My friend just bought one for herself and her bf. RM600 each. What is the suprise is that, these two watches are both automatic, chronograph, leather strap with deployment and one of them even had Power reserve. I was like wtf. The one with the power reserve also had blued hands and they both looked great. Its an American brand, has EVERYTHING but somehow I can't bring myself to buying one. Wtf is wrong with me. ya American brand, pretty sure chinese movement maybe from Seagull or shanghai Edit: So yea... Do consider this brand, you will be suprised. http://www.longislandwatch.com/Arbutus/About_Arbutus.htm QUOTE Albert Reed along with his brother, founded the ARBUTUS watch company in the early 1980's. They named the company after Albert's hometown in Canada, which was largely destroyed by a fire. Albert spent almost 30 years studying and working as an apprentice in a watch factory located in Shanghai. So, he is well versed in the mechanics of fine timepieces. U would be surprise!havent been wearing a japanese watch for a very long time, got converted to swiss lover haha it is like if you go swiss made, you wouldnt go wrong ![]() QUOTE Tag Heuer New Caliber 1887 Watch Movement SNAFU This was certainly a sticky situation for Tag Heuer, the details are a bit murky, but the situation is clear. Tag Heuer recently announced their "new, in-house made and designed" Caliber 1887 automatic chronograph movement. All seems well with the movement itself, but the problem is that Tag Heuer didn't design it. Nope, they sort of cosmetically altered an over 10 year old Japanese Seiko movement design (Seiko 6S37). So after 150 years, Tag Heuer's anniversary surprise was on loan from Japan. I do understand that this was arranged with Seiko, and that Tag Heuer will actually be building the movements in limited quantities themselves. At least Seiko isn't doing everything. Tag Heuer got caught red handed by the watch lover community who noticed the similarities between the two movements. This qualifies us as true nerds, seeing details such as this. Tag Heuer would have gotten away with it to, if it wasn't for us meddling bloggers! That's right, thank the internet watch lover community, who is responsible for this situation being discovered. A powerful indication to the watch industry of what the internet can do for them, or against them. In good taste, as a response to the situation, Tag Heuer CEO Jean-Christophe Babin himself went online to respond to the "accusations." He honorably admitted a "mistake" by Tag Heuer and that the movement was in fact "adopted" from Seiko. The clear winner in this whole situation is first and foremost the power of the Internet watch lover community, second Seiko, and third Tag Heuer for responding to a sticky situation quickly and admirably. Seiko movements are pretty outstanding, and it is funny that here even the Europeans are rather tacitly suggesting that. Plus, Tag Heuer is a rather mainstream watch brand. Meaning that most people who buy their watches will never even know about this situation. Tag Heuer admitted wrong doing, hopefully a few heads will be caved in there in the marketing department, and they will go on their lives being good watch designers, not movement designers. Lastly, there are several watch forums and blogs that knew about this situation but refused to mention it even though they discussed the new Tag Heuer Caliber 1887movement. They lose the most in this situation for the destruction of valuable street cred among Internet watch lovers who simply expect more. This post has been edited by patryn33: Dec 17 2009, 10:55 AM |

QUOTE(sotong4896 @ Dec 17 2009, 04:47 PM) i do agree with you. seiko got too many range of products and caused a problem on their branding. ppl like u dot think so, however u do find a nice group of watch fanatics who think otherwise.people no longer see that seiko as an expensive watch compared to swiss made Seiko did a good job in their branding. if they were to priced themselves high like Tag, no one can afford a watch in japan in the good old days. u do find a good number of Japanese in their 50s and up who prefer a seiko over an Rolex. thats why those Grand Seikos and Credor are sold exclusively in Japan. a 10k tag/longines/omega besides a 10k seiko like a credor/grand seiko.. I prefer the later. hey just me. ppl do compare a GS/credor to Rolex and claim specs wise its as good as COSC or better, finishing wise better than a rolex. ppl say get a homage to test drive for a few mth, when it grow on u get real watch.
anyway, wait another yr or so.. prices will come down. AD around the region still sell them at no discount. pre-own market prices coming down, 2yrs ago ppl make US$1-2K selling a gently used Pam. today prices still high (better than Rolex for a brand that use alot of ETA as a base), takes time to soften http://www.watchseller.com/panlummaraut2.html just saw tis Pam 48 no demand? new retails US$6200, used selling US$3650. bad econ, prices softening fast in the US http://forums.watchuseek.com/showthread.php?t=339431 This post has been edited by patryn33: Dec 20 2009, 10:30 PM |

QUOTE(jind86 @ Dec 21 2009, 02:38 PM) do you guys have any recommended websites which i can read up about watches? whether it be basic or advanced level.. other sourceshttp://www.iwmagazine.com/archives.cfm http://www.europastar.com/europastar/index.jsp Added on December 21, 2009, 10:31 pm QUOTE(fauzul hazwan @ Dec 21 2009, 02:10 PM) hello! im new to watch collecting, about to graduate to my 1st auto watch. I have 2k-3k budget, and have been pretty keen on victorinox, hamilton, ball and fortis. u guys think theres any from these models that can suit my budget? a high of 3k budget, may get U a lowest end Ball with a leather strap. the design may not be your liking (I assume U are a young man in early 20s)Fortis maybe only the Pilot Professional Day/Date 40mm. swiss army/victorinox should get u a nice wide range. anything but the Chrono http://www.swissarmy.com/timepieces/Pages/...ory=mechanical& Hamilton pretty much same with swiss army, however U should be able to afford a auto Chrono. other brands to look at, Mido, Epos, Louis Erard, Longines (maybe conquest collection, hydroconquest collection, spirit in leather) http://www.timepiecestore.com/catalog/loui...a-sportive.html Added on December 21, 2009, 10:34 pm QUOTE(r3kahsttub @ Dec 21 2009, 02:24 PM) perhaps you can try certina (example as below): this exact model? can buy at 3k? so good deal... better than grey market prices.http://www.certina.com/Collection/Gent-Aut...Valgranges.aspx i belive the price would suit your budget perfectly (~myr2-3k), is swiss made (although not a luxury watchmaker), and has decent, classic designs. http://www.amazon.com/Certina-Watches-Podi...0/dp/B001W6WPMM Added on December 21, 2009, 10:56 pm QUOTE(fauzul hazwan @ Dec 21 2009, 03:18 PM) i have been reading this forum from the very 1st thread until now, i still dont understand the grey market stuff. Is it genuine watches? patryn33 pmed me and suggested a hamilton from a grey market, i peeped into hamilton website and found pretty nice ones. i am interested to get a hamilton from a grey market, but im worried about the authenticity, and after sales services. another matter that im confused about is are these grey market are just on the net, or are there some brick and mortar watch sellers that is a part of the grey market? grey market watches, usually over supply of watches... AD couldn't get rid of them so sell them off cheaply, usually older models. They do not carry any factory warranty. grey market dealers often times offer U the after sales service. Some grey market dealer would remove the serial number off the watch, but today hardly done now. anything on ebay is also considered grey market.local pre-own and grey market dealer http://www.collectorstime.com/ http://www.orolus.com/about/index.shtml not sure how many ppl out there actually make fake Hamilton, Fortis, Swiss Army, at least I have yet to find any.. although I have seen fake Tissot for some reason. retailer on bing.com should be pretty safe to deal with. I had dealt with thewatchery, overstock and things check out fine. FYI: a Valjoux 7750 movement already cost US$440. asian clone maybe US$80 not sure how worth it to make a fake to sell for US$200. can google replica watch and see what the kind of things ppl fake.
