But I have to admit that the LEDsamsung LCD is indeed beautiful. The picture quality is amazing.

I think I have to wait 1 more month until my trip back home and hopefully by then the 50S10 will be readily available everywhere.

Panasonic would sell in volumes if price drops to RM4999. It is a psychological thing, most Malaysians think that, other than cars and houses, anything above RM5000 is a big commitment.

Thus, once it touches RM5000, people won't think twice and just grab one.

Bros,

After months of researching and stare-ing for hours at LCD/Plasma TV. Last weekend was in the mood to buy the Panasonic THP50S. Cheapest I have found is the shop opposite Carrefour Kepong, same road as the stand alone KFC Kepong. I think the shop's name was Wing Heng or Weng Hing or something. Just go over to Kepong and check it yourself and look for the Boss name Peter.

Anyways, the price for the Panny THP50S is RM5300/- rclxms.gif

Was almost putting down my money on it but needed to check Desa Home Theatre Kepong as my final destination to check prices after went everywhere lah.

In the end I ended up with a Philips LCD Full HD 52inch PFL5403 clearing stock brand new for Rm 6299 with 3 year warranty and 1 year insurance.

Have compared the Panny 50X vs Panny 50S vs Philips 52 PFL5403 vs Samsung 52 8 series vs Sony 52 W series

The glare on the Panny 50X was ridiculously terrible , the Panny 50S is better at least half less glare but still glaring.(Best for evening /night /darker room viewing) Still value for money.

The philips in the other hand was equal on Astro and better than the panny when HD content was played hence I purchase it with great expectation and in addition no glare. Again I'm the type of person who has 5X1 Terrabyte external hard drive of HD Movie etc contents and my living room has a lot of windows.

The Samsung and Sony is a lil bit bitter by around 15% when fast movement was involve but their prices are well over RM8K.

The PFL5403 is a phasing out model and going to be replaced by the 5409s. Original Price for the 52" 5403 Philips was Over RM10,000++ last year with 1 year warranty.

Give the Philips 52PFL5403 a consideration and demo before purchasing the Panny 50S. Its the mid level model, 2 inch bigger than the panny and seriously flares better in HD content plus its a LCD. The downside thing is, its RM999 more expensive, Philips branding and advertising is not as strong in M'sia(Not glamor) and you will raise some eyebrows on people who thinks they know all about buying a plasma/LCD. Its just like buying an Audi... laugh.gif At least we dont see about re-sale value here...

If you're the type who watch Astro more, go ahead buy the panny 50S with confidence.
Either way, for now the Panny 50s Plasma and the Philips 52PFL5403 is the best value for Plasma and LCD.

Word of advice, please insist for the shop to bring out the stock from their store and write down the serial number of the particular unit they bring out after you check the box. On the invoice as well record down the serial number. With that at least you know that a particular unit is available for you before delivery. At least you also feel better that they would not give you the unit on their showroom wall or do a "Legend" on you thumbup.gif

So far no luck getting the 50S10 yet.  Non of the shop carry them yet.  SenQ salesman say they will not carry it because 50" full HD plasma is not popular and tv above Rm5000 is not hot seller!  Then he try to sell me the more expensive LED samsung tv....what kind of bullshit is he trying to tell me!

Lightning69,

Dont fall into their tricks bro, Typical Miri-ian Sales man... They will try to sumpit you, then chop your head like a headhunter, cincang you and lastly roast you while drinking tuak to close you and for you to fork out your hard earnned the money.

Any chance you have a 4X4? Always can go over to Brunei to Kuala Belait to buy your 50" Tv. Mayb its cheaper you'll never know.

I miss Miri mee merah la wei... Anyways, how's your AV getting along??? not going to upgrade from your CHT12R to a SVS PC12NSD or Plus? drool.gif

Will complement the New Philips with the PC12NSD sub once it has arrive in KEC Sg. I will be driving over to Singapore to smuggle the sub back to KL end of Aug. I hear last Sunday with SVS Ron was good. Read about it here: http://www.xtremeplace.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=64111.195

Hi. Very good write up and comparison between those TVs. Really informative and helpful for those looking for a new TV. Btw, how did you do the comparison between those TVs? Is it a side by side comparison with the same source? Just asking because its pretty interesting to see someone choosing an LCD over a plasma TV as plasma usually gives better picture due to better blacks and color. I think the latest pana plasma is a bit disappointing due to the poor anti-reflective coating and also the in-accurate color reported by many reviewers.

I don't have a 4x4 but i do have a mpv and i did check out the price of pana in brunei and i think they are more expensive than Miri.

I actually want to add one piece of advise, do not make your decision on the picture quality based on showroom floor. If possible, some showrooms have dedicated lower lit rooms, they are more representive of your living room.

I do agree with you that most showroom are pretty bright, but from what I see there is really no escape from reflection even in our homes especially living room as most living room are bright and most living room wall are white color too. That is the biggest drawback of plasma tv as the reflection can take away all the benefits of a plasma screen like deep blacks becomes white wall and even seeing yourself on the screen!

Yes, especially if you watch movies in high ambient lighting environment, this is a drawback.

However, I watch Astro in a normal living room environment, I do not see major issues with this when viewing content.

I was checking out this Philips LCD model too at Best denki . The price is not far different from Pana 50S10K .

However my wife didn't like it . They were playing some movies ( Terminator Salvation & Pink Panther 2 ) at that time and it looks like we were watching a documentary or something . Got to agree with her on that too . It didn't feel like we are watching a real movie at all even though the picture quality and colour contrast were superb .

Finally decided to take the Panny instead biggrin.gif

Anyway bro, I am a person who believes in different people having different preference / taste . So believe that you have made a good choice in getting the Philips LCD coz its very a good model and reasonably priced too thumbup.gif

I have seen the Samsung LED backlights as well, look good. I would like to test it in a house to see how it holds black levels.

Lightning,

For the past 4 months while saving up hard earned cash and eating Maggie mee almost every day,
I have been to over 20 places like all the Harvey in central, Best, Onking, Legend, HSL, Jusco & other shops and warehouse sales where they display the Plasma & LCD Tvs. And yes some of the places do have side by side comparison and experience firsthand on different condition of lights and requested the shop to put in 3 types of source. Astro/Normal DVD/HD content… Condition was in nice comfy showrooms til to under the tent at a warehouse sale.

Don’t get me wrong, the panny is fantastic if your source is mainly astro and for movies with standard definition under low light condition. When it comes to HD source, the Philips was one level up, astro & black contrast is at par with the Panny. The only thing is the Panasonic on standard definition is better if you buy a standard RM8 DVD from your nearest Ah Siong DVD seller.

To sum up for an typical Malaysian from my own point of view after staring for hours at Plasma & LCD :

Go for the Panasonic VIERA TH-P50S10K if you:

1) Have a collection of RM8 (KL/SEL), RM4(Penang), RM5 (JB) pirated DVD movies
2) Have a dark room or watch mostly in the evening or at night
3) Have a budget of only RM5000 +/-
4) Are a Panasonic fan and you feel that Panasonic is a proven brand from your own other Panasonic appliances experience .

Go for the Philips 52” LCD 5403 if you:

1) Love something bigger
2) Hates refection regardless room is brighter or darker
3) Have Blue-ray, HD source collection / Gamer PS3 or from computer source (No burn in effect)
4) Have Rm1K additional budget from the Panny
5) Don’t mind on last year model but cheaper buy at least 40%

Overall its how you use your TV and budget.

Good luck thumbup.gif

Maybe the air in the east is different, or placebo effect since you stare too long on those TVs. rclxub.gif

Weird because I have the money, I have 100 original blu-ray titles and almost 15TB of mkv, I love watching movies even though it is in the morning or afternoon during weekends and in the end I choose S10 over the Philips. Did I also mention that the black level on S10 is better than that Philips - thus resulting in better PQ. I also have a kid at home, I choose plasma because of the hard coated and solid surface. I notice reflection on LCD too, just because of the matte finish doesn't meant it wont' have reflection.

By the way, I'm an ex St. Joseph school /  Pujut 1 Boy  thumbup.gif

you guys from Miri arr , use to go there sometime , nice and peaceful city and nice food there too . the ngau chap mee is nice so is the char kwe teow at old pasar .
good choice on philips 52'' 5403 at that price with 3 yrs warranty . i was actually hoping 52'' 9703 or 7403 prices to fall soon and then grap . one thing good about philips is that its power consumption are lower compare to other brand of similar screen size

on longer terms , saving on maintenance counts especially on big size screen and more so since TNB gonna increase its tariffs
