up in frustration, thinking why my little fella not going to use sand bath.

share some experience with u, put the sand bath over there, and pick up some sand bath sand n drop on their fur. then they will try to shake the sand off, try do it from time to time, and once they know it, thy will automatically run towards it. for all my hamster, once i put the sand bath, omg.. all rush in it to roll over hahaha damn funny to see them sometime. Dont worry much candlenie they will figure it out, cause is their nature instinct . thumbup.gif

Haha..i totally agree with you Jxplod..

They really know where to pee and will only do so there..wasted my Robos arent like that..they shit and pee everywhere!! And really a lot..hahaha..they drink a lot of water too compared to Bei Bei..hahaha..

I everyday feed them broccoli now..dont want them to always eat processed food nia although is good cause its Vitakraft..hahaha..and their shit turned light green also..LOL..

One thing i noticed though..Bei Bei very picky eater..she would ignore the green triangle and round pellets from the Vitakraft Menu..She would take EVERYTHING from the bowl except those!! Really super picky!! Really clean of other food de..omg..hahaha..

But my Robos eat everything i gave them so i will pick out what Bei Bei doesnt eat and give my Robos..hahaha..no wastage at all..LOL..

P/s: I really wanna get my own room..sigh..still waiting.. =(
*
haha yup most of the hamster will avoid the pellet, mine also, but sometime when the food is limit, they will eat that also but slowly, once get used to it they will finish all up before new food is provide to them, well guys just keep in mind the food have to be change max at 3 days, to keep it fresh thumbup.gif

hey guys. My hamster's acting all strange now. And I was shocked to see her left eye closed and it looks a lil bit swollen. What happened actually? =(
*
Hi Dnmak, regarding ur situation can list it in more details, like ur hamster age, the bedding you use, n food also.

this detail can help to further understand wht ur hamster have been through, although my advice is not going to be 100% accurate, but ill try my best to help u out a while through experience and some material reading that lead to urs situation.

Age of hamster is crucial as this may be the sign that our hammy is aging, and its immune system didnt function well that may lead to infection. or reaching the dying age, sound sad but tht life cycle is got life and end. hope you understand.

2nd is the bedding, if you hamster is a young / adult hammy, bedding can lead to eye injury or the dust particle that may irritate theirs eyes also, which you can see swelling or even reddish , worst come to worst is bleed and lead to blindness. so bedding material play a major role in such situation. if ur hammy find the bedding not suitable, try to search for other bedding, but some bedding may cost alot also like corn bedding / cat litters/ which is expensive but is a good bedding for hamster too. high absorbent, or those small circle wood bedding is good too.

3rd less possibility food allergy, or the food not suit the hamster. just a less possibility for this

4th is any fight happen within the hamster , sometime may lead too injury. that y with many hamster , is much better to provide more spacious for them to roam around and reduce intra competing.

Well finally the best is bring the hamster to a VET to diagnose the problem, well they are the animal care doctor that tend to such situation, mostly will prescribe antibiotic to help the hamster to recover and some eyes drops solution too. If you see ur hamster situation not good, is best to bring the hamster to see the doc asap, well medical fee for animal is costly too, put into though after seeking doctor advice, is it cure-able or the last option is to put to sleep, that we try to avoid as all hamster owner too.

Hope from time to time can hear ur update too. take care n merry chirstmas too thumbup.gif to u n ur hammy

Her left eye is slightly pinkish. My hamster's quite picky about her food, just sunflower seeds among the usual hamster foods available in stores. The hamster has never been involved in any fights cuz its the only one in the cage. My parents are advising me to put the hamster to sleep,I'm not ready to do that yet =( The hamster is a year old 8 months.
*
oh a year old n 8 month d. icic , yup try to avoid to put to sleep , tht the last last option we going for, the best is natural death is much prefer. due to my religious teaching, although sometime with complication towards the pet we love, we just walk through with them till their last breath.

seeing this , i still advise u to bring to the vet , to see is there any alternative to help your hammy n c. at least they are the expert to deal with infection. wink.gif

Recently i notice my hammies pass water quite often.. Not very much water juz quite often only.. Is this normal? I notice he getting chubby also.. Don't know it's a good things anot cause he very less run on the wheel don't know izzit b cos he too fat to run o what.. I'm worry about his health..  unsure.gif

Also my bf planning to bring his hammies back his hometown at penang by KTM Train. Is it ok if a hamster travel on a train for about 6-7 hours? What do & don't should i know so that my hammies won't be so stress out?
*
oh drinking much is ok, but if u see he drink too much may lead to diebetics worry also. so just monitor their situation, my ww drink alot also, but is healthy running around but the bedding is soak with pee very fast, so have to change once or twice a weeks depends on situation. hehehe

for bringing bk home town, hmmm for hamster to travel shouldn't be a problem, as long you put in a comfy cage, not too big n not too small, just nice is the best for the little fella, but when travel 1 weeks, i just put full the food bowl n change the water bottle also, once i come back they are still happy running around n healthy, sometime will great me too once i add new fresh food. well is depends on us how to manage it. as long in the cage is much advisable. ktm train make the cage u can put into a plastic bag so that is wont be too obvious for the operator to stop u. thumbup.gif

hahaha hamster is always sleep, and active at night, google have lots of opinion , but to carry around like shopping , is really not advisable. not like puppy we can bring them together, so if travel from kl to pg, or other place 1 shot . is ok no worry thumbup.gif

hohohoh dont put in paper bag lo,a shoes box with rigid surrounding better, as u know sometime we panic or too crowded. later the hamster get squeeze in it~ as rigid wall can absorb the pressure and have a good environment temperature for them also , not too hot.

Hello hamster lovers,

I'm actually interested in hamster. Especially the Syrian's Long Haired ones.. I never handled hamster before so I'm kinda new to this hobby.

I just wanna ask you guys about the Syrian's Long Haired Hamster. What do you feed it with? I see too many choices there so I'm kinda confused on what to choose.

If there's someone willing to explain me a bit in caring, feeding and handling this hamster, I gladly appreciate it smile.gif

Thanks everyone!

Welcome to the hammy family!! if u need some help feel free to inform us, giving our best to share the knowledge with u, dont worry much about food, if possible get vitakraft or liviing world combination of hamster food, is the most balance diet so far in the market. giving fresh food like vege n fruits, you can check the front 1st post for hamster food, tht info is sufficient also. a small portion is much more prefer. Hope u find ur long hair soon, cant wait to see ur picture!!

haha syrian is mostly like tht, love to bite the wire , to grind their front teeth, also due to the chemical compound, smth to do with zinc or iron. so far i notice if syrian keep together at young age is ok, as 1 of my local pet shop do like tht, so no fighting or wht so ever, as they still young not territory yet. ^^
