Maltese need higher maintenance fees than shihtzu (whitening shampoo, conditioner, spray). Shihtzu can goes with whatever shampoo. Every dog have their own problem, is depends on how u take care of it. Both prone to skin problem, eye problem, etc. I own a shih tzu, so I know. So far, my dog is a maltese, now 1 year old, didnt have any issue like u said... Not all shih tzu can goes with whatever shampoo. Some are skin sensitive so only natural shampoos are good to go with that dogs. Yes, maltese do need whitening shampoo because maltese only came with white coat (almost) but its different with shih tzu. As you can see shih tzu varies in coat color, mostly you can see white/brown mix or white/black and rarely you will find pure white shih tzu. For shih tzu with mix color, for show breeders or owners who intend to keep their color shine as it is, they will need to buy a whitening shampoo to use on white coat and color enhance shampoo (black/brown (red)) to use on the second color. The breed it self has a very thick coat so those who want to keep long coat for its shih tzu the grooming maintenance and time is not easy. To keep a long coat maltese is a hard work itself but shih tzu is not an easy either cause their coat is thick and really need lots of grooming/maintenance to keep the long coat looks silky and smoothly |

Just found this tered, my 3-year-old maltese - Babie
By the way, may I know any of the Maltese lovers here has problem with your dogs' skin? My dog suffers from fur lost, quite severe actually, on off for about a year already. Saw many vets, also not improving. Currently on long term low dose steroids..your advice is very much appreciated. This post has been edited by Bongpb: May 24 2012, 11:07 AM |

Not only the legs, it has very bad fur lost over the buttock and legs as she always scratches it, vet said its yeast infection, tried oral pills for many many months, NOT improving at all, then switched meds, also not working, so in the end i prescribed her steroid. (I'm medical doctor, heee), so actually i'm treating the dog myself. Steroids works like magic pills, buy just long term usage will have very bad side effects.Did the vet say what is the reason fot that? my dog skin ok but only she shed a lot.. |

Aiyo, so pity her, her face looks pale & tired..i think shud be ok to lose fur better than she consume medicine that got bad effect on her..if u dont mind, u can cut her fur short so it will grow new fur & wont look so terrible. |

QUOTE(sixtydee123 @ May 28 2012, 10:29 PM) im looking to buy a maltese from a breeder/pet store. but from what i've heard pet store arent recommended. can anyone introduce some breeder or a good pet store where i can get this darling from? normally we would strongly advice n recommend people to get their pets from responsible and reputable breeders.... petshops (whether physical shop or online shops selling multiple breeds of dogs) are not good sources as we dont know where their supply is from.... if u read The Star, few days ago you would have noticed that this issue was covered....for a good and healthy pup from a responsible and reputable breeder usually within the range of 1.8-2k for those without champion parents, above 2k and can go up till 3.5-4k for those pups with Champion parents (note, its not just lineage but parents themselves).... the difference with the term "lineage" and "parents" is that lineage can mean anywhere from parents till great grand parents.... of course there is also the factor of locally bred and the popular "taiwan bred aka mini".... basically, local bred are known to have larger size which normally is off standards, taiwan bred normally are within AKC written standard sizes but people are normally fooled into thinking its "mini" due to comparison with local breds.... people i know who have maltese get from White Palace, Frederf Maltese (fred_twh) or Kinzonu.... these 3 you can find in lowyat itself, while Frederf and Kinzonu have FB accounts.... another breeder you can seek via FB is Hollybelle.... Frederf, Kinzonu and Hollybelle are dog show handlers however they might have pet quality puppies from time to time.... responsible breeders are not afraid to show you their house where they keep their dogs, how are the living conditions of their pets.... you can feel free to ask them any questions regarding your pets regardless before or after purchasing because they want to make sure that their dogs are sold to good owners.... wish you well in your search of a wonderful maltese.... they are a great breed.... most importantly, getting from a responsible breeder gives you a safer assurance....
