Um... etsy,not so sure with my bro.His comp's been fking up lately. Maybe you can help out,his problem is that his pc lags terribly when he plays tf2 after a certain a mount of time.this could be either 5 minutes or all the way to 2 hours,before it lags.

His pc specs are :

windows xp service pack 3
pentium 4 3.2 ghz (yes its pentium 4)
Nvidia 9600 gts
4 gb ram

His pc can easily support games like cod 4 modern warfare on it and play red alert 3 beautifully. He has never had a prob with tf2 till recently. The lag im talking about is framerate lag. All of a sudden his screen gets slow and characters just seem to fly all over the map,jsut as how you would see in latency lags,but we know it isnt latency thats causing this.

We first thought it could be a case of memory leakage so we got the program called "ram Idle" which supposedly stops leakage.guess what?it didnt work :S is my bro's pc just getting to its retirement age?

just a couple of things to check curry. is the lag there if you don't press the keyboard or move the mouse? you can also check this by simply playing some music and randomly pressing A-S-D-F over and over. if the music lags, then the problem is the IO chip.

or the capacitors around the IO chip area, which would actually be my guess. if you do indeed get the lag while using my testing method, then you'll need to open up the chassis and see if the capacitors on the motherboard have any dirt like substance on the top, which would mean leaky caps.

but i'm getting ahead of myself, so i'll wait for the test results tongue.gif

Heya strife,thx for trying to troubleshoot my prob. Ok,i did as you asked and here's what i found out.

When in tf2: My bro is in the respawn right,and he doesnt move anything,doesnt type or move the mouse. People who died,respawned in front of him and moved out, all lagged.

As for your lil experiment with the music and alhpabet spamming,there doesnt seem to be an effect.Like,playing music or not, the alphabets seem to type at the same speed. Not much noticeable difference.

Also,we both cant seem to connect to steam today,wut gives?:S

hmm... actually the results of the experiment are more dependent on how the music plays tongue.gif but since he lags in the respawn room, i doubt its the caps. my guess is the update has done something thats causing this lag. this has happened a number of times with a friend of mine. so what you could try is to update your drivers and see if that does any good.

as for connecting to steam, i blame screamyx as usual.

Hmmm.... Ok,its embarrassing to admit this but my bro's comp works best when it hasnt been updated.I know,its preposterous because updates are supposed to make stuff work better. Maybe i could try and get newer updates but as of this moment, his drivers are dated to 2005. ALL drivers. tongue.gif Never had a prob till now though :S. will keep trying and keep you posted.

New update,new problem:

Today itself,i found that when i turn on my bro's pc, nothing comes up on the screen. I gotta restart and hope each time that i do,the problem will go away. Oh,in order to restart the comp,i have to plug out its power cord.I cant get it to turn off the normal way.(Holding the power button for a few seconds) Tell tale signs that its going broke? :S

Ah,now i found something wrong thats affecting the mouse. Apparently when i hover my bro's mouse to a file,like how you would check a file's size without right clicking and choosing "properties" on it, the cursor will keep blinking,like how you open up programs and stuff. Also,one annoying thing has been repeating itself voer and over for a while now,th emouse keeps disconnecting itself and reconnecting over and over again. Its freakin annoying! could this be that IO thingy you were talking about strife?

@cheef
Thanks for the steam connection tips man.Hope to see you there in the scrimms this weekend biggrin.gif

@curry:
The recent Steam update has affected framerates and still has. I found out about this when I tried googling a solution to my own problem. And, the framerate does drop especially when encountering pyros (flame on) and a large group of people all smack together.

However, the extensive problems you're reporting may be showing signs of an aging hardware. And yes, my 7900GS driver problem was solved by reverting to a driver released in 2005/2006. The new ones are crap - I'm getting an ATI next time.

Anyway, I'd suggest cleaning up the insides of the computer:
1. Vaccum.
2. Clean the heatsinks.
3. Dust off the fans and case.

Or, I'd probably unplug hardware and test 1-by-1. Then, once I (maybe) identified the hardware, I'd swap it with a similar part from another computer then test. But yeah, tedious process when you can't really tell.

@strife:
Thanks for following up with them. smile.gif

But internet connection no lag to anywhere else also :/

And about the tourney,sry about that etsy but i've made it clear earlier that my bro and i seriously game as far as online scrimms only. If it involves us using our time,money and effort just to go play a game tourney then im sorry but we will never be able to make it. Unless its in penang itself.

Im not saying that i cant be bothered giving a shit for professional gaming but under our circumstances,we cant.Besides we beleive there are other more beneficial things we can do with that time,money and energy spent smile.gif Sry once again etsy. Although i have to say this, i will be receiving an offer to study in monash uni sunway kl soon so i will be in kl for the duration of 2009 and perhaps well into 2011 (depending on if i wanan take my masters of commerce there or not). so, if i am in kl when there is a tourney,count me in for sure! biggrin.gif

i had connection problems quite some time ago..
i tried alot of solutions but it just wont connect..
what i did was i uninstall steam and deleted everything..
then downloaded a fresh install of steam and the games..
with my streamyx 1mb line its not that long to get everything back up n running.. more then half a day to download back everything again but it was worth it.. the download speed was quite fast.. around 90kbps-120kbps..

Im trying out your advice now freestyler smile.gif Btw since we're having 2 scrimms this weekend,why not you join us and get yourself promoted to lyn++? biggrin.gif

Added on February 7, 2009, 10:05 amHmmm guys,depending on how my steam acts up,i may or may not be able to join you on your scrimms. This is because ever since the whole of yesterday and today,my steam cant get online. My bro's steam can,but mine cant. I havent a clue why and i've already downloaded a fresh new version of steam after uninstalling everything. (i made a backup of my steamapps).

one other thing,if my steam does connect,the icon will appear in the taskbar (beside your clock etc ,bottom right of your screen). Nothing else comes up,if i right click on it and choose an option like "store", "games," etc,the icon will disappear and steam shuts itself off. WTF?!

would love to but i just dont have the knowledge to play scrims.. it would be my 1st time if i do join! so i think i should participate more in your training sessions first before joining your scrim matches.. i dont want to give lyn++ bad rep.. tongue.gif

regarding steam problems..i am having one myself.. my steam has been logged on for a few days.. i havent restart my pc during the same duration.. and this morning when i tried running tf2 it says game unavailable.. i had to restart steam a couple of times before managing to connect to a tf2 game.. sweat.gif

Yo dudes just wondering if you guys felt any difference to the crits ingame after the latest update?

According to VALVE, they have changed how the crit system works as to make it less random and more towards rewarding skill instead.

If you haven't checked an article on their blog that explains this in more detail, you can do so by clicking >HERE<.

However, my last question is will this new crit system be usable for competitive play level? Will it be viable to turn crits back on for tournament play? Your thoughts ...
