the movie was okay. just okay. maybe slightly better than average but letdown by expectations.
echo what quickfire said, about the philosophical questions being blurted out openly. however i think those questions werent meant to be the underlying questions the viewers are meant to asked.
granted when they were asked, the viewers were leaned to those sort of questions and mentality, thus 'incepting/inceptionizing' the ideas and questions later on subliminally implanted by the visuals and progression of the film. then again i might be reading too much into nothing

the idea of the engineers as being the creators/god of human, several religions/beliefs elements were used. first it was the sole 'giant' changing his dna, and falls into the water (evolution concept). then the rapace character believing the humans were enginereed by these higher intelligence lifeforms while still keeping the cross sigil/necklace strongly (granted, it could just be holding on to her fathers memory). however inadvertantly one would associate the christianity religion with jesus being god and since jesus is a man, not a far stretch from the 'giant man' engineers so to speak. not really sure if scientology came into play here. then lastly the 'giants/engineers' ships resemble that of a karipap or a moon crescent which nowadays is associated with islam (nevermind that the crescent logo or usage is created after the fall of the last khalifah or something like that, doesnt really have anything to do with the religion).
so i think what was intended was for the viewer to question their own religion in a sense. there could also be the elements of the creation (human) rising against the creator (giants/engineers) at play here, supplanting the idea its ok to be 'heretical' (is that the word im looking for?).
i dont know. maybe im trying too hard to find a deeper meaning to the movie or im just imagining stuff. either way the movie let me down.
on the aliens side of things.... it throws the aliens vs predator movie out of whack perhaps (since predators have been using aliens to kill and hunt for sport). the black goo it seems can infect the host and allow it to mutate... im assuming it was the worm that turned into the 'snake' like thing that broke that fella arm off and killed the other one. just as he didnt die fully when he submerged into that acidic black goo and later attacked the ship, he was mutating. is it fair to assume that the first 'alien' came out of the genetic material of the 'octopus' and the 'giant'? it wasnt a fully developed alien like in the prior alien movies. anyways.....
btw, it was fairly obvious to me that charlize therons character must have been the daughter to weyland going by her emotional outbursts without having the need for her to say it. further perpetuated by the earlier announcement that david is closest thing he has to a son.
the last scene definitely allows for another sequel to this prequel of alien movie...

the movie can go in either direction or both, depends which to focus on... can follow rapace character and fassbender to the giants planet (a different course for films theme-departure from alien,) or can also focus a bit on the alien let loose from the giant and it somehow going to relate to the alien movie. its fine if they want to take this prequels into another direction (going to giants planet) instead of focusing on alien wrecking havoc, but i hope they make it part of the continuity leading up to alien. otherwise whats the point, the movie couldve worked by just expanding on the idea the humans were engineered by these giants and not have anything to do with alien.
Added on June 7, 2012, 5:01 pmthink they know this movie wont be such a box office.... hence the erratic options (dont think limited film reels or whatever as a source of limited options)
I think you're filling the gaps left by the writers with pure conjecture.

I did read an interview with Ridley that one of his ideas was that Jesus was actually one of the alien space jockey beings, and that we crucified him infuriated them. Make of that what you will...
Oh and I didn't see any good reason why they had to bring Weyland on board. It didn't serve any real purpose, no one cared about him or his relationship with his daughter, and he was bloody distracting with that god awful old-age make up.
I did kind of like Charlize's character though. She had some Ripley attributes... probably more so Shaw. I wished she didn't die.
Can't say the same about some of the other characters, whose stupidity was stupendous. Smart scientists breaking off from the group and then getting lost? Approaching an alien organism as though it was a kitten? Zombie Fifield was pretty embarrassing. And don't get me started on how the whole crew just conveniently forgot how Shaw clubbed them in the head and took off into the medlab room to give birth to a monster. Did no one bother to follow her? Everyone just pretty much forgot about her and completely ignored that she was drenched in blood when she re-appeared. The medlab scene was really good, superb tense stuff... it's just a pity it's wrapped around such a stupid sequence of events.
Btw, the octopus you refer to (or Cuddles, as it's apparently called) is probably a facehugger before it realized it was too huge and decided to evolve into a more economical and effective size.

I think this movie should be taken just as it is. It does gives food for though for those who enjoy delving into the deep mysteries. I for one would give this a decent 4/5 for its plot, action, casts and potentials. Its not exactly epic in a sense that it shadows the previous Aliens installment. In fact, its almost a different story line in its own universe.
Yes, the way the movie presents itself, there seems to be a lot of loopholes. And some characters are easily killed off without any sense. I wished a more gruesome or even unforgettable death scene would be there since its suppose to be a scifi thriller. Ridley Scott is probably too weak stomach to do that anyways.
In all, I still enjoy the movie very much. It delivers the scare and the classic touch of Ridley Scott. CGI looks amazingbut sadly I gad to endure a terrible 35mm format at TGV. Thats RM14 for a terrible format, mang!
Yeah, oddly enough, with such a terrible script, the movie is absolutely entertaining. I still can't be sure how good (or bad) it is, but I'll probably watch it at least once more.

Without giving out any spoilers, how much reference to the xenomorph was made in this movie?
If you have seen the trailer, there's a very obvious mural painting/carving of a xenomporh on the wall in the alien spaceship.
The last shot has a very clear reference to a xenomorph.

Watching this tomorrow in Digital 2D... should be
ok I guess. Oh come on, it can't be that bad. That's the vibe I'm getting... I haven't read much about the movie, just know it has a good response. Oh and I can barely remember those "Alien" films as I watched it years ago when I was a kid. I don't even know if I watched them to be honest, which could 'ease' this film.
Expectations seem to be the word being thrown around this film. Also, my first Fassbender film on the big screen.

He likes to, erm, expose himself which doesn't fare well with folks here.

You should get the ALIEN and ALIENS blurays then. The transfer is stunning. Alien is a slowburn masterpiece in every regard. Aliens is a bit outdated, but still a great fun thrill ride.
