@ray, hold on the 'disable pagefile' part. i m still testing it, to see if any problems arising. i think i might have hit some errors with pagefile off on certain applications. will test thoroughly again and report back here.

@ray, one more trick that you can speed up your windows vista/win7 is to get a USB handydrive (4GB preferable) which is Readyboost capable to be used for Readyboost function in windows. Don't buy the normal slow speed type.

It helps a lot in boosting application load response. I am using one now even though I am on 8GB Ram, so I believe it will benefit the old rig much more than mine!

with nowadays machines higher than 2gb ram and even 3gb 4gb machines, disabling page file is common

page file was designed for lower ram stages such as 256 and 512 which was common nearly 10 years ago (windows xp)

now with large amounts of physical ram, page file becomes really insignificant

high load applications that use loads of paging and physical ram then only requires page file to be turned on
i remember photo editing, 3d studio, visual studio.net app and perhaps many more which i havent used out there uses lots of page file.

another scenario is Company of Heroes with 2GB physical ram and 0 page file will crash on the highest settings because the game chokes alot memory for details

Company of Heroes with 2GB physical ram and 2GB page flie soon after that runs perfectly fine and normal, so it depends on your app usage , or rather GAME usage biggrin.gif

if u want to turn it on,
the space to set is usually the total ram available +1mb biggrin.gif

anyways, page file is also used to store BSOD memory kernel dumps , hence the RAM size + 1mb ( the 1mb is just for date and header), which we seldom get these days anyways smile.gif

never set anything too low such as 256mb or lower because windows will annoy u with a stupid alert
and another thing is once u remove page file, u get back the space in C: drive biggrin.gif

for me, they are usually turned off in server environments biggrin.gif

Found a source to share on how to set GPU render than CPU load during HD playback.

http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/DXVASupport.html

QUOTE
DXVA is quite picky, so if you want to use it you have to respect those rules :

•Windows XP users, select Overlay Mixer, VMR7, VMR9 or VMR9 renderless
•Vista users, select EVR or EVR custom renderer

i have tested several applications intensively, pagefile is really needed or else the application might just crash. I checked event viewer, the applications having are memory addressing error after some heavy usage. I bet most likely it tries to write to a pagefile whereby it is not available in the system, therefore crashed. I enabled 512MB pagefile, so no crashes yet. will try to do some more tests.

@jcsy, server environment we NEVER turned off pagefile, it is handled by the system itself. to speed up disk pagefile I/O, we server administrators usually create a RAMdisk and allocate the pagefile there.

@edmin,RAMdisk operates in RAID?
No, RAMdisk is actually using portion of RAM as hard drive. example; having 8GB RAM, i allocate 2GB as RAMdisk. so overall i have 6GB physical RAM accessible by OS while 2GB is seen by OS as hard drive. widely popular used software for creating RAMdisk:

RAMDisk
