The fit and isolation matters a lot on the PL30, although there will be some sound leaks from the outside.
Either get biflanges if they work for you, or get the smallest tip that can fit and try to bury it deep into your ears. Due to the way the PL30 is designed, it doesn't fit very deep.
So far I felt that it works very well when there is very little surrounding sound, able to reproduce lots of subtleties and can somewhat work well even for orchestral music (for a cheap budget la). Instrumental separation is quite frankly amazing to say the least.
However when it's in a noisier environment, the sound doesn't really get blocked and you'd feel that you've to raise the volume, then the subtleties and clarity starts to blend into the noise, so it doesn't sound as nice then.
