Burning Questions: The 10 Most Confusing Things in 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen'

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" made over $200 million last week. What it didn't make, however, was one lick of sense.

Now, suspension of disbelief is usually not a problem for me. Tell me that a billionaire could put on a bat suit and swoop around fighting crime and I'll buy it. Or that a different billionaire could build flying armor in his basement. Or that in the future people will beam onto spaceships with their pointy-eared best friend. I'll accept all of it. I'll even take your word for it that a mechanized alien race can come to our planet, scan some cars, and turn themselves into vehicles.

That being said, there were moments in this new "Transformers" movie that were so confusing, so contradictory, or so corny that they completely took me out of the movie. Even days after watching it, some new inconsistency or plot hole would pop into my mind.

I can hear it already: "It's a popcorn movie. It's based on a bunch of toys. It's just supposed to be fun." And yes, all of those things are true. But that doesn't mean I can't ask questions about what in the world was going on. Here are the ten that I most want answered. (WARNING: contains spoilers).

1. In "Transformers," there was this giant battle in the middle of downtown Los Angeles -- excuse me, Mission City -- that was witnessed by thousands of people at the very least. But somehow the government was able to cover up the whole thing, and now the existence of alien robots is just an internet rumor? How did they do it? Pay off everyone who was there and quickly fix millions of dollars in damage? Also, didn't Keller (Jon Voight) go on TV and tell everyone we were being attacked by "a technological civilization far superior to our own"? How did they spin that?

Shia LaBeouf 2. There are two pieces of the Allspark cube left: the military has one under lock and key, and Sam discovers another. The Decepticons steal one and bring Megatron back to life. But when Sam (Shia LaBeouf) wants to bring back Optimus, he has to find the Matrix of Leadership on the other side of the globe. Why not use the other piece? Mikaela (Megan Fox) has it in her backpack the whole time. It brought his kitchen appliances to life, why can't it do the same for Optimus?

3. Speaking of Megatron's rebirth, when the Decepticons venture deep into the ocean to revive him, the Navy crew tracking them reads five contacts. When they get down there, they tear apart one of the robots for parts to rebuild Megatron. Then as they rise to the surface, the same Navy guys say they spot six contacts. The little "Doctor" robot popped out down there, but he's about a third of the size of a person. Would he have shown up on sonar?

Shia LaBeouf 4. That reminds me: even if I were to forgive the Doctor's German accent -- and director Michael Bay is asking me to forgive a lot of ridiculous accents -- why would a robot need glasses? He has little lenses that flip in front of his mechanical eyes. Couldn't he just get his eyes adjusted? You'd think with all the laser guns, someone could perform a Lasik procedure.

5. Apparently, Transformers can look like people now. How? And how is it that even though the robo-girl (Isabel Lucas) is made of metal, she can still straddle Sam without crushing him. And if Bumblebee knows something's wrong with her, why does he spit antifreeze at her instead of telling Sam? Yes, his voicebox is broken, but wasn't it fixed at the end of the last movie?

Megan Fox 6. The Fallen is the last of the Primes, since they all sacrificed themselves to stop him from destroying the sun. But then he says that Optimus is a descendant of the Primes. First, Transformers have kids? And second, how could he descend from them if they were all dead? And if the Fallen could only be destroyed by a Prime, why didn't the originals just gang up on him back in the day? And what makes Optimus so special, anyway? Megatron beat him earlier, but all it takes is a few spare parts from creaky old Jetfire for him to take out the Fallen?

7. Sam, Mikaela, and Simmons (John Turturro) go to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C. to find Jetfire. Then they walk out the back onto a wide open field with old planes and mountains in the distance. When did the National Mall start to look so much like to Tucson, AZ (where they really filmed that scene)?

Megan Fox 8. The geography is just as bad when they go to Egypt. The stone city of Petra in Jordan is over 250 miles away, over mountainous terrain, with few paved roads and the Israeli border between them, so how can they drive from one to the other in a couple of hours. And the Pyramids are said to be shooting distance from the Mediterranean, but they are actually well over 80 miles inland. Even if the Navy ship had a secret rail gun, and even if the captain would take an order to fire from a former agent of a government branch that no longer exists (over a walkie-talkie that inexplicably starts working again), how could it hit a moving target from that distance?

9. Sam briefly dies and goes to Robot Heaven. Robot Heaven?!?!

Megan Fox 10. Where does Sam's bandage come from? What about his extra sock? Why does Sam's roommate not contribute anything at all? What was the Fallen doing for those thousands of years Megatron was frozen in ice? How does one satellite receive transmissions from everywhere on the planet? Why does Wheelie hump Mikaela's leg? Why do we have to see John Turturro's thong? Why are robots who join together to become Devastator also seen fighting the Army at the same time? Why does the government want only our military fighting Decepticons when our weapons seem unable to make so much as a dent on any of them? Why did the ancient Egyptians build a pyramid around the sun-destroying machines instead of just breaking it? Why is the Matrix of Leadership bigger in the Fallen's hand than in Sam's? And how do Mikaela's pants stay so clean?

#1 Keller wasn't on the news and said that, he was addressing the government agencies.

#2 Sam and them did not know it brought Megatron back.

5 In the tie ins and novels the girl is actaully a Disneyland animatronic, that Leo (the roommate) Saw on TV and went to tell Sam. That is why he rushed into the room and said "Hey Sam your little bed buddy is AWWW!" he screamed when he saw the robo tounge of doom

6 Yes Transformers can have descendants, it was in the comics.

7 I don't know

8 The Transformers are super advanced aliens and can move faster than average cars. And a Railgun is rediculously fast, it could be fired from the Moon and hit a moving plane on Earth

9. His mind was a repository for all of the Allsparks knowledge, giving him a link to the Primes Sparks.

10 I will answer these later.

1.Only people that were there would believe it that it was real, to everyone else it would be just like any other viral campaign or conspiracy theory.

2.Sam's piece was used to revive Jetfire.

3.Megatron did not swim down to revive himself, but he did swim up after having been revived.

4.Even someone with 20/20 vision benefits from magnification at some point, his model just didn't have electronic zoom being as it was a microscope.

5.Looks like the explanation was cut from the film. You have no idea how much she weighed though, nor do you know that Bumble Bee has the ability to identify Transformers, if you'll notice the Twins did not know they were surrounded by Constructicons later in the film.

6.We don't know what makes a Prime a Prime, this is classic example of nit picking based on evidence-less preconception. The Fallen was Centuries old, Optimus was young and suped up.

7.Although, there is no airplane graveyard at any of them, their are three branches of the Smithsonian Air and Space museum, it was a leap, just like "Mission City" having one next to a graveyard.

8.Geography is regularly flubbed in movie, but this one seems like a legit issue, but the shooting of Devastator is not, he was not a moving target, he was posted up on top of a pyramid when he was shot with a mythical gun.

9.He was revived by the Matrix, he talked to the Primes whose memory was preserved in it.

10.The room mate did contribute, he is how Sam met up with Turturro's character. The rest are just stupid whiny bullshit.

1. People laugh about the FEMA coffins and Northwoods. You think the entire world is supposed to believe a martian robot attack on a single city with no more occurrences and the one politician who said something on live TV. That's why he isn't Secretary of Defense anymore. He was clearly suffering from some severe mental illness forcing him to resign. As for the damage, that was some Muslim terrorist cell... get the hint.

2. Like several have pointed out, it was used to revive Jetfire.

3. They take a leg from the expendable bot, much to his surprise it seemed, but that would hardly kill him. Starscream is seen at one point in the movie carrying his own severed arm and reattaching it onscreen just for reference.

4. As far as the accents involving ALL of the Transformers, in the first one, Prime said they downloaded our language from the internet. As sentient beings, they would most likely adopt vocalizations pleasing to them. As for the lenses, I suspect them to be allowing him to change visible spectrum's most likely, though it be a seemingly inefficient way.

5. In regards to her looking human, this may just be a [frick] you from Bay himself for all the griping about the robots not looking human enough in part one. I think Bumble Bee was more disgusted by the thought of Sam cheating on Mikaela, not that he sensed a Decepticon.

6. In the comics there were 13 Primes created by Primus to protect the universe from his evil twin Unicron. The Fallen betrayed his creator and became an Acolyte of Unicron. The movie said there were only 5(or 6 I can't remember exactly) but I remember in the animated movie that Prime passed on his role and title as a Prime when he died. Though the Matrix of Leadership was used to do so in this instance. Also, when Primus created the Primes and the first transformers, he gave them his Matrix, in the comics, which served the same purpose. Wasn't addressed in the movie, but wasn't ruled out.

7. Never been to any of the Smithsonian branches. No comment.

8. Geography is a bit off I give you that, but in regards to a the Railgun taking out Devastator... that is perfectly pheasable and totally within the realm of our reality. Railguns use massive amounts of electricity, 30+ Megajoules actually, to create intensely strong magnetic fields to propel a non explosive conductive metal slug, typically aluminum. This slug waighs about 8 lbs and immediately reaches mach 8 upon leaving the rails. The shear velocity allows for an enormous flight time with pinpoint accuracy and could easily hit targets 220 miles away... if you'd google the world 'railgun' you would know this.

9. Your assuming there is a 'Heaven' of any sort to begin with, this is another instance of reactive conditioning, you see afterlife, you think heaven. In the books, Unicron and Primus could enter the Astral Plane, as well as a few Primes. Sam had an out of body experience.

10. His under-shirt. He stole his roomies. He leads Sam to Simmons. Searching for Megatron and the Allspark, duh. It was a U.S. military defense satellite. Wouldn't you? To remind you not to wear one. Multiple pre-scanned Transformers, like in the books. Cause our our government is retarded(yea I said it). LMAO, you just stated even modern tech barely hurts the Decepticons, I guess the Egyptians could have asked the Sun-god to help them with it, but that would be too showy. It reformed from dust, what more do you want. She sprayed them with Pam!

Most of these questions are ridiculous.

1. "How did they do it?" What the f***? They did it. It is not important to explain it in every little detail.

2. I was under the impression that the shard was lost when it was used to restart Jetfire, but I could be wrong.

3. Maybe the doctor did show up on sonar? I don't see why that is so unbelievable.

4. The doctor was a microscope. Microscopes have lenses. What's the most logical place for them to go?

5. Really, crushing him? That's what passes as plot question?

6. The transformers are a race of beings; why wouldn't they have offspring?

7. In the words of Ari Gold, "Really? REALLLLY!?"

8. See number seven.

9. Human heaven?

10. His sock might not be extra; he could be wearing on shoe sockless (I can't believe I'm having to explain this.) His bandage? Watch damn near ANY movie; everyone walks into the desert or jungle or whatever with no hat, water, or supplies. And yet they survive. Give me a break.


I feel dumber for engaging in this, but I guess that's my fault.

Here's my question. Since when did movie "critics" become the biggest morons on the planet?

Its expected performance is over 5.8 km/s muzzle velocity, accurate enough to hit a 5 meter target from 200 nautical miles (370 km) away while shooting at 10 shots per minute. It is expected to be ready in 2020 to 2025

In War Within, Autobots Elder (Gravitias) give Optimus a golden disk contain the date/secrets of the matrix but what bugs me is if Megatron wants the matrix, why he hasn't take from Sentinel Prime since he ripped it out out him?

FYI in IDW verse, Sentinel Prime in Megatron Origins doesn't carry the matrix with him and do believe that Nova Prime is carrying the matrix when first expansion begins...

Reality Check: “Transformers 2″ Is Not Racist


Much has already been said elsewhere about the so-called “racist” robots from the recently released “Transformers” sequel, claiming the characters Mudflap and Skids are poor and offensive caricatures of African Americans and black culture in general - everything from the voice acting to the “gold tooth” to their facial features is being used as evidence for these arguments. However, there are a few problems with this:

Who ever said they were supposed to be black characters?
One of the two voice actors responsible for the robots’ personalities is black.
It’s not racist.
Let’s assume, for simplicity of argument, that both voice actors were told to portray this kind of character, with the intent of producing a “ghetto” robot, and they both obviously agreed to participate. Does the studio asking them to create such characters constitute racism? Or even some sort of one-sided stereotyping? I would argue no, and the reasons are quite clear.

First, look at any number of accepted pieces in the media: The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, most of Eddie Murphy’s work, and anything Tyler Perry has ever sketched an outline for on a napkin. Do they not include generalizations and stereotypes? If so, does the race of the characters’ creator somehow alter the offensiveness? Stereotypes prevail in media regardless of race - Everybody Loves Raymond and Will Ferrell movies will easily prove this as true for those who happen to be white.

Second, how can these robots be caricatures when the behaviors and language are modeled off of reality? Compare Mudflap or Skids to Lil Wayne, Kanye West, or most modern rappers/”gangstas” - are there discernible differences? Does Transformers take it past the point of reality as an over-the-top portrayal of real life? No.

Bill Cosby famously once said that the rappers and “gangstas” of the world were doing nothing but perpetuating their own stereotypes to the detriment of their race. By these kinds of personalities being included in modern movies, and even portrayed by futuristic robots, it could be argued that the purveyors of such culture finally won the battle - they are recognized as a cultural subset worthy of big screen attention.

Is it sad to see such changes happen in the modern world, both on and off the screen? Of course - any time people choose to be unintelligent and offensive for the simple reason of being so, it is a loss to humanity. But is it racist for these changes to appear on the silver screen? No - most movies are a presentation of an augmented reality, and Transformers is no different in this regard.

So let’s leave Michael Bay alone, alright?
