Photos of Next Gen iPhone in Action? Auto-Focus and Compass

user posted image

A Chinese-language blog UMPCFever posted what it claims are the first photos of the next generation iPhone in action. According to the rough automated translation these images show the new iPhone but as it is a prototype the external design may change is not therefore not featured.

According to the report, the new iPhone does contain an autofocus camera that is uses an on-screen square that can be moved by the tap of a finger to chose the object of focus. Also shown is the long rumored digital compass as well as compass software (pictured above). Those features seem to be specific to the next generation iPhone, though the site also demos MMS and Copy/Paste with Images.

We've never heard of any reports from UMPCFever, so we can't judge their credibility, but the features shown seem consistent with circulating rumors as well as leaked video recording interface found in the Beta 3.0 software.

The iPhone Blog reports that in the iPhone 3.0 beta firmware, users are being told that may not re-download applications over-the-air without being charged. The dialog box (shown above), however, does indicate that users may still re-download applications for free through their computer.

This is a distinct change from how things currently work. In the current version of the operating system, iPhones and iPod Touches may re-download applications both over-the-air and on their computer without charge.

Update: While we first speculated that the reason behind the move is likely to prevent the illegal sharing of applications in the 3.0 firmware, further testing indicates that the results are sporadic. So, we're not sure the reasoning behind the change, but it should be clearer when 3.0 is released.

That tempting "update" button

Yesterday, Apple started pushing out their official iTunes 8.2, which supports mobile devices at firmware 3.0. Here’s why you jailbreakers and yellowsn0w-users shouldn’t really accept that “Update now?” question:

    * Most people aren’t at 3.0.  In fact 3.0 is still in beta and has lots of bugs (especially related to push updates).
    * It breaks your ability to use QuickPwn, PwnageTool, and iPhone Tunneling Suite (ssh over usb).  We don’t think this is a deliberate breakage of these tools.  It’s just that Apple has updated a low-level USB protocol that normally only Apple cares about (but jailbreakers care about).
    * So far, the only appreciable change to iTunes 8.2 is the Genius function working on videos.
    * It may actually break Palm Pre’s connection to the device (please give us feedback on this).

This update is one of those that incidentally breaks QuickPwn and PwnageTool.  It doesn’t seem like an anti-jailbreak.  But nonetheless, it will break your ability to re-run QuickPwn or PwnageTool’s dfu-entry.

Because this update isn’t a deliberate anti-jailbreak measure, it’s easily fixed in our tools.  But we really don’t want to update our tools until 3.0 is out, so please don’t update to 8.2 if you think you’ll need to rejailbreak your device. smile.gif

YellowSn0w on 2.2.1 and beyond

We see many questions about whether yellowsn0w can ever be made to work on firmware versions past 2.2 (or equivalently, basebands past 02.28).  This is probably a good place to address those questions:

If there is a yellowsn0w update for firmware after 2.2 (or basebands after 02.28), there is no way it would ever be released before 3.0 is official.  It just wouldn’t make any sense to release an exploit for something that only those who have beta 3.0’s (NDA signers) could use.  Most people in the world aren’t NDA signers.  Any yellowsn0w update for 3.0 would need to happen *after* 3.0 is officially available.

just now im thinking of try installed OS 3.0 beta 5 but because of this review stop me from thinking of upgrading my iphone to beta 5,

especially this:
* It breaks your ability to use QuickPwn, PwnageTool, and iPhone Tunneling Suite (ssh over usb).

guess i will stop thinking of doing it then.. sweat.gif

em, haha, yes same as me, it " most unlikely" seems to break my heart too. sad.gif but nvm then, somehow i'm more eager to OS 3.0 other than front camera(new design) because i want to apply 3G unlimited after 3.0 officially come out because of the "thetering" application making me want to use it as modem for my laptop hehe.biggrin.gif

its on 8 june right. just next week icon_idea.gif . i will upgrade it once its official release come out.

i think no need to be too worry,
i'm SURE next generation iPhone has front camera for video conversation.

i don't think will be matte rubber backing,
as Apple like to design their product surface as glossy as possible, or as shining as possible, or aluminum smoke surface. (just look at their ipod, imac, macbook, mac)
Apple like to make their product to be easily grab ppl attention.

iPhone OS 3.0 to Allow Users to Share and Recommend Apps?

QUOTE

BusinessWeek reports that Apple has included features in its upcoming iPhone OS 3.0 that would allow users to share apps with other iPhone users, although whether Apple decides to activate those features remains to be seen.

Apple's new iPhone 3.0 software includes features that, if activated by Apple, may let users share software with one another, according to a person familiar with the technology. Eventually, iPhone users may even get a commission when they've induced someone else to make a purchase, says Richard Doherty, director at consultant Envisioneering Group. Apple spokeswoman Jennifer Bowcock wouldn't discuss features that might be available in the future, saying only, "We've made no announcements at this time."
The report discusses the role users might play in promoting applications to other users, pointing to the existing "Top 10" lists in most mobile app stores and "Tell a Friend" features built into some apps as useful but incomplete means of drawing attention to standout applications. Apple could take advantage of the "peer-to-peer connectivity" described at Apple's iPhone OS 3.0 preview event in March to allow users to "invite" nearby users to download applications.

One example of P2P connectivity will be available in the new iPhone 3.0 software, due this summer. Users will be able to play multiplayer games with one another using Bluetooth connectivity, rather than needing to be on a carrier's network. A player's phone will automatically detect nearby iPhones and iPod touches that run the same app and send them an invitation to join the game. Initially, the feature will work only when both parties already have a particular app. "Now you can sell copies of your app to two players instead of one," says Dave Howell, a former Apple engineer who now runs peer-to-peer file-sharing apps maker Avatron Software. In the future, a player may be able to invite another to a game when the second person does not yet own a particular app. Such invitations could trigger additional purchases.
iPhone OS 3.0 will be a major topic of discussion at next week's Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco.

on a side note....

Adam Jackson has posted the first photos (flickr) from WWDC 2009. Apple has started putting up banners 6 days prior to the event. The theme of this year's WWDC appears centered around the App Store. The main banner in Moscone West reads:

One year later. Light-years ahead.
The phrase refers to the iTunes App Store that was launched (less than) one year ago, but has seen major success with over 1 billion apps downloaded in the first nine months. The iPhone will clearly take center stage at WWDC with discussion about the upcoming 3.0 Firmware release as well as possibility that Apple will announce a new iPhone.

WWDC 2009 kicks off on June 8th with a keynote address to be given by Phil Schiller.

Well, from the banner we can see lots of applications from iPhone. So there will be news on the iPhone, maybe app sales or new App Store app launch. I dare not bet on iPhone announcement.
