Fergie & Rafa Are Like Squabbling Children
Alex Ferguson has been a football manager for 35 years. He's won the Premier League ten times, the Champions League twice and a list of other pots too lengthy to list here. He's 67.
Rafa Benitez first took charge of a Real Madrid youth side in 1986, he's managed six clubs and won La Liga twice and the Champions League once. He's 48.
These are two distinguished men. Doyens of the game. At the very top of their profession. And still they cannot resist the temptation to argue like children who think they haven't got a big enough slice of cake.
'He's spent more money than me...no he's spent more money than me....But you've broken the transfer record...' blah, blah, blah. Frankly, it's quite pathetic.
You might call this mind games, but the fact of the matter is that it's a pissing contest between two men who should know better. This is the sort of argument that should be happening on the YourSay boards of this fine website, not by the managers of the two biggest clubs in England.
It's petty sniping of the most undignified kind, and one wonders why they're bothering. Instead of totting up his spend in the last five years, should Rafa Benitez not be revelling in probably the best domestic result in his time at Liverpool? And rather than responding, perhaps Ferguson should be addressing the problems raised by United's worst week of the season?
In some ways it's interesting, in that an amateur psychologist might conclude several things about both men's psyches.
It's possible that Benitez has something of inferiority complex, and is trying to convince us, Liverpool fans and his players that he is fighting against the odds, against a Goliath that could buy and sell his club if he wanted. Should Liverpool finish second he is trying to present that as a success, the idea that he is helpless against a rival of this size, and therefore winning the thing would be an even more incredible achievement.
In Ferguson it may show that he is the slightest bit rattled by Liverpool's resurgence, and that he genuinely feels threatened. Of course, the stubborn old sod could just find it impossible to resist a retort. His desire to have the last word is all-consuming, and he might be totally relaxed and confident in his team's ability to finish the job they have started.
Alternatively, it could just be two grown men squabbling who should know better.
We have a potentially fascinating title race to look forward to, and the two managers would perhaps be best advised to direct attention to that, rather than their balance sheets.
