Hey I'm new to this site and I'm looking at buying a new laptop. I already own a Vaio and love it, its served me well over the last 3 years but I think its time I got a new one. Its been really resilient and reliable and I want to buy a new one.
I'm not sure which model i should get though because there are so many haha.
Obviously I'm looking for a laptop that can fulfill all my needs, such as those listed below:

-I'm about to go off to university so ill need it to be fairly light and not too bulky because I don't want to have to carry a brick around with all day to classes.
-I'm also into gaming, not serious hardcore gaming but I do play on a fairly regular basis, such as Empire Total war, which needs quite a decent PC. Therefore i would need a laptop that can handle these games and provide en enjoyable smooth experience.
-Additionally i travel on a regular basis so therefore I also require a fairly long lasting battery, maybe 4 -5 hours.
-Hd space isn't that important however i want a decent graphics card and processor (2.40ghz+)
-Lastly, and least importantly, I want it to look stylish (shouldn't be hard nearly all vaios are tongue.gif).

I've looked at many models but i can't determine which seems to be the one most suited to my needs. I hope that somebody can help me smile.gif.
Thanks a lot.

not sure how to connect to your dsl provider, its rely what kind of connection you set. say, if bridge type, you will have to setup the dialer like below guide, while if router type, you just have to access your router console.

Create a PPPoE client connection for Windows XP [source: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283070]
You can install the PPPoE client just like you install any other dial-up networking connection. To create a PPPoE client connection, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network and Internet Connections.
2. Click Network Connections, and then click Create a new connection in the Network Tasks pane.
3. After the Network Connection Wizard starts, click Next.
4. Click Connect to the Internet, and then click Next.
5. Click Set up my connection manually, and then click Next.
6. Click either Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and password or Connect using a broadband connection that is always on.
7. Type the Internet service provider (ISP) name that your ISP provided, and then click Next.
8. Type the user name that the ISP provided.
9. Type the password that the ISP provided.
10. Type the password one more time to confirm it, and then click Next.
11. Click Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop.
12. Click Finish to complete the wizard.

Its normal to have this kind of range with dedicated gpu.

the card has 1GB dedicated RAM (it's own memory), but if you are running gpu intesive application which make it out of this allocated memory, its able to share with system memory for its own use up to 2970MB. This technology known as hypermemory. read more here: http://ati.amd.com/Technology/hypermemory.html

Vaio CS will be good but it's quite heavy

Vaio TT will suit your "go light" and superior energy saving needs, but it doesn't comes with a graphic card so playing games are limited.

The only current Vaio that should be able to satisfy all your needs is the Z. Weight is somewhere between CS and TT, has a very powerful processor, tons of ram and tons of HDD and most important, there's a speed/stamina switch. Be prepared to fork out at least 8k though.

or you could go with the high end SR if you're fine with ATi graphics.

speaking of Z, theres is additional touch up done to the refresh Z which:

1. 3 new design introduce: Kaleidoscope, Dot matrix design lid and Red colour design lid.
2. All the new design above comes with black palm rest instead of silver palm rest.

kinda appealing and like the new looks. stylish, sleek and elegant.
here the pictures of the said update:

err yea, they tend to refresh their product quite frequently. but the next update quite minor with Z3 batch in term of specification (better cpu and ram capability) and some cosmetic update.
bet they would slap with Windows 7 when the OS make it first release end of this year / early next year too.

Hi Guys,

I'm a proud owner of a Vaio Z12 and a member in the the old thread V1. Wish to become a member in this thread as well. I really love my Z after using it for more than 7 months. Unfortunately a few days ago I discovered keyboard marks on my screen and after reading through the forum, someone mentioned (think it was Miyabi if not mistaken) that they screen actually touches the keyboard when it's closed. I wonder if there is any way or solution to clean and remove the keyboard marks and would it be advisible to have a screen protector to ensure the marks don't occure again in futere.

Also I was thinking of upgrading my OS to Vista x64 after installing 4GB of DD3 Ram. The only problem is I can't find any official x64 sony vaio driver for my Z1 where else there are x64 drivers available for Z3 which is the Z37 model. Not sure if the Z3 drivers will work for my Z1 Vaio. Any advice on this. Thank you in advance.

im using Z12 as well.
what i do is put a piece of soft cloth (cloth use to wipe spectacle glasses) in between the palmrest and the lid, or cut soft sponge the one that cover your keyboard (when you just bought it, this sponge usually come wit). having screen protector is good way too. and to clean the mark, maybe try wipe with damp cloth? preferable solution that suitable with lcd monitor. usually it come with cleaning kit. not adviceable to use pipe water to wet the cloth, since you may scrath the screen or spoil the screen layer. the screen touch because the lid kinda flex when there is pressure to the lid.

im not sure about the 64bit driver for Z1, you may give a try though. i might look for this solution later too.
