Nice to have you and mDinie. I like to see Cammy getting represented. Though this tournament may not be the best example of the KL scene due to the faults that you and Alvin highlighted spot-on. Like Alvin said, try coming to Alan's tournies next time he organizes one, that's a good representation. Though I think its good that Sony Centre at Mines actually organized this, despite its many shortcomings, which I hope they learn from.

Best player here?? haha.. you, dude, are badly misinformed. Thanks for the compliment.

About the tourney: I had a blast. But I cant help but think if the tourney actually allowed sticks, I wouldn't have this much of a chance of winning. Bravo to the usual stick players (Desmond, Alvin, BigMac, Alan and the rest) to show up on pad matches, something I didn't do when the situation reversed on megamall. I'm glad I won anyway, I don't win much competitions so this is pretty much made my day. Desmond we'll have our real rematch on the next good tourney!

(Dudes, is it normal for PSP these days to come not bundled with any USB wire or memory card even? Wah Sony so damn stingy these days!)

It was really nice to meet the both of you, and Sam. You guys did very well actually and I think you are just not used to the pads and tournament setup. You should really come to Outpost Cafe @ Cineleisure (E@Curve now) next Sunday 2nd August as it'll be a closer and friendlier environment for SF match-ups. That's where Alan hosts our monthly get-togethers and a good place for both advanced and new players to join in the fun and develop better gameplay.

As for the comment on players in the recent Penang tournament, I'm sure they have their own standards of play, and somewhere out there, there ARE really good people too who could not make it on that day. Many years ago during the KL SF Zero (2 and 3) and SF III (New Gen and 2nd Impact) tournaments, Ipoh, JB and Penang were represented. All had their own style of play and it was so exciting to learn from each another. I lost contact with all of them and so did TristanX too, our resident old-school champ. Penang had this Ryu with extremely fast reflexes. I kid you not that you could never jump in as you eat a shoryuken each time without fail. He controls space real well and exploits the fast hurricane kick when you play fireball, standing footsie attacks with him. His shinkuu hadouken super is also on fast reaction. He is THAT good, we still talk about him til this day - so Penang.... represent! smile.gif

Dinie's the Ryu player, and the (only?) Rufus was another guy. Did not get to speak or fight to him, but I somehow notice his gameplay to conclude he's a stick player as well as he missed so many golden opportunities.

Ok, the GOOD feedback on The Mines' tournament:
• Very well-organized event
• Rope cordon were used to separate the crowd from the contestants' area
• Played on 40" Bravia Vs. No eye-strain nor lag noticed
• Scoring system clear, and the notebook was even routed to a Bravia for all to see
• Attentive staff
• Interesting MC
• The customary cosplay Ryu and Chun Li. I like their presence and shouts out loudly this is an SF-event
• It's free
• Door gift (t-shirts and towels) given to participants
• Proper SF4 tags were printed and distributed (hung around the neck)
• Decent prizes to go around for the top 8 winners

Now for what I feel needs to be highlighted:

• Very badly-organized Street Fighter event. Many opportunities to make this better.

• Event held in a (IMHO) tight and confined space. Aside from participants, they should know that fighting games make good crowd attraction, especially on a busy weekend. They should capitalize on this and use the mall's concourse area to stage the event to draw a better crowd and sell their brand better (though there may be budgeting or setup challenges for this).

• No choice to bring your own stick. This severely brings great handicap to players (example, a likely-to-be EX-Sony supporter like myself). Bringing a stick does not guarantee the user the championship. It's skill. This is what a tournament is about, an open challenge of skill. Best man (or woman) wins. Since this is an open invitation (public), you leave the options open as well. Do not limit or restrict the capacity for a player to play his/her best. If bringing sticks shy the public away, may I then ask you to look at today's results. People will definitely sign-up no matter what they see being used to play, to at least gauge how well they fare and try their luck at the prize. People will also leave, due to the need to be somewhere else, or getting beaten by the better pad player. Or as some people I met quoted, "good game, bro. takde joystick tak best la *balik*".

• No choice to bring your own pad. This is acceptable, if only the pads were in good condition. Sadly they were not. Mike, a good Abel player is someone who seldom complains on hardware fault. He lost unconvincingly and shared that the pad had a worn-out d-pad. By that time it was too late to inform the organizers as it was already at the knock-out stage and we had little evidence to prove.

• No choice to customize the settings on the pad. So I decided to join the pad tournament, which makes myself seem like joining the Special Olympics (no disrespect to pad players, you know your game and are better with it, it's just like I am useless on it). I tried hard to make the temp transition, and it seemed ok as long the PPP/KKK buttons are mapped from the right shoulder buttons to the right ones). To my horror (the rules were not posted online, and only announced/published at the venue), even button customization is strictly banned too. I can understand the banning of mapping Focus Attacks or Throws together, but this....???

• No choice to use certain characters. No, we're not talking about Seth (in fact, Seth has weak attacks and defence - no more reason to ban him). There's 3 PS3 setups.

Setup #1: Fei Long, Akuma, Gouken, Seth, Rose, Dan and Gen are not unlocked
Setup #2: Everyone unlocked
Setup #3: No one unlocked. Default arcade characters.

So anyone who uses these characters need to pray hard that they are assigned to the correct machines.

• 2-round games, even in the semi-finals. Only finals and 3rd-placing decider went to best-of-5-rounds

• 60 second games. This was too fast and encouraged plenty of people just hitting hard then jumping back to wait for time-out. But anything you say, dear organizers.

• I have no qualms about the score keeper. He initially interrupted people in the midst of battle to ask for their tag number and current score, but after feedback he was more thoughtful and sensitive. Thank you for this.

True, it is your event and you have ultimatum over the rules. The keyword here is "choice". I have a choice to enter this tournament or simply stay at home and stay contended. You need to do your homework before organizing an event like this, or you will definitely make yourselves look bad. This message may not mean anything to you as it's just from some guy in cyber-space. But I hope this is reflected upon and well-taken as a very honest, no-frills one - as I know, you're looking towards setting up an online community as evident with PlayStation Friends @ Facebook. So you need to start to listen to people within this channel.

Thank you for the event, overall I enjoyed myself as I had a good company of friends but am questioning the effectiveness of your corporate office's leadership team, over yesterday's event.

Thank you so much for welcoming me! I was initially a little scared about going over to KL for a tournament as I do not know anyone but it opened my eyes a little about how things are organized here. I will help to give some feedback to the people in Penang on how to organize a better SF4 tournament in Megamall Pinang on the 30th of August as I happen to know the organizers. Do let me know more about it too k?

I will probably be dragging some of my other friends to the gathering as well as they were the one who taught me how to play. Do post up gathering updates here k? I will be officially shifting down to KL in August so its such a good opportunity to train up for tournaments. Haha! smile.gif

pikacu:

Yes, I am the Cammy user. I also used Sagat (which I think was in slightly better form yesterday than my usually aggressive Cammy). Nice to meet you!

mDinie:

This is Don Don who played Ryu and a Rufus (only in later rounds for fun). He is pretty much a high potential player and he taught me a lot of stuff about Ryu (since he seems to be the favourite in most competitions!). Sam is "the Claw" @ Vega who is so happy that he was finally able to execute Bloody High Claw with ease after going to the competitions! He is also my mentor and sensei who taught me how to play SF4 a month ago and gave me an hour intensive training before my first tournament. Definitely someone I respect as well! smile.gif I will probably drag him to post up in LYN soon.

rawfish:

I agree that there are also really good players in Penang as well. Perhaps all of you have different playing styles but I agree that there are many good players out here in Malaysia. In Penang, you can see the usual flowchart Ryu-Ken-Akuma line up so its interesting to see a different set of characters been used here. I noticed a lot more Zangief's than in Penang (usually only Jason Sim plays a very good Zangief!) and there is also the excellent Abel who managed to create the first perfect of the day with Ryu. I was literary stunned when I saw him execute all his moves at ease. There were two notably good Bison's that day (You are definitely included as one of them!) which is also rare in Penang. Sam, as usual, likes to use Vega which made him the only good Vega for yesterday's tournament. The standard of people using Ryu yesterday is simply amazing! Most of you have such good timing and the ability to throw out nice combo's. Good job!

I already gave my feedback on the event in my previous post though I totally agree with what rawfish said. The event was in a rather tightly spaced area (perhaps due to budget constrains as mentioned!). I remembered my first tournament was held in the concourse area of Gurney Plaza, Penang and that definitely attracted more supporters!

I am definitely agreeing with rawfish on the character selection part! I was so shocked when I first saw that there was no Cammy available on any consoles (in the beginning). When I complained to the organizers about this, one of the staff just shrugged me away and told me, "Too bad. I guess you have to play with whatever is offered." That already broke half my spirit and put me at a disadvantage as there is a possibility that I may not be able to use my main character (Cammy). They should just standardize everything by unlocking every single character

That all my comments for now as I just woke up (yawn!) and I will have to travel back to Penang again tomorrow. I seriously had fun and I hope that you guys from KL would be able to join the fun in Penang this coming Merdeka.

Some of you might have noticed there was a group of us,8 to be exact, few lasting until the Finals. We had a really great time during the tournament, it was a lot better than what we expected, granted it could have been better but it was a fantastic first try. I'd say the joypad only rule was kind of an advantage for us, as we have no fight sticks and most of us joined because of this XD. But we do understand the frustration it brings to the more veterans stick players, as we do agree too, fighting games are meant to be played on sticks.

Kudos to LeongTeng, you beat 3 of our top guys including the Ken and Rufus user, the Rufus user especially was like "crap, bad enough fighting a newbie Zangief, let alone an experienced one" XD

Edit:
Btw want to ask you PS3 SF4 gurus, does either Hori Real Arcade Pro3 PS3 and MADCATZ TE PS3 usable with the PC version of SF4? I know the Xbox version does, and i'm a xbox360 player, but most my frens and the studio is using PS3. I'd like to be able to play at home on my PC and bring it to the studio or my friend's house too.

HRAP 3 is compatible with all devices including PC and PS3, TE is definitely compatible to PS3 but i heard there maybe some issues with PC depending on the motherboard chipsets.

welcome to the SF4 community wink.gif

Sounds like you guys had a blast.

Please inform me of transportation more than 12 hours in advance next time. XD

What was the character selection spread like? A million Ryukens or a nicer spread and were there any decent Boxers/Hondas? smile.gif

____

Quist Cammy, are you and Claw friend + Ryufus friend attending the next gathering?

honky, same question to you except it addresses you and your group of 8. smile.gif
