Hi everyone, I am taking home my Min Schnauzer home this Sat morning. I plan to toilet train using the crate method ie put it into a crate and take it out regularly to pee and poop on newspapers.

Wat do I do when I am not at home ? I was told that I should not let it soil the crate. Also what should I use to remove the urine smell should there be an accident ? The puppy shoukld be about 7 weeks old when i take it home

Alternatively should i just start potty training during the long school holidays when my kids are home everyday ?

Thanking all u "sifus" in advance

hi....rkkyong~ congrate for being a ms owner smile.gif
u can get playpen....train him there... get a toilet tray( i m using that on my poodle and it's works well)
to eliminate the pee smell, u can dilute the floor cleaner with water into a sprayer...spray the part that he pee on and wipe it off with clean cloth....other alternative is mix vinegar with water into sprayer n spray that area....vinegar makes a good smell remover and antibacteria agent.

anything just msg here....lots of ms owners here willign to help...but make sure u make your own study 1st before you ask ya tongue.gif

jason

thanks for the advice. i have read about the vinegar but kind of hesitant to use it for the crate as the dog might find it smelly. wat do u think ?

i know there are commercial sprays but if can save $$$, why not ? the pet shop said can use clorox but tot tat is kind of too toxic

in any event, i will use the vinegar for the floor in the event of accidents

i actually read up books and articles on the net . makes me more confused leh rclxub.gif

for me, during the start. i tried to use the more "Ang Moh" way of teaching Ramses. no beating, just scold. but i realise that most of the time it doesn't work.

so i introduced the "Asian" way of teaching. the same way how my dad teached me. with rotan and beatings. true enough, it works better.

The asian way of teaching works but be careful, your dog might fear u when he does something wrong. which means he/she might hide somewhere (under table/sofa/etc) when u wanna scold him or even when u say "NO". they will be conditioned into thinking that NO is equal to a beating... so bettere run before kena whack..

Agree with you. Punishment is NOT the way of training a puppy... You should use positive reinformation methods. Reward when he is doing the right thing. Ignore him when he is doing the wrong thing.

If your dog has done something wrong like biting newspaper and etc then you only found out after like 30 minutes, if you punish him. it is useless. The reason is he does not know why you punish him. If you caught him red-handed, and you us stern voice like "Shhh...", with stern look at him. He will know that what he did was wrong.

If you do not have time to take care of your dog, put it on leash, crate or playpen. If you give him a chance to run around, make sure that you keep an eye on him.

If you give him a chance to run around while you are busy and he does something wrong, it is handler's problem - Your problem. DO NO punish your dog!
