Benitez's backroom agree stays

Five members of Liverpool's backroom staff have followed Rafa Benitez's lead and have signed long-term deals at Anfield.

Benitez ended months of controversy by recently penning a five-year deal on Merseyside, concluding speculation he was set to quit the Reds in the summer.

And now assistant boss Sammy Lee, first-team coach Mauricio Pellegrino, goalkeeping coach Xavi Valero, fitness coach Paco de Miguel and chief scout Eduardo Macia have agreed contract extensions which will keep them with Liverpool for at least an additional two years.

When holding negotiations regarding his own future, Benitez stated that he was eager for his colleagues to also be offered assurances and the Spaniard is delighted with the outcome.

"I said when I signed my own deal recently that it was a priority to sort out the future of the technical staff," said the former Valencia boss.

"We work extremely well as a team, and continuity is essential if we are to build on the progress we have made this season and move the club further forward.

"I'm delighted we have been able to sort out the contracts."

I'm really excited about the prospect of Raul Albiol.

I have watched him play for Valencia for numerous times, and he really reminds me of Agger.

Actually, we can have Agger and Albiol at the same time, keeping in mind that Hyypia's retirement will not be too far off and Carragher is not getting any younger too.

I dont think Agger will stay. In fact i think the signing of Albiol is very much depend on Agger extending his contract. Make sense if you think about it, both players as you said are similar in quality and abilities. and our interest in Albiol was made known during the Agger contract stall. I cant see us signing both players, i'd love it to happen but both players warrant first team action and wont settle for second fiddle. I think Rafa has enough problems juggling between Carra, Skrtel, Agger and Hypia as it is.

Capello: Gerrard at the top of his game

PA

England coach Fabio Capello has hailed Steven Gerrard as one of the best players in the world.

The Liverpool skipper has been one of the major influences behind the Reds' renewed challenge for the Premier League title and Capello is hoping he can produce the same kind of form at Wembley tomorrow when the Three Lions tackle Slovakia.

Gerrard has also emerged as favourite to win the PFA player of the year award, with Zinedine Zidane among those championing the 28-year-old's right to be regarded as one of the world's finest.

Having worked with the Merseysider at such close quarters, the assessment is not one Capello is going to disagree with.

"Zidane said Gerrard was one of the best in the world and I agree with him,'' said Capello.

"It is a fantastic time for him. He is at the very top of his game.''

Last year in Paris, Capello was faced with puzzled observers wondering why he used Gerrard as a second striker. Gerrard's playing position in the England team has been a constant source of debate.

The England boss said: "Against France last year I put Steven Gerrard into the team as a second striker and everyone said 'why?'.

"Now Steven Gerrard is doing well for Liverpool as a second striker and people ask me 'why am I not playing him there?' Thank you for supporting me at that time.

"Also, the last time he played -- in Belarus last October -- he scored one, nearly got another and played very well. So I don't know why we are speaking about Gerrard's position in the team.''

As Capello correctly observes, England also have different players to Liverpool.

So, as Gerrard was nominally selected on the left hand side of midfield in Minsk, it seems a fair bet he will be filling the same slot tomorrow as Wayne Rooney should be providing the main support to Emile Heskey.

Rooney's temperament has again been under the microscope following his dismissal at Fulham last weekend.

And England fans will still shake their heads at Rooney's dismissal when the World Cup quarter-final with Portugal in Gelsenkirchen had reached its critical phase in 2006.

The England coach admitted he had spoken to the Manchester United striker this week, not so much about his conduct but his importance to the team.

It is a position Capello does not imagine will change in the near future, which is probably one of the reasons why he has not castigated the 23-year-old.

"I do not need to tell Wayne Rooney to cool down,'' he said.

"Sometimes, to do that is impossible. I played the game. On occasion I was like that too.

"It depends on the opponents, the result and lots of other things. You need to be aggressive. We need the fire because it is part the England spirit.

"He is very hot blooded but he has always found the balance with us and I am confident it will always be like this.''

As Heskey is hardly a reliable goalscorer for all his other more unselfish attributes, Rooney is required because he finds the back of the net more regularly for his country.

"I like Rooney because sometimes, when the team is playing slowly, he shakes them up. That is very important for us,'' said Capello.

"He has also scored a lot of goals for us.''

Aaron Lennon has been promised some involvement, presumably on the right. Whether it will be from the start of a match against the Group Three leaders, arranged as a warm-up to Wednesday's crucial World Cup qualifier against the Ukraine, depends on whether Capello hands David Beckham his record 109th cap from the bench.

"I have followed Lennon and watched two games, in the Carling Cup final and against Chelsea,'' said Capello.

"He had some fantastic moments and is in great form at the moment.''

The same could also be said of Beckham, who is set to eclipse Bobby Moore as England's most capped outfield player.

Both should face extra competition next week as Shaun Wright-Phillips is expected to start training tomorrow after finally shrugging off an ankle injury that has dogged him since Manchester City's victory over Sunderland last Sunday.

Ben Foster might be included against Slovakia as Capello assesses another of David James' rivals for the first choice goalkeeping slot.

Capello has decided to urge what is going to be a near capacity crowd at Wembley to lay off Ashley Cole, who appears to have been singled out as public enemy number one.

"We need the support of the fans,'' said Capello.

"They booed Ashley Cole at the last game -- but he is an England player not an opponent.

"The supporters need to back us both when we are playing well and when we are not playing so well.''

gerrard again.

Liverpool FC Rafa Benitez tells of failed David Silva bid

RAFA Benitez today confirmed that Liverpool DID make an inquiry for David Silva only for their interest to cool after learning of Valencia’s asking price.

As revealed in Thursday’s ECHO, the Reds boss had earmarked Silva as one of his top summer transfer targets and was willing to make an offer for the Spanish international if Valencia’s valuation was realistic.

But Benitez today announced that he will not be following up his initial interest in the 23-year-old.

Confirming the ECHO’s version of events, Benitez said: “It is true that we were asking about the situation with him but we are not happy with the situation now and he will not be a target for us.”

Valencia are believed to be seeking as much as £30m for the player and even though Benitez rates the Euro 2008 star highly he would not be willing to pay that much for his services.

The only possible way any such deal will now be resurrected will be if Valencia lower their asking price significantly.

P.S: Rumour has it that we are 6.1m short of Valencia's asking price.
