Right then, I will answer your questions from your PM here.

My basic degree is BSc.Biomedicine (Hons) from MSU, Shah Alam. I joined Grad-entry MBBS in India under the MSU-IMS collaboration program with M.S Ramaiah Medical College in Bangalore. Total duration including a compulsory 1 year internship in India amounts to 4.5 years of study, only then the MBBS degree will be awarded.

The syllabus is packed with extra classes.

Subjects during my point of entry (MBBS, Phase II part-1) include: Pathology, Microbiology, Forensic Medicine, Pharmacology, Community Medicine, Medicine and Surgery. Additional classes in anatomy and physiology are given to further strengthen the basic knowledge in the mentioned subjects.

In India as told by my Professors, medical students are required to go, learn and do physical examinations on patients under the lecturer's supervision in the hospital starting from 2nd year as opposed to other medical program around the world which usually allows student to go to the hospital in 3rd year.

In my case, the students are required to practice history taking and basic physical examinations on patients in the hospital (especially in the Outpatient department) under the instruction and supervision of the lecturer.

The advantage of owning a BSc.Biomedicine / BSc.Biomedical Science qualification is having the suitable foundation to continue study in medicine / pharmacy / dentistry in graduate entry programs.

http://www.msu.edu.my/v6/index.php (MSU)
http://ims.msu.edu.my/ (MSU-IMS)
http://msrmc.ac.in/ (M.S Ramaiah Medical College)

Some of my BSc.Biomedicine batch mates have also entered AIMST and Cyberjaya medical college, but then they have to join the normal 5 years program. Some have also went to do a 4-years Grad-entry medicine (MD) in Poland under MSU-ISEP program.

http://www.msu.edu.my/v6/isep.php
http://www.wum.edu.pl/english/ (Medical University of Warsaw)

Otherwise, if you decided not to further your studies, you can choose a variety of health-care related jobs, eg; Medical Lab Tech, Lecturer for DMLT students, Medical Underwriter, Medical Sales Representative, Science officer U41 (Gov.Service), Misc. job in Pharmaceutical industry and so on.

I hope that answers some of your questions. If you need further clarification, do not hesitate to ask.

Em..May i know ur MBBS taken in india is recognized by Malaysia Government or not?
If it is not recognized by the government,is that means u can't work in government hospital?
Currently there are around 400+ Malaysian students studying here in MSU-IMS MS Ramaiah Medical College. Most are JPA and MARA students with a minority of private students.

So, it would be most doubtful that the government and the Civil Service Department (JPA) would send students to an unrecognized college knowing that they have spent a lot for the sake of the students here. Tuition fees alone cost more than RM350K.

http://www.mma.org.my/html/recog_unis_india.html (As for M.S Ramaiah Medical College Recognition)

You can check the numbers of medical practitioners registered with MMC that have graduated from M.S Ramaiah Medical College below, just type "Ramaiah" in the "graduate from" area:

Ei? here also you posted the same thing?

I suggest that you browse the local private medical schools in Malaysia first. They do accept science degree holders into their program but you will have to join along with the STPM/A-Levels/Matriculation/etc holders for the 5-years program.

CyberSetan sorry to dig up this old post and suddenly pop out a comment here. xD
anyways i am a biology lover. i love teaching and i also love labwork. it seems only fitting that i go for biomedical science right?
however i am skeptical about the job scope of this course. eg, are grads of this course in high demand in the teaching and medical lab world?
honestly income isnt really an issue to me as i know that i need to slowly work my way up the ladder and i really dont mind glue-ing my eyes to a microscope the whole day either.
what do you think?

Do dig up some more... by Googling Cybersetan and Biomedical science together....

CyberSetan mind giving me your personal opinion on these courses?
1)BSc(Hons) Biology with Psychology http://sunway.edu.my/university/fst/biology-psy
2)Bachelor of Science
http://www.monash.edu.my/study/undergradua...chelor-science/
3) any biomedical course out there in private universities in malaysia

i just finished a-levels and quite honestly i'm kinda lost on what to choose. i have asked for advice previously from other users on this website but i just wanted to get more opinions. I would really like to pursue a career as an academician in universities/colleges or like i said do labwork.
so what do you think? ><

I have been wondering why aren't many people interested in the Teaching profession... Its not like there is no career advancement in becoming a teacher. (B.Ed -> Masters Education -> PhD)..

If you are interested in teaching, try reading this...

Alright...

If you are interested purely in Genetics... you should apply for a BSc. Genetics (Hons).

Lets do it like this... ask yourself first firmly... what is it that you want to do?
Do you want to become a scientist? a University lecturer in science? a medical laboratory officer? a medical doctor?

Then we can proceed from there.

It is not only in Sri Lanka that Biomedical graduates having difficulty securing suitable jobs related to their degree, Malaysia as well.

In Malaysia, Biomedical science graduates are often hired as Science Officers in government laboratories or as a Medical Laboratory Technician in private diagnostic laboratories... but such posts are limited and the pay is low (particularly in private labs)... so many will do the following:

1. Pursue higher level of education - to improve marketability, by doing Masters and PhDs in relevant fields of study, then become University lecturers themselves or join Pharmaceutical/Biomedical companies as researchers (this too is limited/rare)

Read: http://www.hgucolombo.org/?page_id=97

2. Become school teachers - the biomedical graduates will have to take one and a half year teachers training diploma, after which they become school teachers (usually science teachers). This option is also available to other graduates from other fields of study as well, mainly due to the lack of relevant job available to them. (even Engineering graduates become school teachers)

Read: http://www.ou.ac.lk/home/index.php/ousl/fa...ma-in-education

3. Become Medical Underwriters - some biomedical graduates join life insurance company as Medical Underwriters (google it up), training will usually be provided by the insurance company.

Read: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medical_underwriting

4. Join graduate entry programs - this is usually done abroad, in countries like Australia, UK, US. By using the Biomedical degree as the entry qualification, the graduate can proceed to become Medical Doctor, Dentist, Pharmacist or Veterinary Doctor via the graduate entry program offered in such countries. It is a money and time consuming path.

Read: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graduate_Medical_Program

... so... if your aim is to make a lot of money... Biomedical Science is definitely not the way to go... (even MBBS for that matter nowadays)...

... Do what you want to do, dont be forced to do something you have no interest in. Do a lot of research on the course you are planning to take, its marketability/job opportunities in your country....

Be warned... if you heed your parents advice to study MBBS... be prepared for 'hellish life' during medical school and during internship.... and please make sure the medical program is recognized by your country's medical council:

http://www.srilankamedicalcouncil.org/foreignuniversity.php

I am advising you based on my experience and knowledge on the matter as I am a holder of both BSc.Biomedical Science and MBBS degrees...

Plan your future wisely... smile.gif

Totally agree with the fact that biomed dont earn alot esp in Malaysia. The pay is peanut if you go for lab technician or sales.

I was offered a job as a medical underwriter too by Prudential 10 years ago.

I have to take LOMA certification for underwriting if I had took the job offer.

I declined the offer and went to pursue Medicine instead.
