QUOTE(MetalZone @ Oct 22 2009, 02:10 AM) Since two of our members had their macbook pro's stolen recently, and questions arising on whether we could track out stolen macs, I thought it'd repost my answer to that thread here: hey i plan to give orbicule's undercover a try. was the purchasing complicated for you bro?If you're looking for some sort of tracking... the answer is Orbicule's Undercover. Their website explains everything: http://www.orbicule.com/undercover/ give it a read. I got this for my 13" MBP the moment i got it. But for maximum protection, it doesn't stop there. I enabled the firmware protection, which requires a password to enter the boot menu so you can't reformat or even boot from a different partition. I don't know what happens if you change the hard disk though but I think it won't even allow the new hard disk to be used? I enabled the option in the security preference pane to "request password 5 mins after sleep or screen saver begins". Of course that means u should have a login password. Since the Undercover software works by tracking the user while online, I need to enable the thief to be able to use my mac. So I enable fast user switching and created another Standard Account (NOT admin) for the thief to use which doesn't have a login password. I also locked down my personal folders/home folder and can only be accessed by me. So in the event my mac gets stolen, the thief has no choice but to use the Standard Account I created and can do pretty much any basic thing except anything that requires admin access. He can't access my folders but he can use every bit of the remaining available space for his own use. Then hopefully, in due time, I will be able to track that bugger down. And hopefully he/she ain't a tech geek. any positive/negative feedback? |

QUOTE(jasperng @ Oct 22 2009, 06:06 AM) =/ if I hadnt bbought my mbp. I would have go for this new macbook pro +_+ since it also has multi touch. Well you don't get the aluminum/magnesium composite construction like in the Pro line which means less rigidity. Of course the plastic unibody is an upgrade from the previous plastic casing. Plus it doesn't get the 'fruity' screen like in the Pro line. This screen is dimmer. It gives me a feeling that the entry level MBP 13 may have been priced too aggressively. RM4499 for the entry level is just 'distracting' hehehehehe! The plastic one is nice, if you don't need the firewire, sd slot and other luxuries.Im curious why apple made this decision to include multi touch to mac book. wouldnt this lower the sale of mbp ? I always though multi touch is something only mbp should have in order to differentiate it from normal mac book. sigh -.- now I dont feel good after paying extra 1500++ just for better processor, SD slot and firewire slot. |

Wow..with a new design of Macbook, i really hard to choose between MacBook or Macbook Pro 13'. seem like almost the spec is the same, only aluminium case and firewire.

Just look at the very basic of things.
MacBook and MacBook Pro. MacBook Pro sounds more professional, and sophisticated. |

QUOTE(Kernkraft400 @ Oct 22 2009, 03:30 PM) Just look at the very basic of things. Hahaha ya... sounds more Pro. But when I see that the new plastic MacBook also have the same built-in long time battery, this can't be it. It makes me feel that the Pro is more of a gimmick. So now... the Pro only provides the following luxuries:MacBook and MacBook Pro. MacBook Pro sounds more professional, and sophisticated. 1. Aluminum/magnesium composite unibody construction 2. Frameless glass screen 3. Wide gamut LCD screen 4. Extra ports Apple seriously need to upgrade the MacBook Pro 13 entry level soon. Wait... does it signals something? |

MBPs have been using C2D for quite some time.
Whether or not Apple will make another refresh for MBP is depending on Intel. Intel should be releasing arrandale processors along with clarkdale next year, on the 3rd of January. So we'll be probably seeing new MBPs by January or February. I am waiting for it >.<" |

Just switched from a PC to a Mac user
Somehow, after I got my mbp, I stopped using my desktop(which is windows xp) except for gaming. I'm slowly switching to mbp Everything is still running perfectly fine for now. But I was wondering, will the performance slowly fade away from time to time? Or will it maintain its awesomeness(smooth, reliability etc) |

QUOTE(Kyoshiro @ Oct 22 2009, 05:39 PM) MBPs have been using C2D for quite some time. Seeing what happened with the line of iMacs, I guess the best they can do is offer Core i5 on the top end. Intel Core i7 could be reserved for Mac Pros. So if we apply this trend on the next refresh of MacBook Pros, I guess the entry levels and mid levels would get a speed bump but still using the current generation Core 2 Duo. The highest end namely the MacBook Pro 17 may get a Core i5. Whether or not Apple will make another refresh for MBP is depending on Intel. Intel should be releasing arrandale processors along with clarkdale next year, on the 3rd of January. So we'll be probably seeing new MBPs by January or February. I am waiting for it >.<" I just don't see the Core i5/i7 line of processors fit for general audience yet with its current price levels. And isn't it weird that Apple now has a next generation processor (Core i5) based on the Nvidia chipset? I thought Nvidia is hitting a roadblock with the licensing dispute? Or maybe its not using an Nvidia chipset? I'm really anxious to see what new chipset Apple will be using for its MacBook Pros. Still stuck with Nvidia 9400M or something new? Will it still support next generation Intel processors with the current licensing dispute? |

@SheepMekk,
You haf nothing to worry about *smiles* @Kernkraft400, U don't haf to keep telling people that U just got an MBP and don't want Apple to update their products. If Apple don't keep coming up with new re-engineered products, how then do u think they're going to be doing so well in their profits?! |

QUOTE(tinkerbel @ Oct 22 2009, 11:01 PM) @Kernkraft400, They should really further advance themselves in the sales of softwares, balanced with the sales of hardwares. I am quite shock with the fact that, most of their softwares that are available out there, arent provided with key algorithms to determine the authenticity of the product sold. Rather, anyone could upload them on a torrent site, and others would leech their brilliant softwares without actions taken from Apple. Same goes with the iPhone apps.U don't haf to keep telling people that U just got an MBP and don't want Apple to update their products. If it's vibration, then it's from the HDD. I'm afraid there's not much that you can do about that. You could try swapping out for another HDD that vibrates less. Either that, or SSD drives.
If it is static, use the long extension cable instead of the short plug to your power adapter to ground the static. |
