Coming from windows, I would like to try out Linux as my main. What distro should I go with? I would like to keep my desktop clean .. that's all .. and I prefer to have things installed only when prompted .. unlike at times Windows, prone to malwares that may be installed without the user knowing ..

I'll be using it mainly for writing research papers, running statistical analysis or perhaps some bioinfo
