The best explanation can be found here.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S60_platform

v2, v3, v5 are versions of the Nokia operating system which is based on Symbian... v9.2, v9,3 and v9.4 (S60 v5). (there is no S60 v4, they thought v4 is an unlucky number...)

Correct me if i'm wrong.

In this case, wouldn't all the nokia 5800s be a S60 V5. How come (if I'm not mistaken), some people said that their 5800 is V3

To find out my version I was told to type #0000#. Where do I type/ send this? I tried dialing with it but nothing happened.

its *#0000# not #0000#...urs should state V 11.0.008 as that is the most recent firmware release for the malaysian Ori sets....

Oh *#0000# works. Thanks.
Yes my version is V11.0.008

Thanks guys. For my next question. Is there anyway for my 5800 to watch youtube at a higher resolution. It renders the video to only 176x144 resolution.

Why not change topic and discuss if there's any interesting place to go for this CNY.. it's just next week anyway.. hehe

Else it'll be boring if every1 keeps asking the same Q and us regulars just replying them... too monotonous blink.gif

A good reminder here: Please backup up your phone from time to time.Or else it will be a disaster if your phone break down.

Oh ok.

This is the list of questions.

1) Is there anyway which I can improve the resolution of 176x144 watching youtube on my 5800?

2) Is the GPS on the phone free (as in no charge by the service provider)? I seem to be able to use the map plus positioning but the 5800 package said that it comes with a 7 day free trial for positioning. Quite confusing.

3) Does the phone brick (cannot start) easily? When I first got it, I used the nokia software updater and my 5800 immediately bricked. I sent it to the repair centre and they reflashed the phone for me. They told me not to use the updating software provided by the nokia CD. How am I going to update it next time?

4) Correct me if I'm wrong but my understanding is that at the moment the tube can only play .mp4
files smoothly. When I read about the 5800, a site said it supported many other file types but when I played them eg.avi, rmvb, they either lag or can't play at all. How come?

These would be the questions for the moment. Sorry if noob questions but I've been trying to get use to the phone for the last week. Thanks.

I'll answer those which I'm able to...

2) The service provider (data charges) usage for Nokia maps is free as long as you have already loaded the map into your phone using the map loader software, available on Nokia's website for free. However if you're using the Assisted GPS option then you may incur a few sen usage, this is just to help your phone get the positions.

Think you'll be paying data charges for Google Maps, tho.

3) Is there a new firmware update for the 5800 via NSU? Am not aware of this.

the 7 days is for navigation a.k.a the voice thing that says "turn left in 100 meters" if not, the positioning and maps are free...still waiting for someone to crack this thing cause I love it!

and there's no new firmware as of now so please don't try to update it...my phone doesn't brick when using NSU because I use the newest version as I didn't install from the DVD provided...it downloaded new ones for me xD

to be more precise

2) map positioning is totally FREE but navigation function just valid for 7 days, after that u need to purchase. A-GPS (assisted GPS) just a technology that help to position your GPS faster by the aid of operator network which will incur some data transfer charge varies according to your operator.

3) no new firmware update but u can re-flash your firmware if u wish smile.gif
