In the first place, Have u buy the license or not. The license key is actually the Micro SD card comes wth Garmin MXT & probably Garmin's Malaysia maps...that Sharkteef mentioned earlier. .

The symptom u describe is very common for those trying to install without license.

No discussion on #ahem..here..

Garmin MXT is using either Symbiam or Window mobile platforms If yours is Symbian, should not worry.

To view the maps there, u need to install mapsource. u can get it by googling for "Garmin mapsource"

The download link is here:
http://www.malsingmaps.com/portal/downloads.php

However free version is abit outdated i.e Jan 2008. The locked version are for those who contribute (Not monetary but via contribution of tracklogs, point of interest & errors.

B4 installing to your GPS receiver (Either Garmin, Nokia Symbian or even PDA Window mobile) pls read the wiki 1st on what is GPS, what softwares, how to install & how to contribute. It's rather long to post here..

wow..nice to see that  smile.gif

Yes it it's possible, Garmin will treat both valid & overlapping each others. If both files are from diff regions no problem, but once overlapped, lotsa funny thingy will happen..one of it that I hate....I can't do address search!!

QUOTE(cucubud @ Feb 17 2009, 08:10 AM)
I noticed some posts were disappeared from this thread.

Someone mentioned that we can have two maps in the Garmin folder. Malsingmap and Malfreemap.
Malsingmap - Gmapsupp.img
Malfreemap - Gmapsup2.img

When these two maps put in the Garmin folder, how does Garmin know which map to use?
Is there a setting where we can select which map to use?

Can't be 13 bars...Max in Garmin MXT/que only 12 biggrin.gif ....Well the bars represent the signal strenght of each satelite. If only 4 bars & the bars in in blue, meaning it's fixed & the data is processed by the unit. If other colours or blank/greyish, the unit still acquiring signals from satelites..If u have an ext antenna, u will see all those weak bars suddenly increase to almost max except if u are surrounded by highrises in KL

Yours detected & acquiring thus diff colours..& blank..no fix yet..once fixed normally blue filling ...u can also see certain satelite signal pretty weak...So if u wanted better signal, u need an external antenna. However for general navi, ext ant no need. but for mapping/tracklogs & etc probably need.

Currently there are only about 24 (or probably more now) NASA GPS satelites in space. the max u can acquire only 12 bcos another 12 blocked by the other 1/2 of the globe. So far 10 iare the avg best to acquire all 12 is possible but only once in a while..Signal strength will be another thing..

QUOTE(aspire2oo6 @ Feb 18 2009, 08:52 AM)
so from the picture above my phone have detect 10 satelitte?

Yes each bar represent 1 satellite. How strong is the signal from that satellite is represented by how high is the bar. If that satelite having low bar meaning it's far away on the horizon instead of overhead & also due to blockage by trees, car roof and buildings.

If based on my experience, u will get fixed if there is 3 or 4 stable satelites. If less than 3 normally 2D quality & >3 =3D quality. Dun think the North/South/East/West affecting the fix. Only the nukmber of satellites.

QUOTE(aspire2oo6 @ Feb 18 2009, 11:00 AM)
hmmm. so every bar means 1 satelitte?

So it also effect the location of the satelitte from my understanding it needs to get a lock for north, south, west and east before it can pinpoint your location. is that right?

Added on February 18, 2009, 4:48 pmWell the default in my Garmin MXT & also Mapsource is format/method 2 not 3. But default as per Google earth is method 3.

For me no diff because if u use method 3 as per google earth & key in mapsource, u still can get to that location. However (Yeah my mistake earlier) in Garmin MXT, u can't key in method 3 if your default is 2. bcos it's gave wrong info. to convert from google earth to Garmin MXT, just X60min

However in Google earth, if u use method 2 & copy & search using the Fly me to funjction, it will auto convert to method 3 i.e their default format.

QUOTE(idoblu @ Feb 18 2009, 12:43 PM)
wikimaps seems to use this method. one time my garmin was set to hddd°mm.mmm'
so since im a newbie i just entered the wikimap numbers into my garmin. i ended up at the wrong place....lol
im just worried if i gave a set of coordinates to someone.....and if he is a newbie, he might end up somewhere else too.....hence my question

I mean 3 stable wth confirmed blue filling will get u 3D fixed but for sure u will not be at 6M range-lah..probably 20-30M..once u get more satelites wth helps of ext antenna, u will be getting atleast 3-6M accuracy if u playback you tracklogs. U wil get fixed if 3 blue filling satelite acquired & not detected! Sometime there might be 5-7 satelites roaming but u can't get fixed bcos signal is too weak biggrin.gif Even wth 7 weak signals, sometime it took as good as 15min to get 3 stable satelite fix!! sad.gif ..In airplane, sometime can be as long as 20min!! to get a fix!

QUOTE(aspire2oo6 @ Feb 18 2009, 11:44 PM)
nah i dont think 2 or 3 means stable.

If detect 3 or 4 it takes like 10mins to lock

If 7 or more satelitte bar appear it locks in less than 5 mins or sometimes in sec from my experience

If u are using Nokia Symbian, those phones are without the ext antenna socket. So the best is to buy the re-radiating external antenna combo (i.e 1 set of external antenna & another re-radiating unit.) I bought mine from pc-mobile here:

http://www.pc-mobile.net/gpsant.htm

Suprisingly their price reduced so much..I bought mine 2.5yrs ago for ~RM200!...Time to buy 1...kaput oledi sad.gif ....BTW, for normal navigation, & acceptable satelite reception, no need antenna unless u wanted to contribute tracklogs or your car having Vkool installed hmm.gif

QUOTE(aspire2oo6 @ Feb 19 2009, 01:07 AM)
oh ok thanks for sharing finally what external gps do u recommend? So can i use external gps to lock then use back internal?

QUOTE(aspire2oo6 @ Mar 3 2009, 08:15 AM)
