I have a question... My GP has lots of feces. I just changed their bedding on friday night, then today, the whole place. black black! All the feces!!

€How come?!
*
I think that's alright....my GPs' cage also easily got dirty after 2 days, as they peed and poo a lot. As long as your GP is still healthy looking, alert and not losing weight...then it should be pretty normal.

QUOTE(reveur @ Jan 26 2009, 11:06 PM)
That brings us to another question...

How much is a lot?
Normally i leave her bowl with foods, pellets and all you can eat hay.

(They leave all the hay stick behind, is that normal? THe hard hard part)

I also sometimes feed her oranges, and anything i can get my hands on that she like. But just a bit. As a treat.

Her main food would be pellet and hay.

SO how much should i give her eat? Hay and pallet alike.
*
For pellet, fill the bowl approximately 3/4 full each meal. Hay, offer a handful of Timothy hay everyday. Orange or Vitamin C -rich fruits, give every other day if possible.

Signs of a healthy guinea pig:
- Clean, bright eyes
- Full, slightly-rounded body
- Soft fur with no bare patches (hairless area behind each ear is normal).
- Eats and drinks normally
- Well formed droppings with no diarrhea

Things to watch for:
- Overgrown front teeth
- Bare patches in the fur
- Diarrhea or discolored droppings for longer than 2 days
- Lethargic behavior; seizures or tremors
- Weight loss; not eating or drinking normally
- Sneezing or wheezing; discharge from the eyes, nose or mouth.

ya...at the home n bedding section...like wat u said, i have checked in Daiso The Curve as well....don't have....even Macro now closed down already...sigh....

Added on January 28, 2009, 8:13 pmoh ya....want to ask all the GP owner, can I get the dog water feeder for GP? since i saw most of you guys GP can drink like 400-500ml per day (even more than my dog tongue.gif)...if i get those for small animal, will it be too small?
*
You could use the dog type, provided your GPs know how to suck it. As the mouth piece is bigger than those small animal type, when it drinks, some water may dripped down on to the cage, make the cage flooded faster. You could hang it higher so the GP drink from the lower part of the mouth piece then won't have so much water dripping down while they drink.

I have some GPs know how to drink from that, and some don't know.

i found grids in carefore at midvalley !!!
it cost rm99.90 with 23 pieces, but it is last stock and 1 of the pieces is stolen=__=
the salesgirl say she will give rm20 discount since that is display item and it just left 22 pieces
so i bought it at rm79.90 with 22 pieces XD

is the price reasonable? i have look for this thing for a very longggggg time, my gp can have a bigger room finally biggrin.gif
*
Congrat! You finally found the grid that everyone was looking for. Yes..it is really reasonable price. Last time I saw this pricing, but someone argued that it was RM159.90 , I thought I had mistaken.

Show your GP please...I was to see how she had grown.

cool....finally somebody got it...i think it's just so difficult to find...the price is reasonable...as one piece is less than RM5...

is it normal when you just bring the GP home, they don't tend to eat?
*
It is pretty normal that the GP when stressed and scared, will not eat. Put your GP cage on higher place where the dog is not easily be seen by your GP.

You're welcomed. I hope they didn't lose weight much when boarding with me.

Xiawa's pure white baby GP was one of my GP's offspring. Actually I quite like to keep it myself, but since Xiawa very keen and sincere in keeping it as pet, I believed she will take good care of it.

Added on February 3, 2009, 11:11 pmI read in guinea pig corner V3, Juztiny recommended one shampoo for treating lice and mite....Where can we get it, Juztiny~~~~
*
That Anivision shampoo which I recommended last time, the manufacturer discontinue in producing it already, not because it is no good, but the manufacturer rebranding the shampoo with add extra formula and with different packing, selling for much much higher price. Luckily I bought 4L last time. If you guys want I could sell some to you, after all 4L could really last me few years usage if I keep it to myself. Last time I bought 250ml already last me a year usage. The cost of 250ml shampoo is cheaper than go for vet treatment. Interested party, please pm me.

Juztiny's male GP didn't make your female GP pregnant successfully?  laugh.gif
*
Actually GP need time to bond with each other, one week not sufficient time for them to bond, and the timing must be right (provided female GP on heat, and willing to let the male GP humped). I have seen my female GP refused to let the male hump, turn aggressive if the male GP keep on chasing it.

Actually I found a better solution than coloplast sheet, as the coloplast sheet easily chewed up by the GP. Now I'm using aluminium/zink sheet to put the base of the cage. Much more durable than using coloplast. Nowadays, the bookstore sold the coloplast sheet is getting smaller size too.

Here is how the aluminium/zink sheet looks like.

I saw a thicker kind of cloroplast at the hardware just now. My husband called it to another name.. cant remember but it definetly looked better than the average thin cloroplast lol.

Btw Justiny.. O_o arent the zinc edges like sharp? U fold it is it?
*
Well...only the 4 corner edges would be sharp, but could use tape to seal it then. I think those hardware shop sell type is very expensive for Pengola roof use, cannot be folded. Unless another type is the advertising board type, also not as durable as zink sheet. smile.gif

can tell me how to get to Dr.Yeoh's clinic in Tmn Megah..??(from federal highway or Jln Universiti or PJ ss2)
*
That is very unusual to have wet or teary eyes on GP.

But one thing I noticed that red eyes GP are more sensitive towards bright sunlight. Day time they (red eyes GP) will tend to close their eyes half size smaller.

Gp are quite sensitive, if they are not used to travelling they can get stressed, more over insufficient space or smaller cage oso can make them feel stressed. how old are your GP? you can try but if you see any sign of stress like refuse eating, weight lost, diarhea(um i dont know if this spells right) you should avoid doing so. my 3 females are used to traveling, so its not a problem for them, but i only start bringing them along with me when i feel like they already bond with me, um around 3months after i bring them home.

Added on February 6, 2009, 1:43 pm

my gps does that too...he's enjoying himself i think. when GP are happy they will run n jump(popcorn) like  they are in fire, so cute n pelik oso hahaha  laugh.gif if there are more then 1 gp in a cage oso became more haywire...they'll run n chase and jump onto each other untill the bedding n pellet oso terbang..... rclxub.gif
*
Although GP is a sensitive animal, but it won't be easily died because of changing environment or cage. Probably just stressed for a day or a night, then next day would be ok.

yup thats right. if you keep them comfortable they'll just stress a bit only..

here's my male abby, Shiro(white/orange) and Shiki(agouti) they are adorable and since its my frist time handling male gp, i see some differences in their character if i compare with my gurls...n to me they bond with me easier than my females...
*
Usually male GPs have more courage, hence could easily overcome their fear, and not so shy.

hi sorry for the late reply...i currently have 7GPs including the 2 i adopt from you...happy.gif they are now mixed well with my other GP, no more shy2...

but sadly i have to inform you this, 1 of the GP i adopt from you (Nettie the female) is having some kind of skin disease. i noticed it just now as i groom her for the first time, i saw white flakes on the skin area, at her back. there is also 1 part thay lost some fur and the skin shows bare with thw white flakes surrounding the area....it looks like dandruff flakes, and its alot too...i never saw this in any of my other GP. but her case looks severe so i have to isolate her for the time being....

can anyone tell me what this disease is and how to cure it? from what i read form this site : http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=18+1800&aid=2998

"T. caviae causes severe scratching and self-trauma. There may also be hair loss, thickening of the skin, redness, and papules. This mite usually affects the head, shoulders, back, and flanks of the guinea pig, but may spread to the entire animal. Secondary bacterial infections can occur. The itching is so severe that some animals may appear to have seizures or other abnormal behavior. Severely infected pregnant guinea pigs may abort. Some guinea pigs may carry the mite, but show no signs. Then, if they are stressed by poor nutrition, cold temperatures, or other illnesses, they may develop disease. The mite is transmitted by direct contact, and can temporarily infest people.

An infestation with T. caviae can be diagnosed by a veterinarian performing a skin scraping. The mites can be difficult to find, and the veterinarian may prescribe treatment solely based on the clinical signs of disease.

The most common treatment is ivermectin injections every 10 days for three treatments. Animals in contact with the infested animal should be treated, as well. The mites can survive in the environment, so it is recommended that the housing be cleaned and then soaked in a lime sulfur solution at a dilution of 1:40 (one part lime sulfur to 40 parts water). Dry everything thoroughly before placing the guinea pig back into his housing."

i suspect poor Nettie has Trixacarus caviae. my lil sister developed an allergic reaction towards her, as after my sis hold nettie some reddish "benjol" like mosquito bites will appear on her hands and where nettie touched her...and maybe thats is what the article meant by "The mite is transmitted by direct contact, and can temporarily infest people."

can this be self treated by pet owner? can applying ivermectin direct on the infected area can help or i really need to jab her? and where can i find lime sulfur? hope anyone can help, i'm worried about Nettie, she's just a little gurl...plus the other GP  can get infected too... icon_question.gif

Last month I adopted a gp from somebody, it's condition was like what you had mentioned above. Now it has been fully recovered, new fur growing out. I used the same shampoo bath on it twice a week for continuous 2 weeks routine. Picture below is to show you the before and after picture.

Luckily it did not infest my other GPs, as I bath all the same shampoo to prevent. You could also wash your cage with vinegar, after that put under hot sun to dry.
