yalor, no choice. My luggage's weight now already 35 kg sad.gif Overweight already, but dunno how to cut, everything also seems important to me but 1 kg + 1 kg... end up is quite alot.

edit: also, can I go and submit the visa application earlier than the appointment date? for example, i made the appointment on the 17th but decided to go on 16th. can or not?
*

now I facing new problem, my father ask me to help him buy share when I reach there, any1 know how to buy find brokers which can be trust in UK? sweat.gif (sorry to ask question which is unrelated to the thread sad.gif )

erm...I not sure whether you need to cancel the appointment slot or not, I think you better call the VFS to confirm. My case is the appointment slot is fully booked, so I have to walk-in to apply. (never book for appointment slot online)

p/s: hope you see this message in time sad.gif Sorry for not answering clearly sad.gif

Perhaps you can have a quick list of stuff you are bringing and we can see if there's anything you can remove?  I would avoid having too much cloth because you can buy them here and they're cheap when it's sale season.
Hi, Geminist, I think I will reorganize everything again tmr and will come back to you if still overweight. (my travel agent nvr help me apply for additional weight allowance, hence now I can onli check in 22kg baggage instead of 30 kg shakehead.gif)

QUOTE(Geminist @ Sep 16 2008, 07:41 PM)
About a trading account, you can consider HSBC Invest Direct.  They don't have any annual fees which makes life a lot easier as you are only charged per trade (£10 IIRC).  You'll have a discount as well if you go over a certain number of trades.  This account is ideal for buy to hold.

There are accounts that charge you a lower fee for each trade but you'll need to pay for an account maintenance fee each year.  You'll need to do the math and see which one is better.

Thanks for your advise. I will speak to my bank once I reach there smile.gif

I agree with you, previously because I not familiar with their rules so need to go for so many times. Fortunately, the staff at counter 3 and room 8 are kind enough to assist me smile.gif

lol..yeah thankx biggrin.gif yup it went well juz wondering how long it'll take. (im cutting it very close here bout 2 weeks before departure date  blink.gif )

yup they were friendly that's the good thing. juz tat i didnt noe need to pay using bank draft so in the end had to go out get the bank draft come back in and queue up again  rclxub.gif  went did u apply ur visa??? got it dy? how long did it took?

btw got question bout buying handphones using a contract.

lets say....i buy a phone under contract (lets say its phone A) and then i want to see phone B and want to go for it. can i juz return phone A and go for phone B or do i have to go and wait for the contract to end? anyway ways that i can change from phone A to phone B?

another scenario i wan to ask is, lets say a phone is slated to come out soon. so i buy a contract (example: GBP35 for 12 months) without the phone and then the phone comes out and its free with a contract of GBP35 for 18 months. can i juz upgrade?

edit: anyone ever used carphone warehouse? or mobile.co.uk? are they good?
*
Hi, I think the visa process time depends on the period you apply, when lesser ppl apply, u will get to know ur result faster.
I applied in the early September, it took me 5 working days. I think you can try to call the VFS for more accurate answer.

yup, I got my student visa already smile.gif

QUOTE(liew_jls @ Sep 17 2008, 05:30 PM)
remember you will have another 5kg extra, so you able to check in with 27kg.. if you like more allowance, you try joke with the officer and smile more to make he/her happy.. lol...
*
How come got 5 kg extra de? erm..my agent call me again, now can carry 30kg in my check in baggage =) (I think I dun take the risk, if they mood of the officer not good, then I will be fine for RM 230 per KG sweat.gif )

p/s:
I have some new question smile.gif
Q1) for the check in baggage, is there any restriction that I cannot carry certain size of bag which is too big? or they will just weight it and see whether my baggage is overweight of not?

Q2) the time writen in my air ticket, izit the local malaysia time?
Eg: Fly from KLIA at 0200 , reach Dubai at 0459 (malaysia time or dubai's time? ), transit at 0759 reach Glasgow at 1225 (malaysia's time or Glasgow's time?)

I keeps telling people to book here. They automatically give you 30 kg on all flights for student. The only condition is you buy an international student card from them for RM20.
*
QUOTE(Arturia @ Sep 17 2008, 10:37 PM)
lol...u can carry 30kg. but u have to give ur agent (or something like that im nt sure myself) ur proof that ur going there to study. example such as ur unconditional offer letter and the passport that shows ur student visa.

for check in luggage there is a restriction. u can read here:

http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=...9807&sec=nation
now the visa will take 8-10 working days to process if the application is straighforward (no need interview) if need interview is 20days. check here for more info:

thanks for the advise, my agent just inform me this afternoon, I can carry 30 KG once again smile.gif. (Can bring more ikan bilis sweat.gif )

QUOTE(jinXxxx @ Sep 17 2008, 09:53 PM)
Check-in baggages are all based on the weight. No specific size restrictions, unless they are seriously oversized - oversized bags are basically bags that you personally cannot carry alone (super huge ones). In my past experience, if you're flying and you have overweight luggage (or you are unsure) just go super early. If you're 3-5kgs over, the check-in officer will turn a blind eye and let you past. Women check-in officers are particularly strict on the weight issue but you might get lucky. Also if you are indeed overweight, prepare an extra bag to take out some less important items. Decide which of these are less important when packing so that you are able to remove them quickly at the check-in counter. You can then choose to carry on those items as hand carry or perhaps just forgo it altogether. Don't be afraid to chat up the check-in lady to let you through cause you might be a lucky boy.

The times written in your air ticket are in fact the local times of your destinations. For your case: you leave KUL at 0200 and arrive at DXB at 0459 (early morning - just in time to see the sunrise in Dubai). Your transit time is 3 hours and you fly from DXB at 0759 and land at GLA at 1225 (around about time to grab lunch and head off to see good ol' Scotland).

Also, as you're flying on Emirates, do remember that you have an option to use their Online Check-In facility. It saves you all the time queueing up at the check-in counter. Just go to the Emirates website 24hrs before you flight and enter your ticket number. You will need to print out a Confirmation Ticket to be presented with your Flight Ticket. All you do now is go to the Online Check-In counter to show them the two tickets, check the luggage in and be on your way. 15 mins from queueing up to sipping a coffee at the cafe.
*
hehe, thanks for the replies. You have clear all my doubt smile.gifI will try the Online Check-In facility ^^

Hi all,

I reach Glasgow already. abit disappointed because I just manage to catch 2 photo throughout my trip because I use the EVEREADY battery which is not powerful enough for my digital camera.

I attended few lecture class but have still problem understanding their english. In addition, I feel that I am very weak compare with others of my classmates. Hope I can catch up with them sweat.gif

but sometimes I feel sad when my mum cry in front of me when chatting with her using Skype. But I was abit shock that the voice come out from the Skype is still very clear even thou it transmit for a far distances.

I tried to buy a mobile phone here. but can't seems to find any store which is selling. Will it be cheaper if I order from the nokia website? (plus 4 pound delivery fees blink.gif )

take your time, you will get use to their accent sooner or later.

just dont give up and put more effort, if you think you are weaker.

tell your mum of happy story instead. take more pictures and show to them. that will help her from despair of missing you.

cheap prepay mobile phone? you can get from argos, or look for those carphonewarehouse, o2, vodafone, t-mobile, orange etc etc shop and ask for a cheap prepay phone, they are more than happy to show you one and tell you their good prepay deal.
the argos is so near to my place but I nvr notice sweat.gif (will pay there a visit when I free smile.gif )

I think I need to go and attend the English class provided for International Students =X

Q2) Can I apply for the HSBC Online Bonus Saver account when I am a passport account holder? Or I need to wait until my contract end a year later first?

Q2 i am not sure since i am dont have HSBC acc

yup, I currently in Glasgow. Oh, No wonder T Mobile's nokia phone is cheaper than the phone sell by Nokia smile.gif (40 pound gap shakehead.gif )

There is a monthly charge for Passport account. But if your parent are M'sia HSBC Premier account holder, you can open a UK Premier for free. Subjected to condition. Otherwise is GBP25 per month.

Furthermore, the UK Premier can be opened BEFORE you landed in UK.
*
oh dear! I already in UK + had a HSBC passport account, maybe I ask my sister to use the HSBC Premier account next time. smile.gif

btw, is Thermal Top and Long Johns enough to stay me warm? coz I never on heater to save $ sweat.gif, (feeling very cold now ).

there are so many option for pay as go package, no idea which 1 to choose, any disadvantages of using Orange Dolphin package? (free 300 SMS when top up 10 pound)

another thing, becareful with the notes you receive, dunno which shop give me old 5 pound notes, now it is unusable, need to take a trip to the bank to exchange sad.gif

My University is very huge, but their integration between department sux, for example my course is Business + IT + management, but the issue is all of them have their own intranet (each department have 2). So total I need to remember 6 different URL with 6 different username and password sweat.gif plus take photo and fill in my personal details for 3 times rolleyes.gif

Today so happens that they print the wrong time table for us, so whole of my class went for the lectures at the wrong time sleep.gif!! (the lecturer was shock how come there are X2 more student in his class sweat.gif )

lol... umbrella.. yes, you can use umbrella but like they told the wind is very strong so you don't need to get expensive umbrella..  smile.gif you can go to poundland which cost you £1 per umbrella or cheap umbrella, so when ever the wind is too strong and your umbrella is koyak you can throw it away.. there's one time, i just bought my umbrella from poundland and only used for twice the next day it was in dustbin... lol...

yes, winter sales is around end of dec (after christmas).... if you want to get cheap stuff, you can wait till last week of jan or 1st week of feb. that's time they clearing their stock.
*
QUOTE(youngkies @ Oct 2 2008, 02:23 AM)
1. get a good expensive one from mark&spencers or sort off. those lightweight made of good material (aluminium if iianm), folding umbrella. because of the strong wind, umbrella is not favourable, so get one with good flexibility, one that can easily flip back after being overturned.  or you can invest in those cheapo GBP1-2, where it breaks easily and you'll have to change them frequently.

2. yes. it is not massive, but you'll have to hunt around.
*
QUOTE(youngkies @ Oct 2 2008, 02:25 AM)
that is why investing in an expensive umbrella (gbp10-20) is well valued.

and the massive sales day would be the boxing day, 26th of december. before that, there will be on-off sales in most shops.
*
QUOTE(liew_jls @ Oct 2 2008, 02:39 AM)
lol.. nope, i bought a £10++ from boots, but it's still went into dustbin after 1 or 2 weeks.. hahah...

yes, true 26th dec is the massive sales day.. but in Jan most of shop will have further discount...
*
hehe, thanks for all the replies smile.gif I will go to the shop and look at the umbrella smile.gif

QUOTE(melt @ Oct 2 2008, 03:55 AM)
Yes but most of the stock (sizes) will be gone by that time. You can imagine during boxing day (26th Dec) some ppl wake up in the early morning just to queue in front of the store.
If you are looking for a bargain go for a shop call Primark. You can get cheap clothes in there. One advise though, do not use hot water to wash the cloths as the cloths will shrink.
*
QUOTE(youngkies @ Oct 2 2008, 03:35 PM)
really. too bad. cause mine stand the strong wind quite well. M&S makes good lightweight reliable umbrella.
you can get good one on typical sales day.

i prefer to hunt for bargain clothing from better brand, primark quality is a big no-no for me. cutting wise - bad, choices for man - limited. though they are cheap, but not for long term usage.
*
QUOTE(liew_jls @ Oct 2 2008, 04:39 PM)
yeah, primark is target commercial level. so quality will be low... but if you just want to wear for short term, then it's a good option...

probably TK-Max is another good shop if you like to get cheap branded cloth...
*
QUOTE(youngkies @ Oct 2 2008, 05:10 PM)
primark targets at young teenager, woman and students.

because esp. woman, they like to mix and match according to season without burning a hole in the pocket, low budget suitable for those students and young teens.

so if you are capable to spend some time to hunt for bargain, you usually can get something of same price as primark, but at better quality and cutting from a better branded shop. get a gf, she sure will be happy to be a bargain hunter at your expense.

Added on October 2, 2008, 5:13 pmused to like tk-max. but realised those out-of-season/rejected designer brands doesnt really worth it either. in addition they have limited choices. for the same price, you can have more options from the mid-level consumer brand.

my 2 cents.
*
oo... then I will take the time to look through primark and the shop which sell branded stuff (but outdated) and try to get onli the 1 I need. erm... I think it's not easy to get a gf here, coz in my class onli got 2 Chinese girl. (Brunei & Thailand). and the Malaysian I saw in my student hall mostly Malays (all use petrolnas scholarships to come)

p/s: Sorry, another question, when the credit of orange pay as you go going to expired? some say 6 months without receiving and making calls or SMS, but I can't find the written statement from the long terms and conditions provided.

bath towel you mean?

2 quid towel from M&S? is that a small face towel. M&S is actually an expensive place to shop in.

you can get huge bath towel for cheap from tesco, the so called tesco value range or even asda, ikea, shaws the draper, primark etc. of course they are definitely more than 2 quid for a huge towel. and a decent to good one cost from 20 quid and above.

even a good decent bath mid priced towel in msia cost abt rm30-60.

get a good one, those abt 15 pounds at least, they are really comfy and can last you for some years.

for price reference, you can always refer to argos.co.uk their pricing are pretty standard with decent quality for uk, unlike some shops that sells for really cheap but with poor quality.

I tried to get a form from the branch, but their slot not enough for me to fill in my permanent address (only enough for my term address)

then, I tried to call 0857 404 404 but was ask to enter my 16 digit credit card number, I look at my card, there is 18 digit sweat.gif (the call cost me 50p cry.gif )

is there anything else I can do? cry.gif

and interestingly, there hardly any long addresses in the UK, unlike in malaysia. what does ur address look like? maybe we can help "shortening" it biggrin.gif.

erm...

Block D Flat 1 Room 3 <--(example only smile.gif )
Andrew Ure Hall
1-4 Parsonage Row

if using online banking, I won't be able to enter "Block D Flat 1 Room 3", not even "D1-3" coz it is not recognize by the post office system blink.gif .
(the system will auto generate the address for Andrew Ure Hall for me after I enter the post Code and House name)

there are alot of blocks and flat in my student hall. Can I assume that they will deliver safely to my place coz not much people with my name around here? smile.gif
(all with those weird weird name @.@)

p/s: they use pigeon hole, 1 Block got 12 Flat, and there is 4~5 blocks

if it's sorted by name, then u dont need flat number. just put:

1-4 Parsonage Row,

some times, u dont even need to put in ur road name (high street) coz the post code is unique to the road. in malaysia, postcodes are only unique to an area.
