Asus P5N7A-VM is kinda hot at the chipset. Make sure you got some good airflow going through that location.

It runs 42c~50c, without onboard VGA.

wow, i like the new scythe fans loh, seems to be on the silent side then pure airlflow.

The Noctua NH-C12P mod is really a killer, that cooler itself cost quite sum of money and it has been grind to fit in SUGO .. .... sweat.gif

Between Gigabyte GA-G31M-S2L and Asus GA-G31M-S2L which would be a better pick?

My build would be mainly for
1) Watching high definition movies
2) Online games

i think he is talking asus P5KPL-AM biggrin.gif anyway, both are good G31 mobo , but Gigabyte one has little bit more advantage with Gigabit LAN , asus one only 100/10 LAN .

The second cause of the heat on the Asus P5N7A-VM is because of the lousy chipset HS, the heat pipe is placed on top of the HS instead of going through the core contact, but you could add a 30mm fan to cool it down. I had to add two 120mm fans into my crowded SG03 to push more hot air out of the case, the noise is a pain in the ears.

Well aside from the new Nvidia chipsets, other chipsets like the intel G4x series or the other platform, like the AMD platforms is a good go.
However, im not sure how cool the new AMD platform runs, but i do know the Intel integrated and older AMD platform perform much more cooler than the GF9300.

Basically, its not recommended to run the P5N7A on SG02, Ive tried it on my other SG02 and the heat was accumulated badly in the case with or without extra exhaust fan.

I have the P5N7A-VM mobo in a SG01 casing. The GPU runs very hot >70C when idle. What I did was to stick on a 60mm Sunon fan (controlled by a Zalman Fanmate) directly on top of the heatsink. At full fan speed, temps go down to about 48C when idle, but fan is a bit noisy, so I usually reduce speed till I get temps just under 60C. This is one of the reasons I am switching my HTPC build from this mobo/SFF casing to a ATX desktop HTPC casing without integrated graphics but much better airflow. With additional cards (TV-Tuner, Sound card, etc) a SFF casing has relatively poor airflow and temps get a bit too warm for my liking.

Yeah i had the same thought, the main reason i switched to SFF because of the space i need on my table, at the same time I'm aiming for a fast setup in a small box, guess its kinda hard to get it right, not that its not possible.

I learned in the hard way by changing from SG02 to SG03, at least it'll last me for the next 4 years to come and hopefully wont break down due to excessive heat.

Also the galaxy 9800gtx+ fan is kinda weak, not much of a big cause since the heat is sucked out by a pci fan.

My chipset heat:

idle (under 23c room temperature)
38c~42c

idle (under 28c room temperature)
42c~46c

load (without integrated vga)
48c~50c

load (with integrated vga) this baby could run crysis @ low, lol
50c~70c+

load (without integrated vga during warm days, 28c+ room temp)
54c+

load (with integrated vga during warm days, 28c+ room temp)
70c~75c (BSOD @ 70c+)
