I've said this a lot of times and I'll say it again.
You cannot compare the Nokia N97 to the iPhone (whatever the series may be), simply because they are different. Phones like the Nokia N97, WinMo or even Android devices are smartphones. They are as close as you can get to a mobile computer.
iPhone, on the other hand, love it or hate it, it's NOT a smartphone. A lot of people might disagree, but how can the iPhone be a smartphone when it doesn't even perform the must fundamental function of a smartphone, which is to multitask?
Nokia N97 is targeted to the tech-savvy masses; whereas the iPhone is for a very niche market - the Apple fanboys. If you love Apple, you'll love the iPhone. If you love tech, you'll love the N97.
I won't tell you the advantages of the N97 over the iPhone because I can go on for another 10 paragraphs, but I can tell you what basic functions the iPhone 3GS does not have that even my 3 year-old N95 can outfunction it:
- No multitasking
- No file transfer over Bluetooth
- No Java support
- No LED for camera
- Which doesn't really matter because the camera is rubbish
- No hactic feedback on the touchscreen
- No proximity sensor
- No shutter key for the camera
- No stereo speakers, only mono
- No file manager
- No DIVX support
- The battery is shit
Stop comparing the iPhone to smartphones already. I think its competitors should be the Samsung Jet and LG Arena.
I'm not saying that the iPhone is inferior, but it's just different. I appreciate all the technology iPhone introduced to the mobile phone market, but drawing comparisons with the flagship device of the N-series is just out of line. N97 (Sedan) vs iPhone 3GS (2-door coupe). It's quite a silly comparison when they target to different users (tech-savvy and fashion-savvy).
I must say i agreed with all the points above, but i wanted to point out a few opinion and fact that i've seen myself too.
Having big multitasking is a big no, for me, because i'd like to have my GPS, MSN Messenger and web browser open at the same time. Not one after another. However, i've seen it a friend's phone of mine (Iphone 2G) which he apparently h@cked and installed a third party program called "Backgrounder" that allows program to run in the background. So indirectly, multitasking. It runs pretty smoothly though. I wonder why apple doesnt want to natively support multitasking.
Web browsing experience is much better on iphone primariy because they are much smoother, and also the existence of multi touch technology which allow easy zoom/unzooming of a website. However, they will struggle when trying to open a full flash based website, while N97 is having much less trouble dealing with website requiring java and heavy flash content. I have my friend's Iphone 3.0 and my N97 side by side. Accessing the same website (full flash content) but his browser couldn't display anything at all. Mine is displaying everything correctly, but with very minor glitch where certain flash button could not be pressed. Mind you, a N97 can access a full computer version of youtube perfectly where iphone is depending on a special software develop to access youtube since they can't do it directly from the browser.
Also, i believe it's the haptic (i hope you dont mind the spelling correction) feedback you are talking about. However, having a capacitive screen means every button that you touch with your finger is a 100% hit. There won't be any chance for the button press to be miss, therefore there is no need to haptic. The haptic is in a form of mini vibration to let you know that you have indeed pressed a button which is very useful in on a resistive screen where you might accidently place too little pressure on a button and end up not pressing a button u wanted. I have the haptic thingy switched off because i i think it's draining the battery very quickly though. I have no problem pressing those button.
Again, when talking about iphone and n97, tech spec aside, people will tends to compared between its touchscreen technology. Capacitive(iphone) vs Resistive(n97). Initially, when i first use i phone, i must say i love their capacitive screen as i dont have to place any pressure on my finger to press those button on the screen. However, after getting a n97 and using it for a while, i found that i'm liking resistive screen more and more. Why? It's because i have tendency to use my fingernail to press the button since it feels more natural and accurate that way. I also liked the handwriting recognition which again, by using finger nail.
This cannot be achieved with iphone because no matter how hard you press using a nail (or in fact, anything other than your skin), the screen wont register a button press. The only catch is that, you must apply very very small pressure because this is what detected by a resistive screen; pressure.
So, for you guys button press using 1. SKIN ONLY with no pressure needed or 2. ANY MATERIAL including skin but with very slight pressure needed. Which would you choose? Personally i would choose 2 because i use about almost everything to draw on my screen.
