Drian:
music CDs and vcd only have stereo channels, so unless your dvd player can mix the channels you only get 2.0 sounds. and to get 5.1 u need dvd with 5.1 audio. this is not the speaker's problem, its the dvd player. mind to tell the brand and model? |

hehe.. just buy my first edifier R501MK?? .... nice speaker.. can compete with logitech z 5300, but lose out to aego 2.

I did some testing with stereo source (music cd), assuming all cables are connected properly, the subwoofer did have sound.
Does your player has 5.1CH analog output like in this picture?  |

is my onboard sound good enuff to pump a 5.1 channel maybe R501 MKII speaker ? (Realtek ALC850 8CH audio CODEC)

Also the bass that you hear might come from the front speaker. I don't think they filter off the low frequency component from the front speaker.
