Molting
The skin of centipedes (exoskeleton) is mostly composed of chitin, a non-living layer, wich does not grow.
So if centipedes want to grow, they need to shed (replace the exoskeleton) known as moulting or ecdysis.
The actual shedding process can take a half hour or up to 2 hours.

Young instars do molt aprox. every 2 or 3 months, fullgrown adults only once or twice a year.
Adults can shed for regenerating lost bodyparts (such as antennae, legs, ultimate legs)
When a centipede is about to molt you can notice the old exoskeleton getting loose, the centipede is getting a dull color (starts at the ultimate legs) and won't eat at this time. (best to avoid having live-food with the centipede at this moment,... as they could damage the centipede when he's molting !) During the molting process the new exoskeleton is still very soft and flexibel, it can take up to 2 days before the new skin is fully hardened. Centipedes usually eat their shedded skin right after they molted, to regain strength.

Yes it is. On another note, here's another interesting species! This one is still around, been keeping 3 of these the past 3-4 months and they're doing pretty well so far.

It's local Ryo. I owe this species to a bunch of friends who did alot of hard work digging up a rotten tree root infested with termites and red ants. Look out for that and you may end up with some Cormocephalus in your hands.

But here's something important, try your best not to overharvest. Take only what you can sustain alive. 2-3 is all you need, max. And be very careful with your hands.

All Centipedes are venomous and should never be handled bare-handed unless necessary.
In general centipede bites are not considered life threatening to humans,
but every individual can respond different to the effects of the venom!
Centipedes bites are painfull, depending on the size of the Scolopendrid and the amount of injected venom
There only have been 3 reports of human deaths caused by centipede bites in the last 100 years (2 of which are questionable).
A recent case (2005) reports a 46-year man from Turkey, this is the first case reported of a mortal NF induced by a centipede bite.
(but every year more then 5000 bites are reported in Turkey without any significant impact).

Scolopendrids won't attack their keeper or other people when they come near.
Centipedes are secretive inverts which prefer to run away and hide when disturbed.
Off course they will bite if there's no other way out or when they are grabbed.
A rather defensive behaviour then agressive.

it seems like some of them are live in colony is it?
may be a dumb question, but thats what i found in my secondary school while we were demolishing the land to make it flat.
while we were flattening the ground, we indeed pick up more than 70 centipedes, including the babies and several adults.

at that time we are really moron until we use hand to pick them up for our Arowana as feeders.

Not cheap. And the sad part is, you won't be able to differentiate between the sexes. Need to establish a few in a colony before being able to breed. Am looking for people interested in trying. They're really gorgeous.

P/s: I only encourage non-traders with close to zero interest in making money to join in and pm me. Have my personal reasons.

Sounds nice, a pic will be great. Don't kill it.
------

P/s: Pedes are by far the bugs I fear most. They venom packs a punch and are erratic in the way they move. Can change from overdrive into reverse gear in a second. They're also turbocharged bugs, speed is not their slack. Please be careful how you keep them. Tall containers alone won't be good enough. And try reading up on bite reports of the species you guys plan to keep to at least give a rough idea of what first aid steps you would take should you end up getting tagged. Stay safe.
-------

As for the Alipes, I'm only looking for trustworthy friends. Won't be including just about anyone in a rush. Thanks for all the pm's.

Sekian.

Got my 1st (Got 4) centipede from dizzy 2day
Centipede no1, which is the red leg, crazy fast! Spend more than 10minutes to rehouse it to another container
Centipede no2, a black (Maybe a scolopendra sp), very docile and slow.. Nth special, easy2 rehouse
Centipede no3, a black 1 also, this 1 very tiny, both of its ultimate leg are missing
Centipede no4, also a black 1, but this 1 very big! When i open container it straight climb out! Fun to watch, after finish rehouse it started eating the mealworm i threw in ealier. Very very nice experience indeed

Observing them are really fun especially when they move around, digging substrate, eating and grooming themself
Im looking forward2 learn more about them tongue.gif

Hey man,

Nice collection you have there! I always fesinate by such unique creature, and my dream is to own Scolopendra gigantea If money is not a concern drool.gif but your substrate seen to be too moisture, do careful with the fungus disease make sure your enclosure for the ped has enough ventilation.

max-oasism: Your interested in sending lifestock? I might be wrong, you can visit the poslaju office stated by my post b4. Somewhere near SS22. On the counter, there is a yellow book, containing details of packaging. One of the list is lebah and ular sutera. Asked the staff, she did not denied bout that. Later package went through. Didnt care much.

but i can see the staff didn like the idea of sending lifestock.

1 feet long centipede?! tat common eh... should go pick some back

Inspect the container often to check for possible escape(pedes take escape artist tendencies up two notches above any other invert) or death. A dead centipede smells awesome. No words can describe except..breathtaking.. Talking out of experience..wahaha!

Im not good at ID-ing a centipede but it does looks like 1 from the red color head
If u can get a very high resolution pic of its terminal leg ventral view, perhaps i can have a better ID of ur sp

Compare this with ur sp

Found a interesting topic on sexing a centipede by their molt in arachnoboards
We ll first take the exoskeleton of the centipede and fill it with water and squeeze it to see if the web spinning organ are visible o nt
Here's the link of the source http://www.arachnoboards.com/ab/showthread...t=108402&page=2

In this pic, the yellow color thingy is the web spinning organ which only the male have it while the white 1 is the organ they use2 defecate
user posted image

Looking forward2 sex mine, hope i can take out the exoskeleton b4 they consume it biggrin.gif

Doubt that, according to wikipedia, it can only be found in east asia

But i do believe its a scolopendra sp
To ID it i need a very clear pic of its terminal legs

3 death occured on centi bite... 1 on infant another on old guy....another unconfirm if tats not wrong...

they are fast, great escape artist, give painful bite but fascinating creatures.

Keep danger at minimal level and take precaution, do not fool around for keeping venomous creature.

other than tat, its all fun to watch em

Pls keep ur anger down, we are replying politely despite of ur reply bashing our hobby
If u have research, u ll find out tat death from centipede bites are extremely rare
Only occur in infant, old ppl or ppl with allergic to venom
I understand tat unexpected thing ll happen and im prepared for it
Mind u again, we did not keep them because we think they are cool
We are nt d!ckhead
Keeping scorpion are not really safer than centipede
Do u knw hw many ppl die from a scorp sting every year?
Google up andoctonus australis and see wat they said about it
If u think its risky to keep centipede as pets, keep it for urself, u dun have2 scold us for keeping them
Cheer

i am sorry if it offended you, i should use the term interesting. I apologize for my habit of keeping words short.

Do understand i don't take it fun regarding human life and creatures. So chill down eh...we like our hobbies, we take pride, care responsibility for it.

Thanks ryo, for explaning.

btw, if you think T and scorpion are safe, centi should not be a problem to be kept as pet.

Unless he can take a very clear pic of ventral shot of the terminal leg
Else sure cant ID

--> a) Prefemur of terminal legs ventrally without spines: scolopendra subspinipes dehaani
--> b) Prefemur of terminal legs ventrally with 1-3 spines: c)
--> c.1) 20th legs without tarsal spine, terminal legs ventrally with 2-3 spines: Scolopendra multidens
--> c.2) 20th legs mostly with a tarsal spine, terminal legs ventrally with 1-2 spines: d)
--> d.1) head-coloration red and distinguishable from dark body, sternites 2-19 with 2 paramedian sutures that don't reach the end of each sternite: sc. subspinipes mutilans
--> d.2) paramedian sutures on sternites complete, only on sternites 16-19 finer: sc. subspinipes subspinipes

Yes you did, didn't you. But if you could get more feedback from him and be a gem as to share it with me, that'd be really wonderful. He's got to be really confident to put in a number like 90% accurate. There must be some defining points he's looking at which would really make a whole lot of difference to an experienced eye like his. I'm just as interested as ever to find out. Thanks up ahead.

They are the common type right?

Then how only they will attack us?
I mean as in using their fang to bite us?

interesting thread.. read from the 1st page to 12.. nice reading with some good info.. now i wont kill the pedes on sight! tongue.gif might just shoo them away with brooms.. i dont have em in my house in Seri kembangan but my in laws @ senai johor, thats another story.. 5" full black ones can be found under the bed! or hiding between the wall and the closet.. rumah kampung.. fully wooden house on stilts and they still can climb up.. spider wolf also quite common and i took some pic of 1 about 3" wide.. rclxub.gif

the biggest pede i saw in my life was at batu feringhi quite a long time ago.. 1st i saw a big ass cockroach about 2" from tip to tip running in a straight line.. it was funny cos have you ever seen a cockroach running in a straight line? usually they zig zag.. stop.. zig zag again.. and when i look further back what the cockroach is running from.. its a really2 big pede! fully black.. atleast 9" long and as thick as a my pinky finger.. i bailed as fast as i could.. keeping my distance and just watch the 2 race to the bushes.. sweat.gif

Ryo,
Its full body red.
Some even full black.. ^^"

They will find somewhere to hide.
They can't live on solid ground. They need some moist places to live in and some food suply.
So it is not logic for them to be in our house or under your pillow. =]
Unless they got scared by maybe other insect or animals.

Guys, please correct me if i am wrong ^^

As far as human lives..There will always be the risk of dying,it is unavoidable but it is manageable right? Isn't it immaterial to discuss such thing, you can die even while you asleep. There a lot more educational topic can be discuss than "you-can-die-bcoz-of-pede" topic. Pede are for the brave one, if you scared just watch us enjoying our "brave" hobby. tongue.gif

Why are we so harsh to others who just try to express their opinion and make this thread become more alive and useful? If we are knowledgeable, that doesn't meant that we are so right that others are wrong and stupid and their opinion doesn't matter or their post should be ignored. Why so serious? We suppose to encourage and educate them, not chase them away. How are we going spread our hobby if we just keep chasing others away? In the end it will be same face remain in the hobby which is surely boring. Just my humble rm00.02. smile.gif

not that. if one cant give any constructive advice or opinion, why bother to post? wasting bandwidth. i'm on the threads lurking. i read replies, but sometimes i dont bother to post anything because i dont have anything to say. why post garbage? who cares what your mom wants to kill pedes or step on spiders or think scorpions are delecious? we certainly dont.

that dude is clearly taking this sub forum as kopitiam and gave a blardy kopitiam reply. the less the better these kinda people.

wanna read, read. if dont understand then ask. dont just click latest page and add some shit bout what your mother thinks bout pedes.

my Rm2.20 opinion.

I used my book and press it into half. And they can still move with their blood in green. Wth.. But I kinda learnt something from them. They don't harm you. If you go near them, they will run. As in lightning speed. Siao.. But if you insist. You buy a coffin for yourself la.

I saw a worm / centepid. I am not sure. It is green in colour. It has fur all over it. Damm fking disgusting. Is it a fur worm or centepid?

My friend's grandfather died after kena bite by a one of these poisonous / venoumous creature. It crawled out from a pool of sand and bit him.

Sorry guys. But I do have pets at home (fish, rabbit, dog) but seriously... centipede as pets ? Oh gosh, I just can't imagine it... even snake is fine as the skin is not as 'scaly' or doesn't have (...shivers again..) that many legs...

uhh....

Furthermore, it is a FACT they are poisonous... how can a pet at home be poisonous... what about kids ?
icon_question.gif

PS : Not thinking of rearing a centipede any time soon...

*
Wats the different between snake and centipede?
Both are venomous, both are gross for certain ppl
If u have enuff research and respect i think u can keep any pets

QUOTE(defaultname365 @ Dec 24 2008, 02:15 PM)
In other words, centipedes as pets NOT for kids ?
*
If i have a son i wont let them keep exotics until they are above 12

for the moment, i tried katak ady, i have no other resources due to in campus and hard for me to reach outside world.
the next day the dead katak stinks whens i open the cover.
it doesnt finish the whole meal, so i throw the dead frog away.
its better try with smaller one so it can finish it and less odor. it seems like everytime i put the food there for it, its never enough. it never stop hunting, i dont know why.

To really be certain, you'll also need to compare the terminal legs (the 'tail'-like legs on the last segment of the body).

I'm thinking they're identical?

the legs behind seems like mine one are longer and at the tips of the legs are mild brown transparent color.
while the one rafiq shown one is not quit the same. is this what you are trying to tell rafiq? ^^

i am not sure if the one rafiq shown one is still sub-adult or its just simply different species. is it?

Its more like he have a pede that came in his house (aka /i/nvashun) rather than keeping a pede himself
Who will let their pede out of the tank, given the fact that they move damm fast?

The centipede u asked are other sp, i couldnt remember the name though
Nt sure where can we find it but if i recall its name i can do some research on it
Few pages back i posted my pede's pic anw, nw internet slow, lazy2 find back
1of my centipede are bought from aquarium shop where they sell as feeder
Bt it have been defang, so u will need2 kill the prey b4 feeding it to the pede
Most of them from aquarium shop are dehydrated so make sure u give them a water dish/spray the tank else they will die in no time

Transfer, i usually scoop them up with spoon, but those fast and defensive like Scolopendra sp i wont do tat
Usually i put a vail into the enclosure and use a long tweezer to pok it into the vail then cover it while i do the rehouse
Anw if u dun mind i have a Cormocephalus sp which i plan2 release it cause it refuse to eat
Im sure its nt because of pre molt because it had juz molted
If u wanna try "reviving" it i can pass it to u

Nt really hard2 keep, they are quite hardy
House them in damp coco fiber and feed crix or mealworm
But mine are refusing food for more than a months, im nt sure why
Afraid of it die of hunger i decided2 release it but since ur looking for a centipede i think it deserve a chance
Who know u can "revive" it?
Im from Wangsa Maju anw

Spank my arse and call that a cherry red. It's not a cherry red vassili. That species belongs to the same genus as cherry reds - Scolopendra. The one in your picture is probably a Scolopendra hardwickei. They hail from southeast India and are filled with attitude. Imagine a trigger happy sheriff. Grows to about the size of a cherry red.

I juz wrap it in a damp towel right nw and if morning still no improvement i ll give up
So wat shld i do with the pede if no improvement?
Should i, feed it to my scorp? Feed it to my other pedes? Dissect it and post some pic? Preserve it?
*
Ok first, how much you got it for?

By saying "pet this pede" i hope u doesnt mean gently stroking on it though tongue.gif
A general rule for the minimum cage size for an adult pet-scolopendrid are:
Lenght => 2 x the bodylenght of the scolopendrid.
Width => 1 x the bodylenght of the scolopendrid.
Height => 1 x the bodylenght of the scolopendrid + substrate height.
(to prevent them to reach the top of the enclosure)

Read 1st page, got lots of info
