QUOTE(hildagarde @ Oct 2 2009, 06:26 PM) I'm currently hunting for Macbooks and i happened to bump into this 1st gen Macbook Air 1.6ghz at the garage sales selling @ 2.8k. I found it cheap and is now considering. I'm a graphics designer and I used Photoshop and Illustrator heavily so now my question is, can the 1.6ghz spec be able to handle such heavy tasks Well, it'll probably just barely do the job. But if I were you, I would be looking at the MB/MBP instead. Few things to consider... Is 120GB sufficient for your portable use? 2GB will be laggy when you are processing multiple files and multtasking And the lack of USB ports just doesn't seem very usable for your work.

With the i7 processors already out on some machines, its really hard to tell when the MBPs would be updated. If I was in the market to buy one now, I would probably wait.
But then again, by the time the MBPs have i7 processors, the unibody MBPs would be "mid-cycle" and then you think you might wanna wait for the next major update. So its really up to you!

It does sound like a faulty HDD. It is not that uncommon to have faulty HDD on new machines. Good thing is its a relatively easy fix, hope you didn't lose any data on it.

You won't be able to claim warranty on it. It's going to be obvious from the stain marks that you had liquid on the machine. Unless, you have accidental insurance of some kind, you're pretty much on your own on this one.

Take a look... http://www.macinstruct.com/node/74If you manually manage your songs, then it's just a simply drag and drop operation.

I had an experiment a while back in which I used a slab of ice at the bottom of the MB for cooling. It worked quite well dropping the idle temp to 26 degrees of so. Obviously, this is not a long term solution.
I have the Zalman NC1000 cooler. At most, it drops the idle temperature by 1-3 degrees. What it does well is prevent heat fluctuations (visiting Flash sites) as the internal fans does not come on as frequent with the cooler. This was on the white plastic MBs so your mileage may vary wit the unibody MBs.

If it's vibration, then it's from the HDD. I'm afraid there's not much that you can do about that. You could try swapping out for another HDD that vibrates less. Either that, or SSD drives.
If it is static, use the long extension cable instead of the short plug to your power adapter to ground the static.

Indexing means that the operating system is creating a catalog of all the files on your HDD. Think of it as a map that locates all the files on your system.
Indexing enable you to get the superquick Spotlight search results. Once indexing is complete, your machine will be running as usual as you may notice slight slowdowns during indexing.

Well official Windows 7 support will come by the "end of the year" according to Apple. I've ran the Beta earlier this year and didn't encounter any problems using the current drivers.

Sounds like it could be because the HDD head is parking due to movement.

The alum remote still uses IR and would work with Macs and accessories with an IR port.
Makes me wonder, which reseller and where?

QUOTE(raist86 @ Feb 3 2010, 12:15 PM) Guys, am planning to get a 13" mbp soon for work. I know there are 2 specs on the market, one is a 2.26ghz and the other is a 2.53ghz model. Other differences are the ram and hdd size. question i have is, is it worth to splurge the extra RM 1100 for the faster proc, extra 2gb ram and slightly bigger hdd size? I already have a fast pc for my heavy duty work stuff (photo, video and sound editing) and i need a laptop for more portable work when i meet clients. Can i upgrade the ram and hdd myself if i get the 2.26ghz model? I would get the base line MBP. Since you don't really need the faster processor, you'll be better off saving the RM1100 and doing some upgrades yourself. RAM and HDD is user replaceable. You should configure your Mac with 4GB of RAM (additional RM359) from the Apple store since buying outside would cost almost the same. The HDD is really expensive from the online store, hence you should replace this yourself. Lowyat sells the 500GB drive for RM270. 2.26Ghz + 4gb + 500gb = RM5138 You'll save about RM500.

a) The update of the MBPs is just a matter of time. If you really have to change your machine now, I guess that doesn't leave you with much options.
b) The older models will be sold at a discount. As for the newer models, its hard to say but Apple, in the past, has retained the price or offer the newer models at a lower price.
c) Yes, students do get discounts.
d) store.apple.com/sg store.apple.com/my

You'll need the Mini Display Port to VGA convertor.
A normal DVI to VGA convertor won't work because the DVI out only carries a digital signal.

The charger is dual voltage. You just need to get the socket adapter.

What temperature is it running at?
Look for iStat, the temperature widget if you don't have one.
