Yesterday's tournament was great! Props to Alan for making this tournament!

The most awesome thing is you can see all the players improve drastically those 2 days! I was doing really well during the first day's warmup session, but toward the qualifiers I start feeling the pressure...and subsequently getting my ass handed to me eventually during quarterfinals by Kian Chuan's Blanka. Guess there were so many Zangiefs that tournament everyone already knew all his tricks by the time the second day came.. My crossups, tick-to-piledriver and random EX banishing fist don't work anymore sad.gif

Really enjoyed myself those 2 days! There should be more like this and I look forward to it if there is. Tekken 6:BR is coming up in October *hint hint*

Since you brought it up Rawfish, I'll just a give a bit of Balrog info:

When you want to Ultra someone in the air (juggle or counter hit), the easiest way for most damage is that you miss the second hit completely regardless, regardless of what the first hit was.

So it's PPKKK or KPKKK.  The reason you miss the second hit is that when it hits, you either hit up to the 4th hit and miss the 5th (the most damaging one) or you hit only the first two hits and then the guy falls down BEHIND Balrog, which is really bad.

He can also actually Ultra from more positions than what I showed in the tournament, but I couldn't react fast enough on a pad.
*
Easiest way I found for this is to wait for the first 2 hits (2nd hit will whiff) then tekan the kick button all the way until the ultra ends. Also don't forget to do the headbutt by charging down-back , then up-back +punch to maintain the charge for the combo to Ultra.

I believe he was the younger of the Leong brothers. He was very good with Ryu and his timing to juggle and execute Matsu Hadouken was excellent. Couldn't get any better during the mini tournament
*
Damn my little brother got all the glory huh..well, I can understand..his focus cancel to Ultra is pretty slick..I've been on the business end of that trick so many times against him.. i think he's the only guy in the tourney that can do that.

Sounds good... my internet connection really blows so I can't sign in to PSN, can sign in also get shitty one-bar connection; this could really help a lot.

And on the next tourny please don't make it arcade stick only. I will never get used to arcade sticks no matter how much I try. And trust me I tried.. Prefer the good ol' trustworthy joypad to pull off my stuff. Too used to it.

My bro's interested in getting one of those joysticks though. How much does one cost?

To me the matter of using a pad or stick is more of a preference. Whatever works for the player. I'm a pad user because I'm a cheapskate and I've grown into it to the point I can fight with the best with it. I don't plink or doubletap, I can work my game just fine without it, so why waste 500 bucks.

Anyway I get where the organizers are going with this. It's a marathon, and it's important not to lose time changing d-pad to stick and back again, that's the real reason why pad got banned. I don't blame Alan or anyone for this, but too bad as it barred the casual player and pad users from performing their best or even try playing as they're not used to sticks. But I guess there will be future tournaments that won't limit us next time, yeah?

But looking back another thing is it's retarded that they reduced the rounds to just 1 round. I know it;s a marathon and time's a factor but man..it's not SF4 with just 1 round.

Wow shit this makes me wished I stayed longer. What is this about?

I think it's about time I took up a fighting stick. I can't stay out of events like this forever, I feel like I'm missing out. Anyone got a spare one to sell me cheap? tongue.gif

3) It was a Claw player. Same guy that was the only Vega player in the midvalley tourney. Name escapes me though.

Nice time at the minitourney. Everyone was great and lots of great moments, especially that one heartstopping Balrog-Ryu exchange. And Rawfish really nailed it, his Sagat combos gave me a lot of trouble. Desmond we really need to play again sometime!

yeah dude.. we really need to fight. you and Aiman are probably one of the best Balrogs I've seen yet, but unfortunately (or fortunately? biggrin.gif ) didnt get to fight both of you.

Mad props to Alan for setting this up. Lots of non-PSN people I don't know so its a breath of fresh air.

Nice job adding these on Youtube Alvin, appreciate it.

Kinda wierd looking at my own videos. On hindsight I do get too reckless when I reached the semis, I think that's what got me killed in finals. I play semi-defensive when I face Sagats but you can see me rushing and getting hit. Tourney jitters I guess. Also need to remember to tech throw. Very embarassing that I'm so bad at this considering I'm using a grappler. sweat.gif

Yeah mike I got the shoutout, collected my joypad today. If you think my Gief was decent you've seen nothing yet. If you want to face an even ganas Zangief add keen2keen on PSN. I can safely admit he has a much better Gief than mine and the best I've ever faced. I swear he has psychic powers.

Hi Alan

Please refer to Desmond's post (#649) at the SF4 PS3 thread here:

http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1082266/+640

I think he highlighted 100% of what the majority of our opinions are about the tournament in that post. Please send what he said to Sony and let those guys know smile.gif

haha wah you guys are quick to take advantage yeah?

Caaan..i don't mind actually, havent got any games yet though. All my old ones still at my old house but I lazy to drive and get it. Still toying around with remote play and uploading music and video on it. Will bring it on our next meet and will continue to do so if you guys want. Someone bring UMD games la if not nothing to do with it when I bring it .

Wah the finals videos really highlight how I mess things up.

-2 missed EX hand after lariat trade
-1 missed spd
-1 messed up link
-+9000 unnecessary lariats

Sigh...

Desmond, you got everything highlighted perfectly. I think every organizer should seriously look at your list as a blueprint for any tournament. Other than that:

-set time to 99 for all rounds not infinite or 60 or anything else, while time should be a strategy tool in SF, the time should not be too short to a point where it can be easily abused.
-set quarterfinals and above to best of 3 rounds & best of 3 matches, like japan/us tourneys and have losers/winners brackets. We will see a lot of fun and drama that way. Pools can be normal single best of 3s.
-More than 1 character can be used per player for any match.. should add more fun than not. And, Seth.

Also, if street fighter tournies grow to a large phenomenon locally (for now lets stick to the basics desmond highlighted)

-organize tournament Malaysia-scale
-invite international players for exhibition matches like the Singaporeans/Americans did. We can start by inviting Singaporeans.
-big screens like gamestop tournament in US
-lets invite retired Malaysian veterans who are not participating in-match to give colour commentary along with the organizer's emcee.

And after that, we take over the world.

And those I played during the casual sessions, GGs guys! leongteng5, I still dunno how to fight Gief. Can't give you a good fight. My apologies.
*
You did very impressive man, I had fun fighting you. As for how to defeat Gief using Balrog, Aiman has perfected the way. I didn't beat him once in our 10 matches together; I cant counter his jump-ins, I can't cross him up effectively and I can't get around his pokes. Ask him to teach you.

I wish they could think like us. It's sad for me to predict that T6 as 'the next big thing for Sony' will totally result in no more or very minimal SF events once T6 comes out. Having a good feel from my participation in all their sponsored-tourneys... they really don't care and they are only doing what's right in the corporate world. Enough has been ranted and written to share this feedback to them.

It's always an uphill battle for independent communities like Outpost & ourselves to have larger-scale tourneys without sponsorship - there's always this ceiling getting in the way. Well, just like playing SF, we really need to do more and work harder to be better at the game!
*
This is to be expected. But I still don't think SF4 will be left on the sidelines forever as a result. It will be just for the launch but after that I think the fanbase will still be too strong for future organizers/sponsors to let up. I mean look at the turnout for recent events. They're not that stupid. At least I hope so. Tekken 6 is another type of fighting game altogether anyway, and in terms of what is the best 2d vs game in the market, It's SF4 hands down no contest (sorry Blazbluers and KOFers) and I think everyone knows that.

Gief cannot do anything to horizontal blanka ball post-block, so the way to counter it is to guess when it's coming and:

1) lariat mid roll (doable by reaction if ball is done fullscreen)
2) jump back mk mid roll
3) predict where it's going to land and jump back or straight up and spd/ultra once you land next to Blanka as he finishes his roll

all prediction work so very dangerous for Gief

uhhhh man.. just came from practice. Can't do it so far. My EX green hands always falls short inches from Blanka's face but not hitting him. Either that or my step-kick comes out. I don't even see any effects at my attempts at kara-ing. Usually you'll see the beginning animation of the kara move right? Like 3rd strike? Need to practice more lah

Nice meeting you man. I saw that you were from the DARK SIDE, any plans on converting to a stick soon or do you just want to be on pads?

lol you got it all wrong man. We're of Jedi. We are PADawans icon_idea.gif

@onikari: I remember you dude. You and bigmac (kodanshi) did a good job representing Abel. Can't wait to fight you again. That tiebreaker was a nailbiter.

lol. that wouldnt work. there was that other sagat player that also used pad. So there were at least 3 of us.

You can SPD Boxer out of his charge punches. LOL!

I can only do that when he's at least 3 quarters screen distance. If not its hard to react to. Or I guess my reactions are pretty lousy. Balrog's real threat against Zangief is that crouching HK or jumping HK. Couldn't find a way around them last time I played.

@Zangief82: please add me my PSN id is at my sig. I badly need practice against mirror matches.
