i'm doing a new enclosure. a full planted one.

i'm experimenting with the potting soil. want to see if it is good for the moss and the grass. u know just to give a natural feel to it. but a big drawback is

you have to put the enclosure in the sun everyday if not the plants will die but it put a risk to your scorpions dying because of the heat.

so i'm planing to use it at exhibition only. if there are any in sibu.

since we are on the discussion of mites how about if we do it in a scientific way.

first is where does the mites comes from?
what are the factors contributing to the mites infestation, humidity, availability of food, from outside(for wc specimens), type of substrate, temperature that are involved, amount of scorpion(for communal setups), etc, etc, etc.

preventing the mites to infest is the way to go compared to treating the problem after it have gotten out of hand.

glad to report that my WC scorpions have no mites on them after a close inspection that is done once in a blue moon.

my only problem is ants and flies.

I wish2 learn more bout mites in the future
Let me know if anyone encounter mites again
Scrap some of them and send it to me
Going to conduct an experiment, perhaps culturing them too smile.gif

QUOTE(Izzulogy @ Jul 24 2009, 02:44 PM)
i found another way to get rid of mites.. well, this is from what ive read, like to see what u guys think of it..

mites can be suffocated with a very small drop of glycerin or fingernail polish. great care must be taken to avoid getting the substance on the scorpion's chelicerae and spiracles.

and mites reproduce on moist substrate, not on the scorpion, the eggs hatch, find a host, feed, drop off, and breed, lay eggs and the cycles continues...

Great info!

update on scorpling seperation day 5:

another 3 died. 1 was actually dead for sometime already but i didn;t notice it.

so left only 5.

update on mother giving birth day 4:

the mother is in the hide and occasionally comes out for a drink in the water dish. gave a slightly killed meal worm and she ate it.

Sry for the death, hope the rest can make it through

QUOTE(Izzulogy @ Jul 24 2009, 03:30 PM)
yeah, using strong chemical really needs very great care.. its risky and look like even harder than the common method of using vaseline and change to tissue sub~ lol (but if really know how to do it, maybe very2 easier! just put little drop of glycerine or fingernail polish and all mites suffocate~)

im trying to find some large scale breeders to ask on this matter.. who knows, they might haf some personal tricks that doesnt in the book~

I bet your gf is jealous now that she don't excite you as much as before Lester. If you're getting more than 10 Hottentotta judaicus, go for a large communal setup! They make excellent display animals judaicus.

Goodluck keeping the 5 remaining scorplings alive akagi.
