RAFA AND STEVIE SCOOP MONTHLY GONGS

Rafa Benitez and Steven Gerrard were celebrating today after scooping the Barclays Manager and Player of the Month awards for March.

The Reds enjoyed an incredible month with four straight victories and Gerrard was at his sensational best, netting six times in four matches.

In clinching the honour, the Anfield skipper becomes the first player to win the monthly award on five occasions since its inception in 1994.

Meanwhile, it's also the fifth occasion Benitez has been the recipient of the Manager of the Month gong after guiding Liverpool to within a point of league leaders Manchester United and into the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

A 2-0 home win over Sunderland was followed by the 4-0 demolition of Real Madrid at Anfield in the second-leg of the Champions League last 16 tie.

An unforgettable 4-1 victory over United at Old Trafford came next, with Liverpool rounding off a fine month by crushing Aston Villa 5-0 at Anfield.

"I'm pleased because it shows we are playing well, scoring goals and getting good results," said manager Rafael Benitez.

"It also shows that behind the scenes the staff are working really hard. We have got ourselves into a good position, but now we have to keep going."

As part of the ongoing review of the structure of the Melwood backroom staff under Rafa Benitez in advance of the 2009-2010 season, following a mutual agreement the Club confirms it will not be renewing the contract of Angel Vales Vazquez as Head of Video Analysis and Reserve Team Coach next year. The Club wishes Angel well for the future.

Liverpool FC star Steven Gerrard pleads not guilty to affray

user posted image

LIVERPOOL FC star Steven Gerrard has today denied being involved in a late-night bar brawl.

The Reds skipper pleaded not guilty to a single charge of affray following an incident at a Southport bar which left a dad-of-two needing hospital treatment.

Gerrard, 28, was celebrating the team's 5-1 demolition of Newcastle at the Lounge Inn, in Bold Street, when it is alleged trouble flared.

Today Gerrard arrived at Liverpool crown court to face a bank of photographers and camera crews.

Security was set up around the courtroom and there was a police presence inside.

Dressed in a dark blue suit and tie and light blue shirt, the Huyton-born midfielder entered the courtroom first.

He took his place in the glass-fronted dock in courtroom 3.1 alongside six others for the plea and case management hearing.

He spoke only to confirm his full name, Steven George Gerrard, and enter his not guilty plea to the single charge of affray on December 29.

It is alleged the incident was sparked by part-time DJ Marcus McGee's refusal to play a song.

The businessman and father-of-two, from Churchtown, was taken to hospital suffering from facial injuries after the 2.30am brawl.

It is alleged a bottle was thrown and Mr McGee, 34, was kicked and punched. He suffered a broken tooth and cuts to his face.

Dad-of-two Gerrard and the rest of the group were arrested on nearby Lord Street soon after.

England vice-captain Gerrard, of Formby, was originally charged with assault, but that was dropped when he appeared in front of the city's magistrates last month.

Assault counts were also dropped against his co-defendants John Doran and Ian Gerard Smith – leaving six of the seven facing only a charge of affray.

Today all the men entered not guilty pleas.

They were Accrington Stanley reserve goalkeeper Ian Dunbavin, 28, of Guildford Road, Southport; winger Bobby Grant, 18, of Enstone Avenue, Litherland; Doran, 29, of Woodlands Road; Smith, 19, of Hilary Avenue; and John McGrattan, 33, of Rimmer Avenue, all of Huyton.

Paul McGrattan, 31, of Linden Drive, Huyton, denied affray and also common assault on a police officer.

The Recorder of Liverpool, Judge Henry Globe QC asked the court whether there were any objections to him presiding over the trial as a local football fan.

He told the court: "I have as a general interest in football and as a person local to the area I have an interest in local football clubs including Liverpool Football Club.

"I am not season ticket holder, nor am I regular attender at Anfield, but it's right to say I have been a visitor to Anfield as a guest on handful occasions.

No counsel objected to Judge Globe and he fixed a trial date for July 20. It is estimated it will last up to three weeks.

He granted all the men conditional bail.

I dont know there is a special unit like this, head of video analysis laugh.gif . He definitely contributed a lot to Rafa strategy, exploiting opponent team weakness, watch their strikers movement, how to defend against certain players, and of course helping torres on how to executing a perfect dribbling, tricks and etc.....
