Apple Store Australia now sells iPhone 3G S outright without any form of contract and unlocked directly from the box! This means that you can use any form of supported foreign SIM cards (for example our local Maxis, Celcom, DiGi et cetera with these iPhone 3G S, without the need of software and hardware unlocking.

please take some time off, to carefully read the following information. they are being stipulated for a good reason.

premium resellers (for example Next byte) are NOT apple (stand alone) retail stores. only apple retail stores carry the outright (and unlocked) iPhone 3G S versions. there are only FIVE apple retail stores in australia and they are:
1. chadstone VIC, chadstone
2. chatswood NSW, chatswood chase
3. doncaster VIC, doncaster
4. robina, QLD, robina
5. sydney NSW, sydney

the prices for 16GB and 32GB are AUD879 and AUD1040 respectively. if you are planning to leave australia within 30 days, you can then proceed to claim the GST (by dividing the total amount of the purchase by 11).

the only form of payment accepted for these purchases is solely based on credit cards and the online store currently does not support such outright transactions. it is also important to note that, each person can only purchase a maximum of five units. two units per day. and as of now, you will need to present a form of identification to purchase an iPhone (for example a passport) (as of 14/07/09)

for example, if i were to purchase a vodafone bound 16GB iPhone 3G S and had it unlocked online, the total price will be (AUD929 * 10/11) + AUD50 = AUD894.54

and with another example, in which i wish to purchase the 32GB iPhone 3G S outright (and unlocked unit) from the apple store, the total price will be AUD1040 * 10/11 = AUD945.45

Unlocking your iPhone from the provider

there are some assumptions to be made here. i'm currently holding an optus bound prepaid iPhone 3G S, however the process across other networks should be the same (as they involve passing your IMEI to apple nevertheless). for further detailed information, you should always refer to your network provider's respective website.

there two scenarios here; where you didn't receive the text message, asking you to restore the iPhone (to be discussed shortly) and vice versa

1. You did receive the text message (most likely scenario)
(a) Make your first phone call and make sure it gets connected. As in, you actually have a quick chat with the other party (on the other line). No specifics on the duration (it could be 2 seconds long, et cetera)
(b) Ring up your provider (most network has a dedicated team handling iPhone related issues and hence it is imperative to dig up for that number)
© Hand over your IMEI number when requested (this can be found on the box et cetera)
(d) Wait for this text message

(e) You must restore your iPhone via iTunes (an extremely vital step!)

Are you getting one bro? Most of my friends cannot wait till Friday lol. Well, I wish I could take the plan but since my visa is expiring, they wont allow me to take the 2-years contract. I really hope Optus sell outright iphone but sadly they don't since they are pretty much charging nothing to unlock except for the long waiting period. I just want to see what Vodafone and Telstra can offer and I might ended up buying outright telstra phone anyway+ 150 freaking expensive unlocking fee.
Do you think 3 will also sell iphone this time? Since vodafone and 3 already megred, i hope that is a possibility as most of the 3 phones are sold outright and can be unlocked with a minimal fee.

true, Optus is good in term of the plan offered but then if only I still have one year left in my visa lol. Anyway, just wanna add tethering is supported by Optus for 9.99 access fee per month and then u can choose between 2GB or 6GB for 24.99 or 44.99 respectively.
the 9.99 charge only be waived for customer with 99 timeless plan.

out of topic tho, I really hope they can open an apple store here in WA. It is about time so that I dont have to wait for 2 weeks to get my iphone fixed.

Cool! I'll head up to Optus shop tomorrow to find out. Hopefully I can sell my current Iphone and use it to pay the excess months. But 'sayangla' since my Iphone is just 3 months old (replacement unit) but again probably could fetch a higher price selling my 3G. I just read the plan all over again and find out the 59 plan is good enough for me since I dont really use tethering and don't really download data directly to iphone. But I think Optus should have just waived the AUD9.99 fee for all plans, they made a lot of money already lol.

That AUD$9.99 is like a license to tether hehehe! But yeah, its a drag. You've paid for the data anyway so if you tether, you're most likely using whatever you've paid again. Also, tethering on laptop consumes more data than on iPhone. Meaning more data used, more pay paid. They win too!

3 is getting the iPhones, has been announced. Am waiting for them to officially start selling it at the beginning of July. Just hope I dont have to pay so much to exit my current contract, else I might not get the 3GS.

just like the 3G version, there were so much rumours that '3' will carry it and it turns out to be some hocus pocus.

their plans look good but i got fren encounter many prob with them..1 of it is overcharge.
like he using $29cap but when bill comes,it show more than $29 coz of over usage.but he nvr make many calls.2 hands also can count how many calls he have made in 1 month
n same goes to broadband..sign up for 3gb n nvr download any things.just normal use.n got keep track the usage but when bill comes,need to pay around $200 coz exceed usage.call them to clarify but they keep direct the call to other departments but end up nth can do about it..occur 2 times de

i have to leave aussie in about 6 months. don't know if its worth upgrading or not. tempted tho. only wish 3 would offer it. as usual got talks around the internet speculating that all mobile providers have obtained is since 3 and vodafone merged and technically vodafone has the contract with apple.

At the moment, it's not comparable because Maxis has yet to release its pricing for the iPhone 3GS. However, from the last release, I believe it wouldn't be much difference; unless of course U sign up with a plan via Maxis.

For the eligibility, it depends on the visa. Let say if you are on 9 months visa (I dont think there is a vsia with 9 months period but assuming there is), you can apply for 12 months plan but you need to pay the remainder of the contract months that you dont have the visa for. Let say you take the 49 cap for iphone 3gs 16 gig, u need to pay AUD 49 for the phone usage (calls, text etc) plus AUD 49 for the phone so total AUD98 per month. You have 3 months that you are not covered for so u need to pay upfront AUD294 and then pay the rest with AUD98 monthly.

So for 12 months, you will be getting the phone for AUD588 ~RM1650and spend AUD588 for your calls, texts etc (provided u will not exceed the plan). All together you will spend AUD1176 ~ RM3300 over a year

For comparison with Maxis, let say Maxis will maintain the price (which I doubt so) for 16 gb and you choose iValue 155 plan and u take the 12 months contract.
Youll end up paying RM2160 for the phone and RM1285 for the calls, texts etc (provided u wil not exceed the plan). So total you pay over a year is RM 3445.
But, this is using the old iphone 3g plan. Im pretty sure that this number will be higher by at least RM300-Rm400 price for the new Iphone 3GS.

Overall, it is definitely cheaper to buy the iPhone in OZ but the only downside of buying iPhone oversea is the warranty only works in the country of purchase.
You also need to think about unlocking your phone if you buy it here. Optus will give u for free, Telstra will charge you freakin AUD150 while Virgin and Vodafone will charge around AUD40-AUD80 depending on the contract length.

i guess if u wan international call then i believe 3 is the only choice for u since they included international call in their cap..
if optus then u need sign up for another extra international pack which is $5,$10 n $15..b4 tht i sign up for $5 but then i cancel de coz i got skype..
n i can use my gf's 3 to make international call if i wan since she not rly use much

You know what will be great? If 3 release iPhone with free Skype like their Skype phone. You can directly call through skype without using your download data. Lot of my friends use skype phone and they never exceed the skype minutes even on 39 cap

well those were rumours, but this time its out on their front page and the customer care people have confirmed it when i spoke with them over the phone. its also reported in the news. previously, of course there were lots of hoo haa, but there was nothing official about it. definitely agree with you that they will probably have one of the best deals.

three's coverage aint the best, but they definitely have improved on it. when you first sign-up with three you should be aware that your first bill is charged on a pro-rata basis. its all in the fine print.

to me, '3' has the "bad" impression on me (just like those typical prom night flashbacks... adui!), carried forward from my years in the uk.

back then, '3' is really bad (central london coverage is terrible and rumour has it, that '3' didn't sign up an agreement with celcom. which explains why malaysian students on '3' couldn't send text messages to the celcom network and that lasted for quite a while)

it also actually painful to see how they scoop/degrade themselves so lowly. my senior actually got a contract with a free nokia phone (after taking into consideration the monthly cashbacks) for only 9 pounds/month with abundant of minutes. of course, for those who love a bargain (albeit the bad service) wouldn't complain much.

but of course, the '3' in oz and HK (for obvious reasons) are nothing like that.

But yeah it surprises me as Telstra used to be the last one to commit when iPhone 3G came into OZ market last year and I think they are more prepared this time around. on an educated note, telstra has the right to charge extortionately (in all aspects) because it is the dominant player in oz and can provide undisputed coverage and quality. their 3G speed can make you go crap in your pants; what optus/virgin can do, telstra can do it in half.

oh by the way, there is something in which i can add.

should a network, decide to sell the iPhone 3G S outright/prepaid, you are entitled to claim 10% off for the GST at the airport (provided the date of purchase is less than 30 days before the date of departure from oz)

but if it is on a contract, then i reckon it is a no go as you need a proof of purchase for such reimbursements.


easy. extremely straightforward.

go find a malaysian student who is extremely home sick (or has a boyfriend/girlfriend back home). these people will kill for minutes to call home. they won't give a tiny rat arse about these stupid/silly iPhones.

and i'm not fabricating this up as i have seen such cases.

the receipt will be in a complete mess i reckon. they will need to issue a few receipts like termination fee, handset price, contract payments et cetera.

just make sure the receipt is over 300 then u can claim and u must buy the iPhone i think 7 days (or is it 10 days) prior departure. If u comply with that, I dont think you'll have any problem even on student visa. ( i myself on student visa)

if i get the vodafone 32g from australia. I will get $350 worth of talk time. Is it possible to transfer/sell it to other people like how we transfer credit in malaysia? if it's possible it will be damn awesome. i will bring back alot of units

erm... if you are from oz, you will know that $350 is actually "pretend money" and not actually real money. that "pretend money" has no significant value.

The $ is in terms of air time value. Also, if you're only going to be in Australia for 1 month, I don't think U'll be entitled to sign on a plan.

if we unlock vodafone iphone officially by paying aud50, it will be a one-and-only-procedure-for-lifetime, or we have to do it everytime we restore/upgrade the firmware?

It's a 1 time fee but the unlock process may take a couple of days, sometimes week.

technically you can.

but there is a possibility, the website unlocking may not go through and you might have to resort to, patronising the standalone store for rectification.

looks like i need gif up for this iphone 3gs since i need pay full for remaining months for my contract

n i got mail from optus tht i can waive 20% off for current plan if wan upgrade to new iphone 3gs but still is a lot money for me to upgrade
this is message i got..i just quoted some of the contents


"We know you are only part way through your 24 month plan so because you pre-registered for iPhone info we're offering you the chance to upgrade to the new Apple iPhone 3G S and we will discount 20% off your early upgrade fees from your current mobile plan when you take up a new 24 month iPhone plan.† "

Assuming unlock within 6 months via online, this costs 75. Price of prepaid is 1129. So total is 1204

So i guess it is still better to get from Optus (Cap 19 12 months contract) for a total cost of 1140 (where unlock is free).
