Arsenal, Liverpool & Everton On Alert As Marseille Enforcer Looks To Move On

Premier League clubs Arsenal, Liverpool and Everton will be heartened by the comments made by Lorik Cana, with the Marseille captain conceding he could leave the Ligue 1 side this summer.

OM have just lost out on the French title to Bordeaux, with 25-year-old Cana revealing that even though he is under contract at the Stade Velodrome until 2012 the door is still open for him to leave France.

“Even if I have another three years on my contract, the door is still open for me to depart,” Cana said.

Cana went on to reveal that he will discuss his future at Marseille at the end of the campaign, with the midfield enforcer claiming the Premiership and Bundesliga are attractive to him and that it’s 50/50 on whether he stays at OM.

“I’ll talk to my family and the leaders [of Marseille] at the end of the season. I will not finish my career here. But I don’t want to hurry and I don’t want to leave without winning something for OM. Today, it’s 50-50,” he added.

“England and Germany are the two championships that interest me the most.”

Gunners manager Arsene Wenger is believed to be a big fan of Cana, with the Arsenal boss in the market for a midfield general to partner Cesc Fabregas at the Emirates Stadium. While, Reds boss Rafa Benitez is understood to see the former Paris St Germain player as the ideal replacement for Xabi Alonso, should the Spaniard depart Anfield.

Everton were heavily linked with a swoop for Cana last summer and manager David Moyes could rekindle his interest in the midfielder, should the Scot fail to land the Merseyside clubs main target Joao Moutinho at Sporting Lisbon.

Former Spurs Boss Vetoes Vermaelen Arsenal Move?

Former Tottenham Hotspur boss Martin Jol is believed to have vetoed the sale of Thomas Vermaelen to Spurs’ local Premier League rivals Arsenal after taking over from Marco van Basten at Ajax.

Jol, has only just arrived at the Amsterdam Arena after a successful campaign in the Bundesliga with Hamburg. However, his arrival could not have come at a worse time for Gunners manager Arsene Wenger. It understood Jol wants to keep Belgian International Vermaelen, who was believed to have been close to a move to the Emirates Stadium.

Wenger had identified 23-year-old Vermaelen as an ideal addition to his defensive options at the Premiership club, with the commanding central-defender also believed to have been on the radar of Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill. After scoring against the Villans in the UEFA Cup.

Now it is understood that Jol has told the board of the directors at the Godenzonen not to sell Vermaelen, with it thought that the Belgian stopper will remain in Amsterdam for another year at least.

This will come as a blow to Wenger, who is keen to tighten a defence at the North London club that the Frenchman feels is responsible for Arsenal falling just short on all fronts last season.

Arsenal To Join Liverpool, Spurs & Real Madrid In Race For Boro Starlet?

Arsenal are believed to be the latest Premier League club to show an interest in Middlesbrough winger Adam Johnson, according to reports, with Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United also said to be tracking the Boro flier.

21-year-old Johnson came through the youth system at the Riverside Stadium to make his Premiership debut against the Gunners in 2005. The winger’s performances for Middlesbrough this term attracted attention from La Liga giants Real Madrid in the January transfer window, with Johnson likely to depart the North East this summer following Boro’s relegation to the Championship.

Johnson is understood to have already told Middlesbrough that he is keeping his options open, the winger having just a year to run on his contract at the Riverside. Boro boss Gareth Southgate will be loathed to lose Johnson, but knows that Middlesbrough need to trim the squad and wont be able to stand in the England Under-21 International’s way should a suitable offer arrive.

England Under-21 boss Stuart Pearce has included Johnson in the squad for this, summers European Championships, where some good performances from the young winger, will surely cause the Boro players price tag to soar.

Yeap. Confirm is looking at the future. With the wages he was given, its much better than playing in UCL. Enough to last him the rest of his life. Clever move. Yeah.

Added on June 3, 2009, 10:04 amOpps, hes only paid 80k a week. Not as much as i expected.

Good dou. Now we can focus on Cana without hesitation.

I don't see us offering Barry that 80k a week contract even if a bid from us is accepted in the first place.

Two different schools of thought on the Barry swoop by City.

QUOTE
Has Arsene Wenger been left in the blocks by one of his rival managers? Has the Arsenal board whacked the handcuffs on their manager? Only they know. Maybe Wenger does not want Barry anymore.

But 12 months ago he most definitely did.

Back then the £18-20 million price tag seemed too hefty to pay. This time the price seems right, and it seems Arsenal – more than Liverpool (who clearly do not need Barry) – have missed the boat.

Last summer I wrote a blog lambasting Liverpool’s pursuit of Barry, based purely on the fact that Benitez would be wrong to attempt to pair Mascherano with the Villa man – at the expense of the more creative Xabi Alonso.

Wenger did not want to do that. He wanted Barry as the deeper-lying midfielder to Fabregas, providing the foundation on which Arsenal would play. Such an idea would have prompted a significantly more positive blog.

Value for money is a subjective matter. Is Barry worth £12 million? Probably. He’s an England midfielder, he’s versatile, he puts his foot in and has the ability to bring energy to a game. Everything Arsenal need.

Now we move on to Barry. another greedy git. Last year, he was within moments of joining Liverpool, with his dream of playing Champions League football. But credit to the lad, he turned them down, deciding to stay with the club who made him (aka poached him from Brighton for nothing). He said that he would be loyal to Villa, and would stay if they make the Champions League the season after. And he was loyal to his word. Villa failed to make Champions League football. So he left. To fill in the hole next to Cesc at Arsenal No. To replace Madrid bound Alonso at Liverpool No. To replace the injured Hargreaves and the OAP Scholes at United No. He left To join Manchester City, A side who already have 2 better CMers (Kompany and De Jong, arguably 3 with the form of Ireland). A team who finish 10th. TENTH.

Like with Ribery, you have to wonder why he changed his mind. Perhaps he realised he wasn't as good as he thought. Perhaps he realised that Liverpool preferred Mascherano/Gerrar/Lucas and would rather spend their money on class like Silva or Tevez. Perhaps he realised that Alex Song was better then him, and if Arsenal were to buy a CMer, it would be a strong, energetic one, not a 1 paced one. Perhaps he realised that Fergie though Anderson, with his shin splints, chubby face, was a much better player then the man constantly shown up in the big games for England.

If you look back last year, Barry was in a more advanced midfield role with Petrov playing the holding role. For me, if Barry signed for Arsenal, this would mean that Barry would fit into the "Denilson" role next to Fabregas with Song occupying the holding role, assuming we are going to play 4-3-3. But AW has always believed in the 4-4-2 and we have always played best with the 4-4-2. So perhaps there is a reason why he decided to give Barry a pass now that we have addressed the solution of the Pires role with the arrival of Arshavin?

On the other hand, Barry has loads of experience which is something we really need at the moment. Yes he may not be the fastest or most energetic, but he does remind me of Gilberto. But then again, Cesc plays best with an energetic partner and while Gilbert played best with Vieira in the side. Damn I'm contradicting myself. Let's get Cana then tongue.gif

Of course, like I always say; stats don't tell the whole story but they surely carry some weight. For some reason Denilson's stats this season has been absolutely astounding, even though there probably wasn't a single match where he bossed the midfield and outgunned the opponents.

If given the option between Alonso and Denilson in our team, the Spaniard's superior passing and vast experience at both club and international level will give him the utmost advantage here. There's little doubt about what Alonso could offer to our team, but my point is again to reiterate how important Denilson has been to us this season.

And yeah, Arsene speaks about stats, but probably more as an advertisement gesture laugh.gif:

Nice stats you got there.

As mentioned, although in raw eyes, Alonso is more superior than Denilson, statistically it isn't.

The stats show something. Whether it's important or not, it depends on individuals biggrin.gif

For me, Alonso is STILL ahead of Denilson. It's his presence in the squad counts (physically or spiritually). Having his presence in the squad allows leadership and role-models (things I mentioned in previous posts) to shine smile.gif I really could not see these in Denilson.

HOWEVER, it doesn't mean Denilson is nothing or we can throw away the stats. The stats shows that Denilson is a good player - technically on the field. He can be a good player, a good "executor", a team player. He still lack of LEADERSHIP and PRESENCE in the team. Something Arsenal really really needs the most!

Now, what worries me is that Denilson has been doing well while Fabregas is irreplaceable. Both lack of presence to me. IF someone like Barry, Alonso, Cana, whoever comes in, Denilson will be forced to sit on the bench or play on the wings doh.gif This is not favorable to me but we really need leadership in our team sad.gif
