Hai, Im now pursuing Bachelor degree of biomedical science.
Due to lack of information on the courses, i actually filled in the 8 choices of ipta without much consideration.
I actually not really know or understand biomedical science this programme that moment, so i just put ONE as biomed out of the 8 choices.
my 1st choice was pharmacy, i wanna to be a pharmacist.
but unfortunately, i didn get my 1st choice as my pointer in matriculation was only 3.94.
yupe. i understand that pharmacy is a hot course. and with my pointer like that, won't be able to get pharmacy that easily. i expect that. but i just wanna give mysellf a try.

My hometown is only a small town. i've less friend or seniors who are studying in local u. After matriculation, i was really blur and don't know where to get the information on the courses. there is no education fair at my place. noboby can guide me at that moment. If i able to get information, maybe i can choose to study pharmacy course in private Uni such as UCSI which is not tht expensive as IMU instead of go to study a field which i really got no idea.

And now, im in 2nd year of biomed already. But i still dont know where and what is my future.
Can all of u help me out ? i really need suggestion and guidance from all of you especially those biomed grad.
is there another job oppurtunities other than just staying in lab? or become underwritter?

is a possibe a biomed grad can become a pharmacist by the other way? other than RETAKE a new degree of pharmacy?
or enter MBBS? or how?

thanks a lot.

biomed grad can't become a pharmacist. pharmacist needs to be licensed.

anyway, science is a broad field, there are many different career path beside just lab and underwriter.
you can always look into jobstreet or newspaper and see what type of job is available out there.

and don't restrict yourself either, just because you are a science graduate, doesn't means you can't get into job in business field.

if you really wanted to be in science field, there are pharmaceutical sales, medical lab equipment sales, product specialist, quality assurance, research & development n etc.

btw, i'm a biomedical graduate and now i'm in medical software engineering field.

wether to take mbbs or retake pharmacy, that really depends on what you what. have you thought of that? what type of career are you looking for?

Right then, I will answer your questions from your PM here.

My basic degree is BSc.Biomedicine (Hons) from MSU, Shah Alam. I joined Grad-entry MBBS in India under the MSU-IMS collaboration program with M.S Ramaiah Medical College in Bangalore. Total duration including a compulsory 1 year internship in India amounts to 4.5 years of study, only then the MBBS degree will be awarded.

The syllabus is packed with extra classes.

Subjects during my point of entry (MBBS, Phase II part-1) include: Pathology, Microbiology, Forensic Medicine, Pharmacology, Community Medicine, Medicine and Surgery. Additional classes in anatomy and physiology are given to further strengthen the basic knowledge in the mentioned subjects.

In India as told by my Professors, medical students are required to go, learn and do physical examinations on patients under the lecturer's supervision in the hospital starting from 2nd year as opposed to other medical program around the world which usually allows student to go to the hospital in 3rd year.

In my case, the students are required to practice history taking and basic physical examinations on patients in the hospital (especially in the Outpatient department) under the instruction and supervision of the lecturer.

The advantage of owning a BSc.Biomedicine / BSc.Biomedical Science qualification is having the suitable foundation to continue study in medicine / pharmacy / dentistry in graduate entry programs.

http://www.msu.edu.my/v6/index.php (MSU)
http://ims.msu.edu.my/ (MSU-IMS)
http://msrmc.ac.in/ (M.S Ramaiah Medical College)

Some of my BSc.Biomedicine batch mates have also entered AIMST and Cyberjaya medical college, but then they have to join the normal 5 years program. Some have also went to do a 4-years Grad-entry medicine (MD) in Poland under MSU-ISEP program.

http://www.msu.edu.my/v6/isep.php
http://www.wum.edu.pl/english/ (Medical University of Warsaw)

Otherwise, if you decided not to further your studies, you can choose a variety of health-care related jobs, eg; Medical Lab Tech, Lecturer for DMLT students, Medical Underwriter, Medical Sales Representative, Science officer U41 (Gov.Service), Misc. job in Pharmaceutical industry and so on.

I hope that answers some of your questions. If you need further clarification, do not hesitate to ask.

If it is not recognized by the government,is that means u can't work in government hospital?

What's the job scope of product specialist and quality assurance?
yupe, i ever thought of that. Because i really don't know what secure job that i can actually do with a degree of biomed science in malaysia.
Many biomed grads end up as salesman, if not then further their postgrad.
For me, if want to further master, someone shouldn't just stop at the level of master, but have to continue at least to phd. Because only with phd then someone can be a uni lecturer. No point to stop at master level only.
How long would it takes to get a phd? For me, to get a phd, it really .. a long long long and hard hard hard journey.. i don't think i can cope with it.

May i know that u were biomed science or biomed engineering grad?
if u were biomed science grad, how could u involve in engineering field right now?

Currently there are around 400+ Malaysian students studying here in MSU-IMS MS Ramaiah Medical College. Most are JPA and MARA students with a minority of private students.

So, it would be most doubtful that the government and the Civil Service Department (JPA) would send students to an unrecognized college knowing that they have spent a lot for the sake of the students here. Tuition fees alone cost more than RM350K.

http://www.mma.org.my/html/recog_unis_india.html (As for M.S Ramaiah Medical College Recognition)

You can check the numbers of medical practitioners registered with MMC that have graduated from M.S Ramaiah Medical College below, just type "Ramaiah" in the "graduate from" area:

if your medical degree is not recognised for registration by the mmc, you CANNOT practice medicine.....period........you will need to do the backdoor way......sit for the qualification exam run by the universities on behalf of mmc........you have 3 attempts......

all msians MUST serve 3 years compulsory service with the gov.........if you do housemanship in msia, that will be another 2 years.......

i'm a biomed science grad. but since in malaysia, biomed engineer grad is in short supply. so they recruit me and provide training on the engineering field.

Of course you can...

Grad-entry programs are available all over the world nowadays. Below are some examples:

Graduate entry Pharmacy (Masters of Pharmacy and Doctor of Pharmacy)

University of Sydney - Masters of Pharmacy (Grad-Entry)

Ohio State University - Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD)

....

as for Grad-entry medicine......... just google it... they are everywhere....

Ei? here also you posted the same thing?

I suggest that you browse the local private medical schools in Malaysia first. They do accept science degree holders into their program but you will have to join along with the STPM/A-Levels/Matriculation/etc holders for the 5-years program.

generally speaking yes though I'm not aware of graduate entry Medicine around this parts. You would have to join the normal programme with pre-u,foundation etc. students.

nah not really. You can either join grad entry med, or get into a full mbbs/md course which runs for 5 years. I think the first grad entry med is coming up in Malaysia offered by John Hopkins.

Yes you can. But bear in mind, medical courses require you to have good result in order to enrol in it. The minimum pointer should be at least 3.0

What onelove89 said is that some medical programmes in countries such as the US and Canada are graduate-entry programmes, meaning you need to obtain a bachelor degree first before you can study medicine.

However, most countries like Malaysia, India and most of the European countries treat medicine as an undergraduate programme in which you can enter once you finished your pre-university, hence the term 'normal programme'.

Hope this helps. smile.gif

If u really want to do pharm,my suggestion is to drop the course u r taking nw and go ahead to private unis since wateva courses u take would affect ur future. If u take biomed scince,u still cn do medicine, dentistry, pharm as a second degree in msia. But,in msia,we dont hv graduate-entry type programme which means that u hv to spend anthr 5yrs for ur sec dgree. In some unis in aust and mostly all unis in USA that offer med are graduate entry.Unfornutaly,it is near to impossible to enter med school in USA.Perhaps u shud consider goin to aust instead
