Pretty popular too. Second only to magic i guess..Quite a few places to play and quite a number of tourneys running ard. Just like last week we had an event in singapore and this week there's a huge competition in singapore. Drop by Toybox...www.toybox.com.my or Comics corner for details lo. Cardmaster also got, i guess u frequent there too? lol monash student here too~ tongue.gif

Not quite as rosy as you pointed out, I'm afraid I gotta point out. Player base is a tiny fraction of Magic's, and competitive scene is rather quiet. Locally there's the RC qualifiers while the RC and the DMF is a rare occurrence, and too bad they had to lump it together so near instead of spreading it out to give the scene a little more life, and both are in Singapore.

Game's fun - but for a competitive player like me, the absence of achievable notable accomplishments drove me away from the game after my first and only WoW tournament (Heroes of Azeroth sealed, which I won, hehe.) after Nationals went missing despite being advertised. Magic in the past couple of months had PT Hawaii to qualify for, GP Singapore and it's trials and now running National qualifiers that will carry on until June, sprinkled with trials for GP Bangkok, Nationals in July, GP Bangkok in August, and qualifiers for PT Austin, Texas sprinkled in between, just between these short weeks. (Almost forgot to mention the recently concluded Cardmaster RM5k tourney.)

But that's just me.

It's nice something to play for fun, for sure. I enjoy playing Raid Master still and am looking forward to the next Raid Deck.

But if you're into Magic already, and is on a spending budget, I really don't advice getting into the game, unless you're not having fun with Magic, or want a change, which in that case, I'll say to you, "want my Luppos?". thumbup.gif

Have to disagree with you on that. I'll nevertheless say competitively it will never be able to match up magic's standards. But comparing with the time you were playing it, the support for WoW has changed so much. RC is currently scheduled twice a year and continentals once.DMF is obviously a rare occurance, but yet, it is still happening rather than what u hv pointed out. The last time u were in the scene was when we had a TO from ude that messed things up.From last yr onwards Edwin(from VS) took over and things are happening consistently and smoothly. It's a more casual scene compared to magic but not so much "laid back" as u implied on it. Proof of competitiveness? I myself am a casual gamer turning into competitive because of this game. Support is there, competition is there, ie continentals, realms and world championship(which i qualified once).Proof of prizes and competitiveness? Me and jason soon will hv our PS3,nanos and part of a spectral tiger(which will be sold for RM3k each) as proof of it.

Realms qualifier- happened January-April consistently
RC- Happens twice every yr. Singapore based championships
Continentals- Occuring again, as said by Edwin end of the yr
DMF- Currently in SG ,randomly occuring in each country

Just my side of the story cool.gif

Just my 2 sen.

I'm a new WoW player, picked up since November last year. I guess the interest for me was easy because i was a hardcore WoW MMO player for nearly 4 years, GM of LoTH one of the top Oceanic guilds.

My observations of the local WoW TCG scene:

1. Players are very friendly and helpful. People will teach you the ins and outs of the game, will share with you all the sneaky tricks that would normally take you months to learn on your own, and are generally very generous in sharing whatever card resources they have with you (as long as you prove yourself trustworthy).

2. The game is relatively easy (as in not difficult to understand) to learn, but it holds a lot of depth still. So its easy to start playing, but takes time to master. IMO, thats very important for this type of game, otherwise people will lose interest very quickly.

3. Its reasonably cheap. I've spent about... 3k on cards since i started, and i have just about EVERY card i could want from previous and current sets for 5 out of 9 of the available classes. I've heard that other card games... some single cards are hundreds of ringgit each, and without those cards... your decks are not fully competitive.

4. The competitiveness of the game... is encouraging.

i'll write more later.

Don't mean to offend guys, I think the game is great, and the players too. wink.gif

I'm just putting out my own personal feelings about it all as a competitive player. For me, it's just that the tournaments really fall short.

@ Colin

>it's a more casual scene compared to magic but not so much "laid back" as u implied on it.

Of course not, I'm sorry I made it seem to imply that.

I honestly sincerely believe competitive WoW players are no less as competitive as the most competitive Magic players.

As one myself, I sincerely respect the passion you guys have for the game, including the Burger King playtesting sessions, which is far more effort than some Magic players put in.

I love TCGs, people who have seen my trade folder can see proof. I have played and collected, in addition to WoW and Magic, Star Wars (both decipher and wizards) Yugioh, Duelmasters, Initial D, Harry Potter, LotR, amongst others. So please, don't think that I'm anti-WoW by any means.

My only point of contention is the organized play and tournament support that WoW has to offer - beyond that I'm happily content with both games.

>Realms qualifier- happened January-April consistently
>RC- Happens twice every yr. Singapore based championships
>Continentals- Occuring again, as said by Edwin end of the yr
>DMF- Currently in SG ,randomly occuring in each country

is pretty much what a WoW player in Malaysia gets annually. I'm just trying to point out the difference in what the game can offer compared to Magic.

In fact, take out the Singaporean events, the only thing local players get are RC Qualifiers. (Since we're both not taking release events into account, where both games have plenty.)

Compare it to the list of events Magic had.

In addition to the list I gave earlier, there are 71 events scheduled to happen from now until June in Malaysia. There was months where every weekend had a tournament bigger than RC Qualifiers. There were and going to be flight tickets to Hawaii, Berlin, Texas, and 3k USD to help you get to Rome for the World Champs this year. In WoW, you're on your own to get to the events of the highest levels.

And why bring up the prizes the games can offer? The reason I didn't is because of the disparity between the support each game publisher have for their respective games. I don't have the exact numbers, but when UDE runs 1 World Champs, when WotC runs 4 events of the same level per year, and while UDE spends several hundred thousands (USD) a year in top level events, Wotc spends millions. Which game being able to afford the bigger monetary awards is again, clear, which is why I didn't bring it up earlier.

Here's another: CCEgames run RM100 for first place tournaments as a weekly fixed event. When a local store can run events like that...

Now, believe it or not, I keep my eyes out for WoW events, I seriously would have went for the DMF if it wasn't for me having my finals right now. In the time that WoW had 2 RC Qualifiers, Magic had more than 10 times more events that were of equal or higher lvls. (Hawaii, Berlin PTQs, Singapore GPTs) And that's what turned me off competitive WoW. Sorry for being long winded, it's just that I can't believe you are willing to contend the point I brought out when the difference is so clear.

Look, I love the game too, and as games, they aren't really very different from each other, in many aspects, quality, gameplay or otherwise. But organized play and tournament support?

If you're a competitive person, Magic's the game to play.

If not, I feel that WoW is a GREAT game toe consider starting. wink.gif (Of course, if you haven't, and like TCGs, give magic a try, kek. biggrin.gif )

Thanks for the feedbacks guys.

LoL yeah I thought of getting WoW the first time cause I was a fan of WoW MMORPG. (Is this a very easy game or what? =P)
I played Thaurrisan and have a lvl 80 priest but I quit for awhile cause of study.

From the feedback, I'm considering to try the game out... My only concern is:

1) Where do I start from? (Which Expansion, by booster or Singles)
2) Who To Play With?
3) Where to Play?

I spent nearly RM 5k on Magic =P sad to say.... but I just don't have the time to be competitive.. which i think is an awful waste.

The TCG? Since you already know how to play Magic, it'll be a breeze. Except for combat, the basics are the same.

EDIT: talking about hte MMO, i used to be so addicted to it too, lol. This was before TBC, when Naxx and T3 was new. (feel like an old far) I was crazy enough to try to grind for Grand Marshal. (The honor system was waaaaaay different then.) My girlfriend and I will trade places while one goes to class or bed, PVP and honor-grinding nonstop. Never made it to the top, but I got to Lt. Commander or something like that. GM was Rank 13 right? I think I got to rank 10 or 11. haha.

Play resources, play cards by their costs, attack till opponent life is 0 to win. (Of course, this is a gross simplification, in case anyone takes offense, hehe)

Being not in touch with the game for a while, question 1 is best answered by the resident players, but I believe I saw some drums of war 2 player start sets. There's quite some powerful cards (free-to-play cards!?) coming out from the Arena Grand Melee special set too, but I don't think there's much information about that set yet.

As for Q2&3, I love Toybox. wink.gif

EDIT: I need to seriously start studying for my paper tomorrow... /frown.

EDIT2: Kevin, try ude.com/wow for more information on the game, and the latest set previews currently running on the site.

WTS 2 nights stay in Singapore RM100 a night for DMF Singapore 22-24 May.

Holiday Inn Parkview, 4 star room for 1 star price (believe me, even a crap room in Singapore in Geylang will cost you more than RM100 a night).

You get a double bed all to yourself... and me as a room mate! smile.gif

Hmm...as for your question 1, that will depend on how you would liek to start the game. Some players start off by buying off a full set of a specific class and whichever allies(similiar to creatures in magic) they think is useful. From there, you only collect the specific class abilities and play the game. Cheap and easy. For about...300++ from the cheapest class(which i estimate will be hunter or a shaman) to a more expensive class like mage, paladin warriors. It depends on which type of gameplay you are interested in. Diff class have diff ways to kill, advantages as well as disadvantages.

2) There are players usually at Toybox, you can go there and check it out

3) Toybox or CC, but most of the crowd can be found at toybox. CC is where we usually go when there's a larger tournament
