Stephen King's IT Coming to the Big Screen

user posted image

Warner Bros. is developing a IT feature, hiring Dave Kajganich to adapt Stephen King's novel, with Dan Lin and Vertigo's Roy Lee and Doug Davison producing.

IT centers on seven children in a small Maine town who confront the source of a series of murders in 1958 and again in 1985, when the cycle begins again.

The novel was previously adapted into a 1990 ABC miniseries.

There's a big difference when watching it back in the 90s when you're still a kid and watching it now in the 2000s and in your late teens onward. To make it simpler for you to imagine the impact - just think how awed people were at the CG shown in Jurassic Park back in the 90s versus now. As the time goes by, the type of horror 'required' to scare people evolves.

doh.gif Orgy definitely out. Was surprised at the 1 girl x many boys underage orgy description in the book. Somewhat scarier than Pennywise (in the book). LOL

Tim Curry's Pennywise is scarier, but that's only comparing with the first look. I hope the subsequent reveals are scarier than this. The new Pennywise macam samseng instead of a psychotic murderous clown.

Seem to stay true to the 1990 version... definitely have high hopes for this.

"The Dark Tower" was a miss, I'm hopeful for this.

Although it fails to replace the much more memorable, scary clown of the 1990 adaptation, this much needed updated adaptation is still a very fun, scary adventure.

The newer version of IT is like having those kids in Stand By Me movie to play as the children in this new IT movie.

Yeapp, the dialogue for those kids in the new IT film contain cursing and swearing such as saying f words, s words, m words etc.

To follow the current horror movie trend, the movie got jump scare moments but later on its not really scare anymore when the movie proceed further to the end.

The special effects for the cgi ghost and Pennywise transformation and deformation really make the old IT movie looks kinda cheezy.

The story retain its old originality but the joke about New Kid on the Block kinda turn the movie off.

And there is also a homage to 90s movies and games such as Street Fighter, Elm Streets, Tim Burton Batman and etc.

I gave it 7.5 out of 10. Minus 2.5 mark because no need to put joke scene or dialogue in a horror movie.

PS :
1) I like to shout Fck you!!!to stupid couple that watched this movie last night at seat AA 9-10 at MBO Citta Mall. While everyone silently watching the movie, you guys mumbling about something else lovey dovey amd cannot stop talking. Esxpecially your stupid bitch/wife/gf who keep saying kesiannya dia, ee takutnya etc. Fuck you!!! Fuck You!!! Fuck You!!!!

2) To the couple who sit in front of me that keep asking" eh? habis dah? Ada dua part eahh???". Clearly you both are Gen Y and didnt know that there are two part of this movie. The children part and the second part where they already adult. The director already on a talk to make the second part if the movie is a success.

Am I the only one thinking this movie is overhyped?

I've never read the book and I could barely remember the TV show back then except that the clown was creepy and he's a pedophile or something.

This new IT movie marketed itself as horror/thriller movie but I didn't really get the horror elements. They are too "in ur face". It lacks nuance and the build up to these horror scenes are minimum. It's like they can't wait to throw those cool horror visuals at you. It felt like an action movie where it just up the ante as it goes along.

Just watched this movie.

Tbh, I feel that this movie is way way better than the overrated Annabelle : Creation movie.

I know it's a stupid comparison, but the horror feeling in this movie is much much better.

And yeah, I still don't understand how IT is created.

I think I should go buy the book for further understanding.

I gave 8/10.

How's the censorship for the movie in our local cinemas?

I'm just sad they didn't include the kind of controversial orgy scene that was in the book into the movie. It adds a different layer of view to the kids.

Firstly, the movie is creepy as fck. I'm glad I never watch It when I was a little boy (or I watched it but forgot about it) and not being afraid with any clown I see. The slideshow scene got me jumped on my seat and I was shivering after that.

And now I just realized that the reality (in the movie) is actually a lot more scarier than the whole clown thing.

The kissing scene was cut. I don't think there's an orgy scene though except the part where the boys staring at Bev's body.

all the curse words are in tact except for one scene with the word a**hole which got muted lol.

all the gory scenes are also untouched. only one kissing scene got cut.

so yea, very minimal censorship but wildly inconsistent.

IT isnt a clown, IT is an alien.

I felt that this remake was really good. A 7.5/10 for me.

Started off strong and, although it got less scarier towards the end, it still maintained a somewhat dark feel to the whole movie.

I didnt quite get the cutting of the last kiss scene when they didnt censor all the "F" words or when Ben kissed Beverly...

Note: They cut out the orgy scene from the movie as the director said that it was not necessary (in a way)

Probably the only intriguing Hollywood horror movie this year. A coming to age soft horror movie. Many didn’t realize but it’s rare to have Hollywood make a horror clocked at 2h let alone OVER 2h. Last was 2y ago Crimson Peak(2015). More time to develop and flourish. Recommended to watch.

Glad the updated version panned out to be much better and to a degree the kids outdone certain aspects of the book. Really curious how much of Cary Fukunaga's treatment retain over this version. Pretty sure that could be a very different than this somehow semi arthouse and semi commercial end product.

PS: What's up with all the pedobear enthusiasts keep pointing out the gang bang scene not in the movie. I do question what relevance does that bring to the movie and furthermore it just wrong to expect it gonna end up in a major studio offering. Love it or hate it...Stephen King has a tendency to do over batshit crazy things in his stories.

A very different interpretation of the movie based on the previous scripts by Cary Fukunaga. Thought the casting of Ben Mendelsohn as "It" is perfect. Bill Skarsgard still did a bang up job and I think Mendelsohn will give it more nuanced and even more creepy. Definitely will be much more darker and not afraid to be disturbing.

I think the movie is a bit too draggy. They spend too much time on the kids without much explanation about the clown or the events happening. Sometimes I felt like I am watching Stranger Things. Overall, good production value and acting especially the girl and the fat boy and the clown of course.

IT is a true stephen King movie, probably one of the closest in recent memory, but it captures everything Stepehen King. Hence folks who dont like the build ups, the creepy characters that are not the monster will find it draggy.

Id say 9, not the scariest movie around, but there are a alot of great scenes, the characters were well established, the detail is amazing (anyone notice almost each TV in the town plays the clown show) and the labour of love is very obvious.

This movie feels more like Stand By Me, but instead of dead body it's creepy clown.
Love it. I'm glad we get to see a good adaptation of IT.
Hope they'll change abit of the 2nd part to make it better as it was my least favorite part of the story.
The movie features great casts and great acting, and I wouldn't have it any other way as a fan of the book.
9/10

Definitely liked this one a lot... stayed very faithful to the original, and the late 1980s... make me really miss those days sad.gif

I am just so friggin pissed with the censorship.

F-words uncensored, plenty of other innuendos, but there was one word that was censored?? And that last bit (kissing scene?) too?? mad.gif WTF... this movie is rated 18, leave it be. It's like half way through the movie, the censors decided to take a break and toss the work to someone else. Inconsistent sh**.

It (2017)

Time, how fleeting are thy....

This Stephen King novel, was publish in 1986.

I read it during 1989, because a friend recommended it.

I don't remember liking it (due to Stephen King's writing style) and was mildly amused by the 1990 miniseries because John-Boy (Richard Thomas) from The Waltons was in it.

Again, I was not overwhelmed with "OMG I luv this so much."

Just watched this earlier, and I am tickled pink!!

Why?

For those who is "used to" my reviews, I do tend to "go on and on" about nonsensical reminiscence. I apologise, if I am reverting to my normal style of writing.

The reason why I am tickled pink in, in the book, the story (when the kids were young) took place in the 50s (about the same time as Stand by Me)

In this iteration (this movie), the cleverly moved forward the timeline of the kid to the 80s?

Again, Why?

I have a feeling, they (script writers) sneakily, brought it to the 80s, because alot of people would remember reading IT during the 80s. So they can relate very substantially, because they live it.

Smart S.O.B.s..... (pardon my french)

All the 80s references, were NOT lost to me, and as I had indicated, it added to my viewing pleasure.

Production Designer Claude Paré did a fantastic job (bringing back the 80s). Same goes to Set Decoration, Rosalie Board.

And of course Costume designer, Janie Bryant.

Script, was great. (I did not appreciate the books going back and forth between the adults and children)

Cast, strong (poor Georgie.....)

And, I totally agree with the R rating. Kids, please do not watch this until you can handle it.

Great Movie and the fact it is horror, heaven....

I personally don't feel this movie is scary or creepy as all. But it is so good. A great blend of suspense, built up, laughter and awesome moment. I want the sequel to be similar in tone too. The kids are just too awesome

My only complaint is probably the build up and random encounter with IT in 1st half of the movie was a bit too much and IT lost its scary elements to me

It (2017) (Addendum)

For my original review, please go to

Mov_freak's IT review

What I want to talk about here now is the HD version of this movie.

Fantastic transfer

The picture quality and sound if excellent.

Although the book took place in the 1980s... the movie brought the time line to 1990s.

The details are amazing (picture and sound)

Definitely is reference for me.

I remember reading the book when I was a kid...probably around when I was 10. In hindsight it wasn't a book suited to my age. Very adult and dark! I can't remember too much about it now, except that the book was creepy as fuck and also weird as shit. In equal measures possibly.

Anyway the movie is a glossy, Hollywood adaptation of the book that lacks any scares whatsoever. In fact the creepiest part of the entire movie happens in the first 5 mins, with the iconic drain scene from the book. It's all downhill from there, with telegraphed scares aplenty, replete with CGI. You've seen the kids here in so many movies before so even they don't entertain.

IT part 1 was great. Creepy & done right

This one deals with his daughter & ultimately him

Really liked the BGM. Easily the most intense, heart-pounding bgm ever used in mainstream film trailer barring superhero films complete with those creepy "huhuhu" giggle lol

Feels alot darker, intense & definetly alot brutal for sure....faint hearted beware

Already giving the feels of this sequel is gonna overshadow its part 1 counterpart

One wishes such trend keeps popping from time to time...to bring us to reality in the midst of kid-friendly super hero films onslaught

Not as worthy as the first outing. Movie length and wishy-washy pacing puts me off. Started to feel Pennywise overstaying his welcome by the second act. As good as the grown up casting, but they don't stick the landing on a whole.

It Chapter Two (2019)

It is no secret, I liked the 2017 IT.

Casting, Sets and direction were spot on!

So, how does the second one fare?

Well, casting is great. Apart from Bill (James McAvoy), the other adult casts do look like their younger counterpart.

James Ransone really capture his younger counterpart mannerism. Kudos

The direction and cinematography started great. Shots were well planned and followed on well with what was done in the first movie.

Story-wise... it suffers a little.

And I blame the source material.

This movie suffers the same issue I had with the book.

The cutting back and forth between the past and present, made the flow of the movie a little clunky at times.

I am also not sure if they shot the kids bits during the first episode, because they look the same as when they were in the first movie (eg. kids grow up so quickly)

I did guess Richie Tozier's secret and I have to admit, I got the subject wrong.... Am I making sense?

So, overall, great movie.

Would have been better if there are more scary.

As per usual, the above is my two sen.

I don't know why so much hate for the 2nd chapter of this movie.

Tbh, I enjoyed it a lot compared to first chapter. Alot of my friends that watched the 1st chapter, they said it's boring.

Beware for the 2nd chapter, not suitable for weak heart.

Banyak scene terkejut tak henti henti. I can't sit properly due to this.

I feel more satisfied watching the 2nd chapter compared to first one.

My rating 4/5.

As with majority of King's books, his third act usually spiral into mumbo jumbo territory. On the pages, the effect not that pronounce but on a visual medium, it's jarring and messy.

Remember that one scene from the IT 2017 film (where Billy found Georgie's raincoat at the end) that made you bawled your eyes out? Despite its flaws, it managed to deliver a solid story and that sweet emotional payoff in the end.

Replace the above with messy plot, a little too much levity and little emotional payoff, and you get this film. doh.gif

....uhhh maybe they could step up the scale a bit?

For all the talk of the clown as the eater of worlds, they should make it even more threat.

Why do i feel like it's a same old shit?

Pennywise, the eater of worlds...MEH.

At least Stranger Things stepped up every season for bigger threat.

6/10 for me.
