Hi everybody,

I try searching but can't seem to find a definite answer. Was hoping somebody with experience can advice.
I am planning to buy a camping stove (those light weight 100g-200g) type that screw on to a gas canister (butane/propane mix). Still unsure how many gas canister is needed for a 7 days Gunung Tahan trip.

1. From my search it seems that these camping stove burn at 150g/hr. The gas canister seems to be 230g each. Is it a simple calculation that on average each canister will last about 90mins?

2. How many minutes of cooking on average per day? I was assuming 5min breakfast for coffee / maggi, no lunch cooking, then maybe 15-20mins dinner cooking (rice, meat etc). So one canister will last 2-3 days?

3. Where else to buy a compatible screw on gas canister? I live in Lumut and don't have easy access to outdoor stores (evergreen etc). I can't find gas canister in Aeon, Giant.

Thank you so much in advance. Any info / advice very much appreciated.

Screw on gas canister is quite difficult to find outside KL. Even inside KL. The next best is campinzg gas canister which is puncture type.

The most common type is the long canister butane gas. Which you can buy from some hardware shop, giant, Tesco etc. Not difficult to find in lumut, manjung, sitiawan or air tawar.

The type of stove is the standing type with a hose and adaptor. Just get it online from ebay or aliexpress.

For hour usage, try it for a canister. See how long it burn. It also depend how big the fire to control. Your meal is not just cooking. Boiling water also. Put it at average 15min cooking for a meal. You should be able to estimate the usage by this way.

Please bring back the empty canister. Don't throw it anywhere in the jungle.

Another stove you can consider is the liquid fuel stove. Fuel stove use kerosene, petrol etc. So it is much easy to find. 1bottle 887ml can use for 224min+. That is 224/15min= 15meal or 5days. But liquid stove require to prime (simple skill) to operate. And maintenance to keep it run properly.

Liquid fuel stove don't produce rubbish like gas canister. The liquid bottle can be reuse again.

I m actually looking for the screw in gas canister too. Haven't really look for it. The stove I order is the smallest and lightest in the world.

Hi Ozak, thanks for your reply. I also just bought the 25g Titanium stove. So wanted to find a screw on canister. Wonder why so difficult to find. Going to try call Evergreen and Outdoor Adventure. Otherwise, might use those taller canister and build some rock/wood around it to keep it steady.
Haven't research on fuel stove with kerosene / alcohol. Seems messy to set up.

There is few way. Check this youtube. --> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvxQYoFyS3A...ObTGYAnV7Ev6-_Q

Difficult to find is because it is very expensive. Not mistaken, cost almost RM50. So the market is small. All using the cheap butane gas canister.

Not mistaken, I saw a few shop here got sell. But can't confirm. I plan to go down and check this few week.

I want to buy the smallest size canister. If can't get it here, I will get it from overseas. Like spore.

Ya, liquid fuel is messy to handle. It have good and bad. I prefer liquid stove as it more reliable.

BTW, taller canister need an adaptor to connect the stove. Both have different connection.

Hello again everybody,

What kind of shoes would you guys recommend for Gunung Tahan? Some say get the hardware shop rubber tapper shoes. Some say branded good quality sports shoes.

I have a Keen Voyager mid. Its very light and comfy, have used it for various tracking in NZ and Australia (of course its mostly dry/muddy and no river crossing like Malaysian jungle). How this be advisable? Switch to sandals for river crossing?

If you comfort with the Keen, than stick with it. Keen is good enough.

From my experience, just take out your shoe and socks when river cross. There is no point even you wear the kampong addidas. Your socks will get wet too if you don't take it out. You will not comfort with the long hike and possible get blister.

You need a real hiking shoe with a rough profile. Not sports shoe.

Rm24/canister? I'm thinking 2 might be enough for one person for seven days Gunung Tahan?

Why are you looking for so small 100g ?

The cheapest I can find is from outdoor center for rm16/pcs. But still expensive than liquid fuel.

Probably you need 2 cans. 7days is quite long. And it is for safe in case run out and thing gone wrong.

I want the smaller size for

1) for shorter trip.
2) smaller size and light weight. Every gram count for hiking.
3) easy to keep and compact

Just like this picture. I can keep the canister in the mug. Save space in my bag.

I intend to get Klymit Static V sleeping pad and Naturehike cycling ultralight silicone one man tent for my bicycle bikepacking. Both are small, lightweight and affordable price.

Anyone care to give opinions on both items? Other brands to recommend. I know MSR tents and Thermarest sleeping pads are good but they are expensive.

Thanks in advance. HAPPY CAMPING..
