This 'locked' state is not the same as sim lock. Only after you activate that you can go to springboard. Why we need to activate? So that the phone will check whether we are using an authorize sim with the phone or not. If we are not using an authorize sim (lock phones), then we can get to the springboard and cant use the phone. We can only get to the emergency call part only. OTB (Out of The Box) unlock iPhone still need to be activated so it can check the sim card if its valid. You might ask "Why it still need to check the sim if its already unlock and can accept any sim?". Well this is just a process that all iphone need to go thru, locked or unlocked. This goes the same with locked phones. We need to jailbreak the phone first so that we can access the filesystem. Then we 'hacktivate' or activate the phone by tricking it with a spoof activation. This bypass the itunes checking and let us gain access to the springboard. Only after that we can unlock the phone (if a software unlock is available). So to a locked phone, the most important process to do is jailbreaking. With it we can do the activating and unlocking. Unlock phone need to: 1. Activate thru iTunes only 2. Jailbreaking is optional if user want to use 3rd party apps 3. No need to unlock Unlock phone can update/upgrade to any firmware without worry because it will remain unlock whereas locked phones have to wait for it to be able to jailbreak and if there is a baseband update, an unlock sollution must be present. Locked phone need to: 1. Jailbreak so we can gain access to the phone (mandatory) 2. Activate the phone thru 'hacktivation' or activation spoof (also mandatory) 3. Unlock the phone with a software unlocking sollution to use with other sim (also mandatory) Baseband* The baseband is a subsystem on the phone that handles phone line communication. Modifying this subsystem is how unlocks are achieved. These are updated in iTunes with new firmware versions. iTunes will not downgrade your baseband. Currently, an iTunes restore will not modify your baseband unless your baseband is erased or downgraded prior to the restore. Firmware: The firmware is the operating system installed on your phone. The firmware versions include 1.0.2, 1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.1.3, 1.1.4, 2.0.0, 2.0.1, 2.0.2 and 2.1. All jailbreaking only affects the firmware, not the bootloader or baseband. This is why restoring will undo a jailbreak but will not affect an unlock. Restore / Upgrade: iTunes provides two options to change the firmware on your phone. Restore and upgrade. Restore is a full erase and reprogramming of your device. This will result in a factory fresh device. All songs and contacts are wiped out. Upgrade will only wipe out the smaller disk partition leaving all your songs and settings intact. Upgrade is only useful if you are trying to go from one version to the next version of firmware. It will not solve any problems on your phone unless they are naturally solved by the new firmware. I generally recommend using restore in all cases. DFU Mode vs Restore mode: DFU (device firmware upgrade) mode is a special mode that bypasses the operating system and lets you upgrade the device. When in DFU mode, the phone will have no display on the screen. Restore mode is more common. In this mode you can also restore or upgrade your device, but it is not as drastic as DFU mode. Many restore problems can be solved by using DFU mode. *************************************************** Please Read Before you Proceed!!!!! While it’s possible to go from Pwned 2.1 -> Pwned 2.2 (using PwnageTool), you can’t yet go from stock to pwned(iTunes detect iPhone as iPod, prompt error 2000). Now here's a "fix" for all afflicted: Use of a passive (or active) USB hub seems to remedy. The hub used shown below: Baseband 101 The ‘baseband’ is the generic name given to the internal components of the iPhone that handle the phone calls and Internet access. This ‘baseband’ is a tiny and unique independent computer system that runs inside your iPhone, it is separate to the main system that handles the applications (such as email and google maps) and it talks to the main part of the phone over an internal communications network. Think of it like a cable modem or other peripheral that is attached to your home PC that needs occasional updates. When a software update is released and presented to you within iTunes the baseband is sometimes updated (to fix bugs or add new features). The 2.2 update for the iPhone 3G contains such an update, so running the vanilla updater straight away with iTunes will reprogram and update the baseband. This could be bad for certain people, depending on your ultimate aim. SIM Free/SP Unlocked/Factory Unlocked iPhone 3G This applies if you bought your iPhone 3G for $$$$$$$. This model of iPhone 3G doesn’t have an Service Provider lock (aka factory unlocked) and you are able to put any SIM card into the phone and get service. Your phone is already unlocked so you do not need to worry about baseband updates, simply upgrade to 2.2 using iTunes and then use QuickPwn to Pwn and Jailbreak. This will add Cydia and Installer too. Locked iPhone 3G - Preserve Baseband This applies if you have a locked iPhone 3G and you wish to update to 2.2 but preserve the iPhone’s current baseband software. Preserving the baseband will give you the maximum chance for any upcoming software unlock. Upgrading using iTunes can forever eliminate your chances of ever unlocking you iPhone 3G. To upgrade your phone to 2.2 and preserve the state of the baseband you need to create a custom .ipsw with PwnageTool. This custom .ipsw will not contain the baseband update but of course will still allow all the cool new stuff from 2.2. There are plenty of tutorials about this process on the web, but PwnageTool contains intuitive graphics and easy to follow prompts that should have you up and running in no time at all. Please note: PwnageTool is only available for Mac OS X.** If you're using Turbosim etc and would like to upgrade your firmware to 2.2, Pwnagetool will be the only software used to upgrade your firmware. Upgrading via iTunes or using Quickpwn will render your turbosim unusable/useless thus eliminating your chances of ever unlocking your iPhone 3G with software unlock in the future. Read below. *************************************************** Added 14/12/08 iPhone Dev-Team Expects 3G Unlock Before New Year The iPhone Dev-Team is working hard on the iPhone 3G unlock and expects to have it released a couple days after Christmas. According to team member MuscleNerd the "Target date is a few days after Christmas". At first the unlock will be released for the 3G iPhone's with the 01.45.00 baseband. If time permits the Dev-Team will try to complete an unlock for the 02.11.07 baseband as well. Right now for 02.11.07 we have some untested ideas. Ideally we'd have something solid by the end of next week, but if we don't then it would be a staged release, with 01.45.00 first out of the gate. Here is a list of the iPhone firmware versions and their matching basebands. - 2.0.0 Firmware & 01.45.00 Baseband - 2.0.1 Firmware & 01.48.02 Baseband - 2.0.2 Firmware & 02.08.01 Baseband - 2.1.0 Firmware & 02.11.07 Baseband - 2.2.0 Firmware & 02.28.00 Baseband Those of you lucky enough to still be on 2.0.0 or the 01.45.00 baseband will be able to unlock first. If you are at 2.1 or used PwnageTool to update to 2.2 then you will have the 2.11.07 baseband. This will be the second baseband to receive an unlock. Those on the 02.28.00 baseband will likely have to wait a while before an unlock is released. So make sure you use a tutorial on iClarified site to jailbreak and update rather then using iTunes directly. Added 16/12/08: 3G Unlock We have been working hard on a few other things. The main one being the 3G unlock codenamed “yellowsn0w”. This is now completed and is currently being packaged into a user-friendly application with the simplicity that you see in QuickPwn or BootNeuter. • The target release date for the unlock is New Year’s Eve 2008. • This unlock method is available to iPhone 3Gs that have 2.11.07 baseband or earlier, we did warn you. • You can tell what version baseband you have by going to Settings->General->About->Modem Firmware • The unlock requires a jailbroken 3G iPhone. It’ll be installable via Cydia and so it doesn’t matter if you have a Mac or PC. • Please refrain from updating your baseband, regardless of what version you’re at. We’ll have complete directions on New Year’s Eve. • We’ll stream a live demo of the unlock before Christmas (see the update at the end of this post) DFU Problems Lots of users have been experiencing problems with the use of DFU mode after applying yesterday’s 10.5.6 system update. We believe this behavior is due to a kernel bug not a specific countermeasure by Apple. Possible fixes are (try at your own risk!) - 1. Replace the following plugin kexts from within IOUSBFamily.kext with the ones from 10.5.5 and then rebuild kextcache (if you don’t understand this, then you shouldn’t attempt it!) /System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBHub.kext /System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/IOUSBCompositeDriver.kext 2. Use a USB hub in-between the DFU device and the Mac and insert/reinsert the iPhone’s USB cable. 3. Use a PwnageTool created .ipsw on Windows! Oh the irony!
