hey guys, can someone recommend me any swiss made one below rm1k?
prefer leather strap one...thx in advance!
links provided are much appreciated~  wave.gif  notworthy.gif
*
swiss made and mechanical? choices very limited, what to do I am a mechanical guy..
FYI: raw 6497 movement cost over US$100. Skeleton version 6497 usually cost over US$240. swiss quartz usually US$10-60.

- Choisi (online order only all swiss made) maybe the best deal since this brand is clearing stock, focusing on producing movement.
http://www.ocean7watchco.com/cs1/index.php...&category_id=17
- Hamilton lowest end if U can find (most likely manual winding)
http://www.overstock.com/Jewelry-Watches/H...ci_sku=12349171
- Tissot (if U can get extremely good discount thru AD),
===> models to look at are PRS516, PRC200
- swiss army (only thru gray market but its hard these days)
- Bernhardt watch (swiss movement, US made)
http://www.bernhardtwatch.com/officerswatch.html
- Ollech & Wajs, US brand swiss made
http://gnomonwatches.com/Ollech&Wajs.htm
-Aristo, geramn watch with swiss movement
http://gnomonwatches.com/AristoHP7.html

if U are looking for quartz the selection is a little wider.
- Zodiac
- Certina
- Tissot

anyone can comment if this pricing is good? anyone deals with Passions before? the web state that they do give 3% discount if pay by cash.  Can the price advertised on the web be negotiated?
*
I have bought from them. they cannot negotiate price. A proud bunch of ppl.
Passions pricing is a little higher than other place, that is IF u can find a similar product. most often, u aren't going to find it.
they do offer 1 yr warranty on the stuff they sell unlike other store, maybe thats why the higher prices.
most places selling pre-own only give 3mth warranty.

Added on January 18, 2010, 12:02 pmHey, anyone here familiar with the watch brand called Steinhart? Is it reliable...a good watch? Does anyone know where to get one in Malaysia?? Or better still in Penang??
*
U can order from them directly at http://www.steinhartwatches.de/ or shop in Singapore from http://gnomonwatches.com/Steinhart.html
I have issue shopping with Germany is U got to pay the VAT. at about 19%!
U get the same design and if I am not wrong same swiss supplier at http://www.debaufre.com/ good thing is don't have to pay USA tax.

using ETA 2824 or Unitas 6487 movement they are reliable work horse movement. WUS should have tons of reviews on them.
saw a pre own on WUS for US$299

by the way, is it ok to purchase a watch online? There are so many nice watches i saw online that I really like....but i have never bought one online before...so I'm a little worried if it'll get lost in the mail...or if there is any kind of tax imposed?
*
well, I have to say I have a fair amount of watches online. of course u got to know which online dealer to deal with to be safe.
besides My aging Tag heuer and my spouse Oris, the rest of my watches I got them online.
when U buy expensive watches do make sure seller insure them or get them to ship thru UPS/Fedex.
iirc UPS/Fedex auto insured the item so long they are declared at the amount U bought them.
so if they are lost, U can claim from UPS/Fedex the full amount.

as for tax, U maybe subjected to Import duty 1-5%. I don't know as currently I don't resided in Malaysia.
found ppl talking about it, they may shed some light on that matter
http://forums.ebay.com.my/thread.jspa?threadID=500001197

ck77 getting his Pam homage online thru Getat, u can ask him his experiences
they do ship from china/russia.

As nice as it looks, do consider the weight of these watches.  I've heard of people who put them back on sale after discovering that its too heavy for them to wear daily @ long hours...
*
isn't always the problem with big watches? esp those big diver watch.
the above watch is 4.2oz or 112gm.
Graham watches are all above 120gm
some bell and ross weight > 150gm. eg Bell & Ross Space 2 weight 170gm.

FYI: mechanical make up about 20-30% of the sales in volume, but brings in 70-80% of the revenue.
quartz ~70-80% of the sales in volume, but brings in much lesser in revenue.

sorry, what is AD means?

Added on January 20, 2010, 12:11 pmkinda like this one

TISSOT PRC200 T17.1.526.52

finally u review what u like. its hard to give suggestion without any idea of what one is looking for.

Ad = authorize dealer (these shops discount are controlled strictly by watch brands, if they are found out to give U more than allowed watch brands can take away their dealership and these shops can no longer get the watches direct from the manufacturer.)

can see a trend here... young men all love their chrono and sub dials!

that model is a quartz. retails US$425 (I think), getting thru AD discount maybe 25%.
if U shop on sites like amazon they are not AD.
http://www.amazon.com/Tissot-PRC200-Mens-W...2/dp/B000KKO894

guess U are going for a quartz chrono under $1K budget.

with regards to Paul Scholes, its a 1yr contract and Cyma paid him US$300K.

Ryan Giggs, the most decorated player in the Premier League, has signed a lucrative endorsement deal with Swiss luxury watch brand CYMA.

Giggs, who has played for Manchester United for his whole professional career and won a string of honours - including 11 Premier League titles, two Uefa Champions League medals, four FA Cups and the Fifa Club World Cup - was named PFA Player of the Year last season at the age of 35. He will endorse CYMA watches across its key Asian markets into 2010. The deal covers the territories of Greater China, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand - four areas in which United have millions of fans - and is believed to be worth around US$300,000 to the player.

Giggs has scored seven goals so far in the current Premier League season as well as a goal against German Champion Wolfsburg in the Uefa Champions League and has recently been short-listed for the European Player of the Year Award.

"Ryan Giggs provides a perfect match for CYMA Watches. With his role model attitude towards loyalty, fair play and discipline as well as excellent match play he showcases CYMA's brand values built upon a passion for impeccable craftsmanship and dedication to Swiss watchmaking tradition," said James Law, general manager of City Chain Company Ltd. "It is amazing to see that at the age of 35 Giggs is amongst the best BPL (Barclays Premier League) players."

James White, of the Total Sports Asia agency which arranged the deal, added:  "We are proud to work with the best in the market – with CYMA, one of the leading manufacturers of luxury watches as well as Ryan Giggs, one of the best midfielders English league football has seen to date. This deal shows that TSA's relationships and knowledge of the market can be integral to brands across Asia."

Daymon, is 18yr old, zero appreciation with mechanical watch at his stage. beside my tag shown in my collection.. norm ppl may not know the other brands.

To Daymon,
having own a few fashion watches. A Jap quartz and Swiss quartz isn't much diff there. I would try a mechanical. not sure if U do, but I enjoy a display back. and the brown leather on my JLC is Ostrich.

is that a swan neck regulator? 1hr already running so fast, must have gone thru huge shock. the last time my vintage roamer did that is because I took it golfing!
iirc, u paid 100-200 for it.
I lost faith with hongkong/chinese homages, I paid us$50 for 1, after 6mths that darn thing started running fast (30mins every 24hr), next few mths it started running irregularly at times fast at time so slow. I threw it away.

What movement is that? Not even regulation or servicing could help?
I don't expect top notch Swiss quality, what you get is what you paid. This is to me more like a wear-spoil-and throw away watch.
*
heck knows, some chinese. paid us$50 for it, send in for regulation + servicing would cost more than the watch.
I expect it to be the kind wear and throw thingy. thats why I am very reluctant to get a seagull. I know there QC not really there.
although ST-1812 if done right is decent, if paying us$200-300 is it really worth the trouble to get it done right the 2nd time round?

if i pay us$200, I expect swiss quality. since I can get a swiss mechanical online at around us$200-300 mark.

those eta 6497, pocket watch movement is a work horse. with routine servicing they will last U a lifetime.
even U at your 60s-70s, reading time also no issue on such basic watch.

here's a list of True German watch brands. I wouldn't go for those mushroom brands if I am paying over us$100

Miyota 8215 is Citizen some threads on it. this movement only winds in 1 direction unlike eta 2824.
reliability should be quite ok, accuracy depends if manufacturer regulates it well.
oh.. its a non hacking movement, pull out the crown would not stop the sec hand.

The watch is sent for regulating by my friend's watchmaker, let's see how it perform after that.
What you think about OWC, since they are using ST21 in their Mil Sub homage with a whopping price of USD299   unsure.gif
Cheapest Swiss mechanical is definately Swatch, as far as the movement is concern. One can always swap the movement to other homage or modified watch  laugh.gif
OWC, ST21 US$299 is kinda expensive I think. seem like the case, bracelet cost that much.. ST21 next to nothing.
ya cheapest swiss mech gotta be swatch all under US$100. as for movement grade, maybe the lowest.
for US$200-300 can find those closeout deals or gray market. a swiss army on 6498 cost around that figure.

kinda expensive for a unmod Valjoux 7750 automatic chronograph

don't mind preown here is one

for half the price can get from Guinand, the founder of Sinn. pics of movement here, very nicely decorated with blue screws.
pretty well regulated under +3sec.
